CHASSIS BUILDER WANTS CADDY PRO STOCKER

If you’re a GM Pro Stock racer and you want to build a new car, the design you’re going to get is either three years old, the Chevy Cobalt, or from a product line stang5no longer in existence, the Pontiac GXP.

If Dennis Burnevik has his druthers, he’ll have a new GM body for his clients in 2012, and it won’t be a Camaro either.

Burnevik, pending approval from the various legal entities, wants to return a Cadillac Pro Stocker to the game for the first time since the mid-1980s.

The veteran chassis builder, who assumed the bulk of Don Ness’ chassis building business when he retired, wants to bring out the first Cadillac CTS Coupe.

“It’s in the concept stages right now,” confirmed Burnevik. “If we have some interest in it, we’ll seek GM approval and hopefully have a new GM body coming forth. GM has been a little behind in their development. Hopefully we can turn it around for them.”

The factory version of the Cadillac CTS combines luxury and horsepower with its 6.2L, supercharged V-8.

Burnevik believes this spiffy model could be an excellent replacement for the Pontiac.

“I think so,” Burnevik said. “I’d like to see the Camaro come out. It should be approved and ready sometime soon. Who knows what’s going to happen with that?”

Pretty soon, Burnevik points out, the Pontiac body is going to be no longer approved by NHRA’s rules. The current GXP has two more years, through 2013, of use on the circuit.

“They’re running on borrowed time anyways,” said Burnevik. “GM needs to replace a body to keep their Pro Stock programs up to date. This is an idea myself and a few guys have been kicking around. I finally did a concept drawing. It’s a pretty nice car.”

Pontiac introduced their first GXP Pro Stockers in 2008 while the Chevrolet Cobalt has been around since 2005.

Right now Burnevik and his supporters are hoping the concept will come to fruition rapidly.

“I just literally finished this concept days ago,” said Burnevik. “There are a few guys kicking it around in Pro Stock. There are a couple of private financiers who want to do it.”

The general procedure begins with the concept presented to the manufacturer. With the blessing of the manufacturer, the concept is then presented to the NHRA where a body is created using the NHRA’s standard measurements.

Right now, the largest sticking point -- could be the current Camaro which has been approved for sportsman use only. The first Pro Stock Camaro body proposed for Pro Stock will pull out of the plug in the coming weeks.

“Depending on what the factory wants to do and their status with the Pro Stock guys – it’s hard to say because everyone wants to wait around and see what is going to happen with the Camaro.”

In the meantime, Burnevik has his eye on one of those spiffy Cadillacs.
