SUNDAY FINAL - STRAIGHT OUTTA FUEL HARVICK FALLS AS KENSETH CLAIMS LOUDON WIN
Kevin Harvick entered Sunday's Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway fresh off the heels of a 42nd place finish and in desperate need of a victory.
But he came just short of reaching victory lane despite leading 216 of the race's 300 laps. In the end it was fuel strategy which robbed Harvick of the victory and allowed Matt Kenseth to capture his fifth checkered flag of the season.
More importantly for Kenseth, who only led 27 laps in the race, he's guaranteed a spot in the next round of the Chase while Harvick was forced to settle for a 21st place finish.
ìI was just running as hard as I could, but you never know with those things,íí Kenseth said. ìI figured he was probably good, so I just raced as hard as I could. It looked like I thought I was going to run second, but I had some good fortune in the end."
Kenseth's win continues the domination for which Joe Gibbs Racing has carried throughout the season and if you count Denny Hamlin's win in the Sprint All Star Race gives the organization 14 wins on the campaign.
Denny Hamlin led 21 laps but settled for the runner up position. Hamlin, who won last week at Chicagoland, knows the momentous run for which JGR has been.
"We just have really been on a roll here lately, just getting good finishes and just everything is kind of clicking really well," Hamlin said. "You know, I wish we could get more race wins. That's the greedy part about it. But either way, very proud of -- this is all because of the work that Toyota and JGR puts into our race cars every week."
"Very proud to be driving for them."
Joey Logano grabbed a third place finish. The 2015 Daytona 500 champion Logano now has seven top ten finishes in 15 career races at New Hampshire, the track he considers to be home.
Greg Biffle finished in fourth place with Joe Gibbs Racing's Carl Edwards taking the fifth spot.
Jimmie Johnson came home in sixth place with Jeff Gordon, Martin Truex, Jr, Kasey Kahne, and Ryan Newman rounding out the top ten.
Tony Stewart finished in 11th followed by Brad Keselowski in 12th place; Keselowski was penalized and served a pass through penalty for jumping a restart on a lap 242.
ìItís a pretty basic understanding," Keselowski explained. "Itís an entertainment sport, not a fair sport.î
Dale Earnhardt, Jr, ran in the front for majority of the race but appeared to run out of gas as well and finished in 25th.
Another Chase contender who suffered a dismal fate at New Hampshire was Kyle Busch, who appeared to blow a right front tire and make hard contact with the wall on lap 160. Busch finished in 37th place, 38 laps down.
Earnhardt, Jr, currently sits in the 12th and final spot on the Chase grid just one point ahead of Kyle Busch and Paul Menard, who are tied in the 13th position.
Harvick now heads to the first elimination race of the Chase at Dover 23 points behind Earnhardt, Jr. Clint Bowyer, who was penalized after rules violations were found at Chicagoland, is in the 16th spot, 39 points behind.

DILLON PREVAILS AS TRUCK SERIES REACHES MAJOR MILESTONE - The milestone 500th race in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series produced important "firsts" for two key figures on the winning team.
When Austin Dillon took the checkered flag in Saturdayís UNOH 175 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, he delivered the first victory in the series to both team owner Maurice Gallagher of GMS Racing and to crew chief Shane Huffmann.
Dillon pulled away after a restart on Lap 167 of 175, a resumption that followed the sixth caution of the race, for Tyler Reddickís spin off Turn 2 on Lap 161. Dillon, who had stayed out on older tires while most other lead-lap trucks came to pit road under caution on Lap 142, crossed the finish line 1.054 seconds ahead of two-time defending series champion Matt Crafton.
"Itís very special," said Dillon, whose grandfather, Richard Childress, fielded the winning truck for Mike Skinner in the inaugural Truck Series race at Phoenix in February 1995. "I owe a lot to the Truck Series for getting me to where I am today.
"Iíve had a lot of success qualifying, racing and winning in the Truck Series. It taught me a lot about how to race hard when you have to. Itís definitely a fun series to be in, and Iím thankful for it. Hopefully, we can have thousands of races in the Truck Series. Iíve enjoyed all of mine."
Huffman, who once drove for Dale Earnhardt Jr., in the NASCAR XFINITY Series, was elated with the victory.
"This is a big day for Mr. Gallagher here," Huffman said. "Heís put a lot of effort and financial support into this teamóa lot of hard work and effort over the last couple years. Itís just great to be able to reward him with a win."
Dillon, the 2011 series champion, won his first event of the season, his first at New Hampshire and the seventh of his career.
Johnny Sauter ran third, followed by Timothy Peters and John Hunter Nemechek, last weekís winner at Chicagoland Speedway. Daniel Hemric, Jones, Austin Theriault, Dalton Sargeant and Gray Gaulding completed the top 10.
With his runner-up finish, Crafton, now second in the standings, closed his deficit to leader and seventh-place finisher Erik Jones to seven points. Reddick came home 15th and trails Jones by 19 points.
"The 33 (Dillon) was definitely a little better," Crafton said. "We missed it a little today. We fought tight, tight and just kept freeing it up, and I was just a little too free on the short run right there. I donít know what I was doing wrong, but I was missing my restarts so bad.
"My teammate Johnny (Sauter) helped me on those last couple restarts and gave me a good shove and got me down in there. I just missed it, and weíll get them next week."
Jones was disappointed with his seventh-place finish.
"We just missed it by a long ways," said the series leader. "We didnít get the finish we wanted, and weíll just have to go back and make our Tundras a little bit better.
"Itís just we canít do that this late in the year ñ we canít be that far off. Weíll just have to work on it and figure out what was wrong and how to be better here for the next six weeks."
Kyle Busch, who fields the trucks Jones drives, started second on Saturday but developed a tire rub late in the race. An unscheduled pit stop to address the problem relegated Busch to an 11th-place finish. ñNASCAR Wire Service, Reid Spencer

HARVICK TOPS FINAL PRACTICE CHARTS - A dangerous position to put the defending champion of any sport in is in a win or go home scenario. Kevin Harvick, so far, has shined in this position and he carried it into Saturday's lone practice session.
Harvick's lap of 134.577 mph edged his Joe Gibbs Racing foe Kyle Busch's lap of 134.150 mph. Harvick ran a total of 39 laps but ran his fastest lap of the session on his sixth circuit.
Brad Keselowski has been near the top of the charts in every practice session this weekend. His speed of 134.032 mph gave him the third fastest lap of the session.
Jimmie Johnson was the session's fourth fastest with Friday's top qualifier Carl Edwards rounding out the top ten.
Edwards, who ran 55 laps, had the fastest ten lap average of the session from lap 28 to 37 when he carried an average speed of 133.149.

AUSTIN DILLON WILL START AT FRONT OF TRUCK RACE - To continue Friday's theme in the Truck series, Austin Dillon was the fastest in a session at New Hampshire. This time it was one of the most important sessions, qualifying.
Dillon wasn't going to be denied in Saturday morning's qualifying session and he laid down a track record lap of 133.296 mph to take the pole for Saturday's UNOH 175.
The pole award is Dillon's fourth of the season and 13th of his NCWTS career but it's his first at New Hampshire.
Fellow Sprint Cup regular Kyle Busch grabbed the second starting spot in the session.
NCWTS regular Cameron Hayley nabbed the third starting spot. The spot will serve as his 13th top ten start in 17 races so far this season.
Erik Jones and Dalton Sargeant round out the race's top five starters.
Last week's winner John Hunter Nemechek will start the race in 12th place.

FRIDAY NOTEBOOK: FAMILIAR TERRITORY
EDWARDS SWEEPS NHMS QUALIFYING - For the second time this season, Carl Edwards finished qualifying at New Hampshire on top of the leaderboard. In fact, the only thing which has changed on the No. 19 Sport Clips paint scheme of Edwards are the yellow stripes which indicate he's a Championship contender.
Edwards' lap of 137.980 earned him the top spot at a track for which he knows track position is a huge key to success.
ìItís a tough place to decide where to be aggressive,î Edwards said. ìThis place is simple, so itís pretty straight forward, but one little mistake here or there can cost you a lot. I really had to step it up.î
Edwards now has 16 career pole position starts in his Sprint Cup career and three in his debut season at Joe Gibbs Racing. His second place finish last week behind teammate Denny Hamlin continued JGR's momentum in the first round of the playoffs but Friday's qualifying was just as important.
"We got a great start to the Chase and we're keeping it rolling," Edwards added. "We knew qualifying was important so we worked on it a lot today.î
Kevin Harvick, who is in dire straights after last week's 42nd place finish, grabbed the second place starting spot.
Kurt Busch qualified in third place with Brad Keselowski snagging the fourth starting spot.
Jimmie Johnson will start Sunday's race in fifth place.
Kyle Larson, Denny Hamlin, Joey Logano, Ryan Newman and Jeff Gordon round out Sunday's top ten starters.

THURSDAY NOTEBOOK: NECKS ON THE LINE
ROWDY LOOKING FOR HIS BROOM - Loudon, New Hampshire was the pinnacle of Kyle Busch's 2015 campaign so far. After missing time with his injury, Busch still managed to celebrate in victory lane with a huge lobster.
Kyle Busch believes Joe Gibbs Racing is more prepared for the Chase and its format this time around.
ìI feel like last year we knew going in what we needed to do in order to move ourselves through," Busch said. "Last year, Joe Gibbs Racing as a whole, we werenít capable of winning those races ñ we needed to point our way through to the end and we were doing a good job of that, a fine job of that until Talladega (Superspeedway) came around. We got wadded up on the backstretch there. We finished third at Kansas (Speedway) and fifth at Charlotte (Motor Speedway) or something and we were the best non-winner going into Talladega and still got eliminated, so anything can happen in this game. The only way to solidify your chance through to the next round is get that win and get that automatic berth to the next round."
"This year can be different for us at Joe Gibbs Racing because we do have that ability to win those races and we can go out there and try to get those wins and have that automatic berth.î
Busch knows the key to advancing in the Chase playoffs is balancing consistency and winning.
"Youíve got to have one or the other," Busch explained. "If you havenít got consistency, then you better be winning. If youíre having consistency, then you donít have to be winning. But, thereís nothing better than being able to win and move yourself automatically.î
Busch has won at New Hampshire twice, including earlier this season. He has also finished inside the top-ten 11 times in his Sprint Cup career. But Busch understands Sunday's race at New Hampshire is so short in length, it's important to remain mistake free.
"You donít (have much time to recover from a mistake) because youíre always on edge there," Busch said. "Youíre trying to go as fast as you can into the corners, as deep as you can into the corners while rolling as much speed, or just a bit higher than everyone else so you are able to get back to the gas sooner. Youíre going harder than everyone else in order to make the straightaway a little bit longer and get your momentum built back up. Itís definitely a challenging racetrack. I have won there in the past so, if we get a good car, then we might have a shot to win there."
LOGANO WANTS ANOTHER HOMETRACK VICTORY ñ Joey Logano may be a native of Connecticut but make no mistake New Hampshire is his hometrack. While Logano has two wins at the track and even won his first career race there, he knows the track wasn't always kind to him.
"This is a race track that Iíve always loved coming to, I consider it my home race track," Logano told the media at NHMS back in June. "To be able to have two really good runs here last year. We were running second before we got crashed and then we came back and won the fall race, so itís a special place for me considering I started my first Cup race here and watched my first Cup race when I was seven here, so this is just a special place to come to and Iíve always enjoyed it. Itís a tricky place.
"It took me a long time to understand what it takes to go fast, but lately the last four or five times weíve been here weíve had some fast cars."
HARVICK HAS BEEN HERE BEFORE - Kevin Harvick would love to have a mulligan, the guy who won last season's Chase in his debut season at Stewart-Haas Racing more than likely would love to take his 42nd place finish off the table.
Now it's most likely do-or-die. Win and you move on. No excuses, no two ways about it.
Harvick has been in this situation before. Actually, it was last season's Chase which saw Harvick in the same situation during the Eliminator 8 round following a 33rd place finish at Martinsville. He won the very next week on a mostly flat one-mile track for which he's dominated, Phoenix.
It's not farfetched to believe Harvick is a true contender at New Hampshire. After all he's finished third in the last two races there and has made a trip to victory lane.
Harvick knows the Loudon, New Hampshire track is difficult and if he comes through with a victory it will be a team effort.
ìLoudon is tough just because the track position is so important there," Harvick said. "Itís really hard to pass. It always seems like there is some kind of crazy strategy that plays out toward the end of the race with fuel mileage or something along those lines of when you pit, when you donít pit. Restarts always play a big factor but, at Loudon, there is definitely going to be a lot of strategy involved.î
Harvick's lone win at NHMS came back in 2006.
CUSTER LOOKING FORWARD TO LOUDON - Cole Custer put his future competition on notice at New Hampshire in 2014. NHMS was the site of Custer's first win in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.
Custer, driving the No. 00 Haas Automation Chevrolet, led 148 of the day's 175 laps en route to becoming the youngest winner in Truck series.
He believes his team can get another win this weekend.
"Our Haas Automation team is looking forward to going back to Loudon," Custer said. "Iíve had this race marked on my calendar for a while. It has always been a great track for me. I got my first win there last year, and weíre actually bringing the same truck back. The team has put a lot of work into this truck and we're even better this time. Getting back-to-back wins at that place would be a great accomplishment for us. Iím really excited and I think we will definitely have a shot at the win."
KESELOWSKI QUIETLY REMAINS ON A ROLL - Last season there would be no way Brad Keselowski could sneak up on anyone. The same can't be said this year. Keselowski has almost been completely silent this year despite have a victory but make no mistake, he's on fire.
The 2012 Sprint Cup champion and driver of the iconic No. 2 enters the second edition of Chase racing at New Hampshire fresh off an eighth place finish in the first round at Chicagoland.
For Keselowski an eighth place finish may not be setting the world on fire but put this in perspective, with the finish he became only the fifth driver since the Chase era began in 2004 to record 10 straight topñten finishes.
Keselowski is no chump at New Hampshire, either. He's the owner of a victory and five topñfive finishes in his championship career there.
NO PRESSURE ON HAMLIN, INJURED KNEE ñ The new system can raise a driver's stress level to an all time high but it can also relieve the stress when you win; which is the entire point of a playoff format.
The first such recipient of the ultimate stress reliever of 2015 is Denny Hamlin, driver of the No. 11 FedEx Toyota for the now powerhouse Joe Gibbs Racing. A remarkable run for Hamlin at Chicagoland allows him to not have to stress this week at New Hampshire.
Despite having relieved himself of most pressure Hamlin, as a competitor, remains in the hunt for personal goals.
ìIt obviously takes the pressure off of our team for the next two events, but we still have goals to accomplish this year and the win just makes us hungrier to get more," Hamlin said. "We have shown a lot of speed over the last few months and our FedEx team is starting to get the finishes to back up that speed. The whole Joe Gibbs Racing organization has been fast and we drivers are all pushing each other to be better, and youíre seeing those results on the race track. It will be great to go to New Hampshire this weekend with one goal in mind ñ to win the race. I think we can do that.î
Hamlin, who won the Xfinity series race earlier this year at New Hampshire, has two Sprint Cup wins at the oneñmile oval. He also has seven topñfive finishes and an average finish of 10.7.
FURNITURE ROW RACING MAKES PERSONNEL CHANGES - The over-the-wall pit crew for Martin Truex's No. 78 Furniture Row/Denver Mattress Chevrolet will have replacement tire changers for Sunday's Sylvania 300 Sprint Cup Series race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
Dave Collins, the regular front-tire changer, suffered an ankle injury on Wednesday during a practice session. He will be replaced by Josh Franko, who has been a backup pit-crew member for Michael Waltrip Racing (MWR).
Adam Hartman will take over the rear-tire changing duties, replacing Kyle Turner. Hartman has also been a backup crewmember at MWR.
The Furniture Row Racing over-the-wall crew is based out of the MWR shop in Cornelius, N.C.
GORDON SET TO BECOME NASCAR'S CAL RIPKEN - Jeff Gordon is listed at just 5-foot-8 and 150 pounds, but the four-time Sprint Cup series champion deserves the title as NASCARís Iron Man.
Sunday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Gordon will make his 789th consecutive start, breaking the record established by Ricky Rudd.
Gordon has endured jeers from fans, spectacular crashes and back pain to keep his tough-man streak alive.
ìItís hard to believe that Iíve been in that car every single race since 1992,î said Gordon during a recent teleconference ìIt wasnít something I really ever focused on throughout my career; I just always focused on working hard and staying healthy and being as committed to the team, from a driverís standpoint, as they have been to me. Now, here we are at 788. Itís pretty amazing.î
Terry Labonte held the Iron Man moniker at 655 straight starts before Rudd passed him in 2002.
In his typical humble fashion, Gordon praised the durability of Rudd and Labonte.
ìThose guys are way tougher than me,î Gordon said. ìIíve never had to tape my eyelids open to make the race. Iíve had some injuries along the way that Iíve had to fight through, so I have a taste of it, but certainly nothing like those guys. Those guys are way tougher.î
Gordon credits said the safety evolutions in NASCAR for helping him return to the track each week.
"This sport is safer today than it ever has been, ìhe said. "But I think itís a little bit more demanding in some ways, from how hard you have to push.
"But when you think of those guys and the conditions of the cars, they didn't have any kind of air conditioning. They dealt with some major injuries and fought through, just like Terry. Being my teammate there, Iíve seen him race with a broken hand or wrist or whatever it was.î
Gordon also shared an example of Rudd's tenacity and temper.
"I almost got in a fight with him one time," Gordon said. "And, I'm quite certain I would have lost that fight, yeah."
The battle of the once and current NASCAR Iron Men unfolded during a race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
"Rudd was no longer my teammate and I was trying to pass him,î Gordon said. ìI had a little difficulty passing him, so I did a big slide-job on him in the middle of (Turns) 3 and 4, and I donít think he was happy about that."
The fiery Rudd wasted no time in showing his displeasure to Gordon's bold move.
"He basically pushed me all the way down the straightaway and ended-up wrecking both of us by the time we got to Turn 1," Gordon said. "I showed my displeasure and he showed his displeasure.
"We had to get in the ambulance together to come back to the infield care center. And we had many, many choice words. Nothing physical, but it got pretty heated."
In addition to authoring the record for consecutive starts, Gordon has won 92 races and earned over $144 million over the past 24 seasons.
During his final season as a full-time Sprint Cup driver, Gordon has found time to look back on his mental scrapbook of memories.
"That's been one of the greatest things about this year is reminiscing about how it all started," Gordon said. "I've been able to reconnect with people that played a role along the way and significant moments that really changed my path or took it to the next level.
"Of course my step-dad (John Bickford) and my mom (Carol Bickford) have been there the whole way, so itís been great interacting with them, as well, and talking about those times, because over the years, I can't say that we always have."
The first chapter of Gordonís streak came in his first Sprint Cup race on Nov. 15, 1992 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
Despite having to endure back pain for the past few seasons, Gordon has kept charging to the delight of his fans and envy of his peers.
While Gordon admits the Iron Man honor is cool, he has more immediate concerns over the next nine races.
"I'm really focused on the Chase," he said. "That's where our priorities are and where our focus is at, but what's coming along with that is something that Iím very proud of. And I've put a lot of effort into over the years into staying healthy and competitive." - Allen Gregory
NASCAR's TRUCK SERIES MAKES 500TH START - Ask any fan of racing and they will tell you some of the best action in all of motorsports happens in NASCAR's Camping World Truck Series. Saturday's UNOH 175 will be a testament to this.
What began in 1995 as the Craftsman SuperTruck Series is now sponsored by Camping World. Mike Skinner won the series' first race back then and Ron Hornaday, Jr's, four championships and 51 victories put him atop most of the statistical categories.
Make no mistake, the NCWTS was the birthplace of many a household NASCAR names including Kevin Harvick, Carl Edwards, Kurt and Kyle Busch, Jamie McMurray and Brad Keselowski.
