NMCA AND NMRA ADD 275 DRAG RADIAL CLASSES

ProMedia recently announced the addition of a 275 Drag Radial class to both its NMRA Keystone Automotive Ford Drag Racing Series and NMCA Flowmaster Drag Racing Series events. According to ProMedia President Charlie Harmon, the addition of the class to both series’ underscores the quick rise in popularity of this brand of heads-up drag racing. “Drag radial, specifically that which utilizes the 275 tire, has captured a lot of attention among racers, fans and manufacturers,” Harmon said. “We are constantly looking for ways to grow our program and adding 275 is certainly a big step.”

Supporting the debut of these two new classes are two long time sponsors of NMRA and NMCA drag racing. ATI Performance Products will be sponsoring those racing in the NMCA while AFCO will carry the Xtreme Drag Radial banner through 2013 for Ford Racing enthusiasts participating with NMRA.

AFCO Xtreme Drag Radial replaces NMRA’s Drag Radial class while ATI Performance Products 275 Drag Radial takes the place of the NMCA’s Street Radial class. “We were proud to be one of the first major series to include a drag radial-specific class to a national event series back in 2001. We listened to a few passionate racers and decided it was a nice fit for our program and it eventually grew from a part-time class into a full-time exciting category, helping to define NMRA drag racing. For NMCA, the Street Radial class evolved from Cheap Street, a high 9-second class into its current mid-eight second form. Recently however, our core group of racers expressed interest in going faster on the 275 drag radial, and I think we have reacted well to that need with this new class,” Harmon stated.

The rules for these 275 classes are a familiar theme to current and potential NMRA/NMCA racers. “Our races are conducted on ¼-mile tracks and that factored into some of the decision-making when trying to create parity between the combinations,” stated NMCA Technical Director, Jeff Conley. “It wasn’t an easy process and we know it may not fit every racer’s needs, but we feel we created a set of rules which addresses equality across all racing platforms,” concluded Conley.

“We’ve been in contact with dozens of racers who are interested, excited, and looking forward to competing in both series. There is definitely a buzz going on over these two categories this off-season,” said Ricky Best, ProMedia Communication Coordinator. Rules for each class are available online at: www.NMCAdigital.com and www.NMRAdigital.com in the class forums.

One unique feature of the 275 categories will be two combo races in 2011 to form a no-holds-barred showdown between NMCA and NMRA. The NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals held April 14-17 at Atlanta Dragway and the NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing June 23-26 at Route 66 Raceway will feature one combined class as NMRA and NMCA racers battle it out. An NMRA racer’s points accumulation will be credited to both NMRA and NMCA series. This will enable those racers who chose to follow both series the opportunity to accumulate points for NMCA and NMRA championships during the combo races.

“The combo races are going to be fun and exciting. It will allow these competitors to compete in a highly organized event for a good purse, excellent contingencies, and tremendous media exposure,” Harmon said. “In addition to those two races, ProMedia offers 12 other events where a 275 racer can enter – each offering the same efficient program, enormous media exposure, guaranteed payouts, and a large contingency program. It’s a win-win situation and we are excited for AFCO Xtreme Drag Radial and ATI Performance Products 275 Drag Radial in 2011 and beyond,” he concluded.
