Charlie Allen, president of Firebird International Raceway, confirmed to Competition Plus on Thursday the owners of the track the Gila River Indian Community have not renewed the track's lease.
According to Allen, Firebird International Raceway had a 30-year lease that expires April 6, 2013.
"We had a thirty year lease and that is up April 6th, 2013. We are going to run a full schedule of events from now until then."
Allen said there will be more information to follow about the future of Firebird International Raceway.
The Arizona Nationals will take place Feb. 22-24 at Firebird International Raceway.
NHRA President Tom Compton issued a statement regarding the future of the sanctioning body and Firebird Raceway.
“NHRA is currently working with the Gila River Indian Community to continue to deliver the excitement of NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing to our passionate fans in Phoenix and the state of Arizona beyond 2013,” Compton said. “Based on our discussions with the Gila River Indian Community, we are very optimistic that the venue will be on the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule in 2014.”
“We have had a very successful partnership with Charlie Allen and his team during their 28 years as lease holders of the facility and look forward with much anticipation for the 29th annual NHRA Arizona Nationals, February 22-24, 2013.”
