Mike Lewis [AA/FC] and Rick Williamson [AA/FD] topped first day qualifying at the California Hot Rod Reunion at AAA Famosa Raceway in Bakersfield, Ca. The nitro divisions have one more session on Saturday afternoon before the first round of eliminations begin later in the day.
Lewis, driving Henry Gutierrez’s Brand-X tribute car, thundered to a 5.820, 243.16 in a 1971 Mustang tuned by Paul Smith.
“I’m totally blown away,” said Lewis. “We made a couple of runs under similar conditions and made the same exact run. I would have never guessed a .92 would stay low. We are blown away and happy to be in this position headed into Saturday with one session left.”
Lewis edged Jeff Arend, who is driving Dale Pulde’s War Eagle Pontiac Firebird. Arend ran a 5.826, 236.84.
Tim Boychuk sits on the bubble with a 6.013.
Williamson, who is trailing Nostalgia Top Fuel point leader Adam Sorokin by less than three rounds, jumped to the top of the dragster field with a 5.750, 261.02. Rick White was second with a 5.783. Sorokin was 13th.
The Nostalgia Pro Modified division was led by Terry Housley from London, Texas.
Housley, who is a two-time IHRA Pro Modified series champion, ran a 6.167 elapsed time at 233.80 mph to edge Scott Bailey’s 6.226. Marc Meadors sits on the bubble with an off-pace 8.836.
Other provisional low qualifiers include Kin Bates Sr. [A/Fuel Dragster], Bud Hammer [Jr. Fuel], Ron Huegli [Pro 7.0], Jimmy White [A/Gas], Don Toros [Nostalgia Eliminator-1], Ernie “The Attorney” Algorri [A/FX].
