A 1275 HP STREET ENGINE? ON PUMP GAS?

727When drivers pull up to a stoplight many have visions of being in a drag race with a powerful engine under the hood.

For that person, renowned engine builder Sonny Leonard has just the engine. Leonard in 2012 is selling a Sonny’s 727-cubic inch, 1275 horsepower hemispherical headed pump gas engine. Sonny’s Racing Engines shop is based in Lynchburg, Va. The web site is sonnysracingengines.com.

“Some of the high end folks want to get the most power they can get naturally aspirated and being street legal too,” Leonard said. “This has 1275 horsepower and you can drive that to the grocery store or whatever. Then you could take it to the track and race it if you wanted to with unleaded fuel. At the race track, all you have to do is change the rear tires and go racing. Sonny’s designed this hemispherical cylinder head for 800 cubic engine Pro Stock, which makes the ideal choice for this application.”

Leonard said he has never raced the engine which runs on 91 Octane unleaded fuel.

“This engine would run like 7.60 seconds in a power glide car, something that weighed like 2,350 or 2,400 pounds, and you could drive it to the track,” Leonard said. “You could run that time (with this engine) at a dragstrip on a quarter-mile. At a stoplight (on the street) this engine would give you all you could handle.”

If someone is interested in purchasing this 1,275 horsepower street-legal engine there are options.

“We actually will build the engine and also we will sell it in kit form,” Leonard said. “So, if a guy might have his own engine builder that he wants to use, he can buy this in kit form and put it together himself. This engine has Rolls Royce parts inside. You got to have good pieces for it to have that much power and for it to live good.”

Leonard said the price of the engine is $59,400.

“We developed the engine over the winter time and the first one went to a guy over in Australia,” Leonard said. “What makes this engine unique is that is has one full barrel application. A guy from Sweden called me the other day about this engine for a boat application. It was a boat application that you had to run one four barrel. It didn’t say carburetor or fuel injection, it said one four barrel. This throttle body is spread out front to rear and it is a longer throttle body to give better fuel distribution to your four end cylinders. We made a computer model in-house for the manifold and this manifold is made out of plastic. So it runs extremely cool and if it is cooler and everything is more dense it will make more power. If someone bought this engine and it didn’t fit in their car, they could pay to have it (the engine) modified. The person who buys this engine can afford a good chassis builder to accommodate this unique engine.”
