Three drivers walked away from last weekend’s Fourth Annual World Footbrake Challenge with wallets much heavier than when they arrived in Thunder Valley.

Steve Alford of Angier, N.C. drove his 1971 Ford Pinto to victory in Friday’s first $10,000-to-win shootout event. Alford defeated Manny Sousa from Bradenton, Fla. in the final round. Alford had a .020 reaction time and a 7.022 elapsed time (7.02 dial-in) at 94.75 mph. Sousa’s losing effort combined a .017 reaction with a 5.803 E.T. (5.78 dial-in).

Jacob Rutledge from Houston, Ga. raced to the win in Saturday’s main event, collecting $10,000 in the process. Rutledge used a .005 R.T. in a final round that saw his competition, BJ Bianchi of Palmetto, Fla. turn on the red light for jumping the start. Rutledge’s winning pass was a 7.984 E.T. (7.97 dial-in) at 86.37 mph. Bianchi’s finished his run with a 6.890 E.T. (6.76 dial-in).

Chris Plott from Winston-Salem, N.C. drove his 1970 Mercury Cougar to the win over Jason Stern of Warrenton, Va. Plott’s .014 R.T., coupled with a 6.208 E.T. (6.19 dial-in) at 104.31 mph were good enough to earn $10,000. Stern had a .024 R.T. and a 6.967 E.T. (6.95 dial-in) on his runner-up pass.

Action in Thunder Valley continues with the Fas Mart Street Fights Series on Thursday, July 22. Thompson Metal Truck Night gives the biggest, baddest trucks in the area a chance to shine.

A truck “Tug of War” and ticket giveaways for the Thursday, July 29 Thompson Metal Monster Truck Challenge are just a few of the things planned for Thursday evening.

In the Tug of War, two trucks will be chained together by their bumpers. From there, it is like the old-fashioned game by the same name. The truck that pulls its opponent across a line will take home some cold, hard cash for its owner.

Also, fans will not want to miss the area’s fastest street-legal machines do battle at the end of the night in the Street Fights Outlaws, while the fastest bikes will face off as well.

Gates open at 5 p.m., with racing taking place at 6 p.m. Spectator admission is $5, while anyone can challenge the strip for just $10.
