McMILLEN TO STAR IN VERSUS DOCUMENTARY

Written by Susan Wade.

Terry McMillen didn't win the Top Fuel trophy at the Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway last weekend, but it was one of the most successful days of his drag racing career.

As he wrapped up his weekend in the pits, receiving congratulations from fans for his semifinal finish -- and first round-wins since he upset reigning champion Larry Dixon in the first round at the season-opener at Pomona, Calif. -- McMillen also scored big off the racetrack.

He finalized a deal Sunday with producer Stephen Pullin, of "PINKS" and "PINKS ALL OUT" notoriety, to be the subject of a documentary to air sometime in December on Versus cable TV channel.

McMillen said the program will focus on "the life and times of Terry McMillen, I guess, looking at our future and bringing kids in ... how I started ... just a lifetime documentary."

Filming will begin at the NHRA SuperNationals at Englishtown, N.J., the first weekend in June and will continue at the June 17-19 Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol, Tenn. Pullin's filming crew also will visit McMillen's home and shop in Elkhart, Ind.

The Amalie Oil / University of Northwestern Ohio Dragster driver said Pullin and the network are considering turning the documentary into a series.

"Steve Pullen -- he's the one who got it all done. NHRA is working with them," McMillen said. "It's a pretty big deal for me. It'll be fun."

So Versus will have the answer for anyone who ever wondered how this imaginative little boy from the Southside of Chicago became drag racing's "Instigator." By Christmas, viewers should learn how McMillen, who amused himself as a child by running in circles in his backyard, ended up blasting straight down a narrow ribbon of asphalt in a wicked-looking, 8,000-horsepower, 300-mph-plus green dragster with a menacing alligator on its side.

Stay tuned.
