FEEDBACK FRIDAY – THE UNLIKELY CONTENDERS: JEFF DOBBINS RUN FOR THE TITLE

FEEDBACK ARTICLE – THE UNLIKELY CONTENDERS: JEFF DOBBINS RUN FOR THE TITLE

These are the kind of stories I like to here. Jeff Dobbins is just like
Bob Glidden was thirty years ago. Gotta love the underdog! GO JEFF from
your biggest fan.

Let’s see some Mountain Motor Pro Stock racing on the west coast! - Richard Arbiso

FEEDBACK FRIDAY – LEE BEARD: REMEMBERING ONE OF THE BEST GUYS TO EVER ENTER THE SPORT

FEEDBACK ARTICLE – LEE BEARD: REMEMBERING ONE OF THE BEST GUYS TO EVER ENTER THE SPORT

I fondly remember waiting in-line to buy a hamburger in Sonoma, 3
people ahead of me was Gary Ormsby also waiting in-line to buy burgers
for his crew.

He was my hero then and still is to this day, a cool guy who never
sought celebrity just wanted to win races. He was inspirational to me
then and still is to this day.

His spirit lives on. - David O'Callaghan, Hertfordshire, England and now St. Paul, MN

FEEDBACK FRIDAY – ONE RACER ASKS: WHY WASN’T ATLANTA SHUTDOWN UPDATED?

FEEDBACK ARTICLE – ONE RACER ASKS: WHY WASN’T ATLANTA SHUTDOWN UPDATED?

10-9-08billnaves.jpgI`m not a racer, but a longtime fan.

Today’s cars are going way too fast for the tracks of yesterday.

These tracks were built when cars were going 150 mph. Track owners need
to lengthen the existing tracks or build new longer, safer tracks. Too
many drivers are dying because of this problem. Safe cars, yeah, safer
tracks, No. - Marty Birdcreek

FEEDBACK FRIDAY – CLAY MILLICAN: A NEWFOUND APPRECIATION

FEEDBACK ARTICLE – CLAY MILLICAN: A NEWFOUND APPRECIATION

9-26-08millican.jpg
Clay is the first Top Fuel driver I have ever personally known; sure I
have known who some are, but never had an opportunity to actually meet
one, get to know them and their family, spend time with them in their
pits at a national event.  Clay Millican and Mark Pickens, along with
their families and race team are wonderful, caring, giving, God loving
people.  My wife and I feel very special and privileged that we met
them.

We wish both families and the "Hope4Sudan" race team much success and
safety as they roar into the 2009 season in a cloud of nitro fumes! - John Birdsong

FEEDBACK FRIDAY – OUT OF THEIR ELEMENT - NASCAR DRIVERS DRIVING PRO STOCK

FEEDBACK ARTICLE – OUT OF THEIR ELEMENT - NASCAR DRIVERS DRIVING PRO STOCK

I found it to be an interesting article. The only thing I didn't like was the lack of a full pass by the NASCAR guys.

The other side of the coin is the NHRA guys trying out the Sprint Cup
cars. What I would like to see is how fast a Sprint Cup car will go on
the drag strip with proper gearing and no restrictor plates. - Chris Jeanotte

FEEDBACK FRIDAY – INDY 2008 - ELEPHANTS ON PARADE

FEEDBACK ARTICLE –  INDY 2008 - ELEPHANTS ON PARADE

Definitely one of the BEST parts of Indy. These cars, in my opinion,
represent a purity that is missing from Funny Car and Pro Stock. Though
the finals for this group are a couple days too early, anyone who
really appreciates the best of '60's technology is always standing at
the fence when that last pair leaves the line! - Scott Amiss

FEEDBACK FRIDAY – DEMANDING CHANGES – RACERS SPEAK OUT ON SHUTDOWN AREAS

FEEDBACK ARTICLE – DEMANDING CHANGES – RACERS SPEAK OUT ON SHUTDOWN AREAS

6-26-08changes.jpg
Why is it that NHRA always puts the blame
(or cost) back on the racer? Scott Kalitta lost his life at 4.97 300
mph. The first thing they want to do is slow the cars down, better
breaks, better chutes, no blow-ups. I am all for safe race cars. There
has been hundreds of thousands of dollars spent to make safer cars!

How about NHRA getting off their wallet and spending what it takes to
make safer race tracks. If its not possible at a given track, don't
race there! - Ed McCulloch

Wow! I give Scelzi & especially Vandergriff credit for speaking
up.The problems with the NHRA(& may other sanctioning bodies) and
to some extent PRO is they become so full of bureaucracy that more harm
than good can easily become the rule rather than the exception. Thanks
to Competition Plus for speaking up. - Eric Schneider

FEEDBACK FRIDAY – GUEST COMMENTARY - BOB VANDERGRIFF DELIVERS

FEEDBACK ARTICLE – GUEST COMMENTARY - BOB VANDERGRIFF DELIVERS

7-16-08vandergriff.jpgI would like Bob to send me an application to drive his race car. You are in the
wrong position! You need to work as management within the NHRA to move the
entire sport into the 21st century of sports marketing. For the Pro racer as
well as the sportsman racer. - Dave Ebbert

I
couldn't agree more with Vandergriff on this one. I think the whole
Dark Side Racing is pure genius. I’m a Hot Rod Fuller fan and I love
it. I always look back to the days of Force vs. Hoffman. Those were
good times … Snake and Mongoose ... Connie and Shirley. There have been
some great rivalries in this great sport. Let’s turn it up a notch and
give the fans something to talk about. - Brian Hirsch

First, I am a looooooog time Drag Racing fan and go back to the mid
60's as to my first race. This is my first comment to CompetitionPlus,
but if the articles keep coming in like this one it will not be my
last. I have raced, but due to any number of things have become a
informed spectator. All I can say for Bob Vandergriff and his Heartbeat
article is...Very Well Done!!!

Bob hits it right on the head. Back in the day you could find all kinds
of rivalries. It didn't matter what class you looked at, something was
going on. Now when the drivers get to the mic all you hear are a bunch
of sponsor endorsements. Don't get me wrong, we all know we are in a
new millennium and it's all about the Benjamin’s today. The point
however is the last controversy I remember is when Doug "Dougzilla"
Herbert got his nickname. I'm sure fans will remember when he had a
"little" spat with Clay Millican at the 02' race in Reading, PA. OK,
enough ranting... The sport needs characters just like back in the 60's
and 70's when the sport really grew. Until they, Ho Hum. - Michael Kohn

FEEDBACK FRIDAY – – THE QUALITY OF NITROMETHANE IS SUDDENLY IN QUESTION

FEEDBACK ARTICLE – THE QUALITY OF NITROMETHANE IS SUDDENLY IN QUESTION

7-14-08specnitro.jpg
We run two Top Fuel cars here in Australia and our supposed 90% [nitro]
acts like 94-96% and the parts say it is lean, we are killing pistons
and rod bearings like nothing else since we were forced to use this
crap. Our car run consistent 4.60's and the odd 4.5 but the parts
attrition is getting away from us since this nitro is now the only one
available … having discussed this with Kalitta's and others it does not
take a rocket scientist to tell us that something is not right and the
suppliers are not being up front with us! - Bruce Read

As I recall, some years ago the manufacturer of Nitro in the U.S. had
some type of factory fire. The big deal resulting from that was
"Chinese" Nitro. You could actually hear the difference in the car at
idle. What became of that? - Jim Millard
