FEEDBACK FRIDAY – MIKE EDWARDS – BEFORE PRO STOCK THERE WAS MODIFIED

FEEDBACK ARTICLE – MIKE EDWARDS – HIS PLACE IN HISTORY

8-22-08edwardsmodified.jpgI hated to see the Mods and Gas classes go but I got the opportunity to buy a G/G 1968 Camaro that quit so I could get into brackets.  Had some really mixed emotions about the whole thing though, because the Modified class was my favorite. - Doug Tillotson

I was in my teens intently reading those SS&DI articles on building that car, so cool.  I got to see that car for real at the Spring Nationals in Columbus, Ohio.

The Modified class was great, a great show for us fans and racer wannabes.

Heck, I wanted to turn my 70' Maverick, same color as SS&DI's, into a B/SM car, but surprise!  The class went to the scrap yard, what a mistake, what a bummer... - Jack W. Smith

Great article. He's right. Bring back modified. Hey Kenny Nowling,I'd rather see some of these than jet cars or monster trucks! - Charles Cook

Bring Modified back! They need a class the people can identify with. Too many bracket classes out there today. - Randy Wilson

Fantastic article. I was a crewman on Billy Meyer’s Chief Auto Parts FC that year, yet my racing roots were in sportsman doorslammers. I remember well when the announcement was made and applauded the drivers during their protest parade.

I remember thinking about what any sportsman racer truly meant to the NHRA. Sadly, nothing much has changed a quarter of a century later. Modified eliminator was the epitome of "real race cars" and kick ass drivers. The last sentence of the article sums it up best. Blue collar hardcore. Long live the memories! - Kevin Schmidt
