FOLEY AND CASSEL SPLIT

In a sport where time is measured in thousandths of a second, making snap, and sometimes tough, decisions is the name of the game.

It was announced today that recently named crew chief, Rick Cassel, has split from the Foley & Lewis, Torco-sponsored Top Fuel team.

Doug Foley said, “We went through two weeks of testing in Las Vegas and Phoenix, and after this weekend’s race in Pomona, we all sat down and agreed that we weren’t happy with the direction we were going in. It was an amicable split and I’m sorry it didn’t work out, but nevertheless, it was one of those snap decisions we had to make.” In a sport where time is measured in thousandths of a second, making snap, and sometimes tough, decisions is the name of the game.

Doug Foley said, “We went through two weeks of testing in Las Vegas and Phoenix, and after this weekend’s race in Pomona, we all sat down and agreed that we weren’t happy with the direction we were going in. It was an amicable split and I’m sorry it didn’t work out, but nevertheless, it was one of those snap decisions we had to make.”

For the past two years, the Torco Mach Series Accelerator-sponsored Top Fuel dragster of Foley & Lewis has made a habit of producing complete passes, navigating the 8,000-horspower machine from one end of the track to the other under full power. This past weekend’s Carquest Auto Parts NHRA Winternationals eventually produced a qualified field of 16 cars separated by only one-tenth of a second, producing the fastest qualified field in the history of NHRA Top Fuel drag racing. With 21 of the very best Top Fuel cars in the country in attendance, qualifying alone was quite a feat.

“We weren’t able to string together the type of consistent runs this team has been known for,” Foley said. “Ending up on the outside of the qualified field is not our intention and we knew that we couldn’t allow it to get out of hand. With our next race being the Checker-Schuck’s-Kragen NHRA Nationals in Phoenix in two weeks, we had to come to an understanding of what the future held for the team.”

Effective immediately, the Foley & Lewis car will be tuned by co-crew chiefs Glenn Camp and Scott Morell, along with Charlie Zellman, Archie Singleton, and Joe Janish. All have been long-time crew members with the New Jersey-based Foley & Lewis team and have proven their ability to work together toward the goal of winning races.

Foley said, “We’ll continue to look for a new crew chief, but for right now, I have a lot of faith in my guys that they can overcome any shortcomings. Sometimes, we’re not always sure how to perform a certain job, but they always rise to the top and get it done. And that’s a quality that’s hard to find and I feel fortunate to have such a great group.

"We've always represented Evan Knoll and his Torco group in as professional a manner as one can expect," Foley said. “And we're going to work hard to get this team back on that track quickly."
