THE STRIP AT LVMS TAKES NHRA SUMMIT SERIES TEAM TITLE
The team from The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway took home the Team Championship title and the trophy on Saturday for the NHRA Summit Racing Series Pacific Division Finals at Auto Club Famoso Raceway while four racers also captured individual Division Championships.
The Strip accumulated 55 points to hold off host track Auto Club Famoso Raceway who landed in second with 51 points and Sonoma Raceway in third at 48. Each track in the division is allowed to send up to 3 teams of racers to compete in both team and individual competition.
Leading the charge for Las Vegas was Doug Schumann out of Hesperia, Calif. in the Motorcycle class on his ’98 Suzuki. Schumann took on Doug Love, Novato, Calif., running for Sonoma in the final. Schumann clocked in at 8.660 seconds at 148.18 mph to defeat Love and his ’01 Triumph.
Barona Dragway had a pair of winners in Zack Meziere and CW Hoefer. Meziere won in Super Pro with a lap of 7.742, 161.63 in his ’11 dragster. The Escondido, Calif., racer beat Marc Power, Santa Rose, Calif., who was running for Sonoma in his ’68 El Camino clocking in at 10.267, 127.47. Hoefer, Calimesa, Calif., took his ’91 Firebird to the winner’s circle, knocking out Johnny Burke from the Firebird Int’l Raceway team in Pro, running 12.308, 109.87. Burke, Mesa, Ariz., left early with a red-light foul start.
Representing Sacramento Raceway was Mike Spellman taking the win in Sportsman with his ’72 Challenger over Dwayne Opperman, Napa, Calif. The Elk Grove, Calif., racer went 12.651 seconds on a 12.65 dial at 102.56 mph for the win over the quicker Opperman at 12.071 in his ’67 Camaro.
The four winners will advance to Sunday’s Summit Super Showdown competition which pits the top point’s earners from each track in head to head competition. Sunday’s Summit Super Showdown winners will advance to the Summit Racing Series National championship at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona where they will face off with the winners from NHRA’s other six divisions for a purse of more than $100,000.
