Driving Joe Gibbs Racing's vaunted No. 20 in the Xfinity series comes with high expectations -- it comes with the territory. But so far in 2016 rookie Erik Jones is setting the standard and paying dividends.
Dividends to the tune of $200,000 dollars in bonus Dash4Cash money awarded from Xfinity, the series' title sponsor. Jones, who won the Dash4Cash on the highbanks of Bristol, backed up his win on the 0.53-mile concrete short track with a win a win on the one-mile concrete track at Dover International Speedway.
Jones, who was locked into the Xfinity series' Chase prior to Saturday afternoon's Ollie's Bargain Outlet 200, came in second in his Dash4Cash heat race but led 76 of the main event's 120 laps to take home the fourth Xfinity series win of his career.
"With (the race) it coming down to a short run, I knew we were in a good spot," Jones said. "I just wasn't sure about how many people were going to stay out or pit. Fortunately enough people stayed out on that last caution to let us have enough of a gap in tires to stay out front and bring home a win."
Jones believes a lot of the knowledge which was demonstrated during the main portion of the race came developed using lessons learned from the heat races.
"I learned a lot in the heat (race)," Jones admitted. "I think we both did, (crew chief) Chris (Gabehart) and I. Wasn't sure after the heat what we'd be facing kind of for the main, we had something going on where the car was just pretty rough as rubber built up on the track so I kind of fought through that and really made some good adjustments to crutch that a little bit and fix some of the things that were coming along with that."
Jones' former Kyle Busch Motorsports teammate Darrell "Bubba" Wallace battled back from having to start the heat race in a backup car to finish in second place. Wallace, driver of the No. 6 LoudMouth Exhaust Ford for Roush-Fenway Racing, understands the magnitude of the finish.
"That was big," Wallace said. "We just have to continue on. We can use this for motivation but I said earlier, we are nowhere near close to where we need to be. We are off on speed and handling and we know that. We have another off-weekend to find some more for our Ford Mustangs. We have to keep plugging away. We can't get frustrated and just give up on it.
"We have to keep our heads up and work together to get our team better."
The race's biggest surprise came from Alex Bowman who piloted the JR Motorsports No. 88 Chevrolet to a third place finish.
"It's been a lot of fun, this weekend," Bowman said. "I haven't driven a race car in like seven months so it's pretty incredible to come here and run as well as we did. It really means a lot and it just shows a lot for JRM."
Jones' closest competitor in the Dash4Cash positioning was Justin Allgaier who finished in the fourth place position. Despite winning the 40-lap heat race which Jones ran in, Allgaier never appeared to find the handling of his vehicle once the main event began.
Dash4Cash Richmond winner Ty Dillon finished in fifth place followed by Elliott Sadler, Joey Logano, Matt Tifft, Daniel Suarez and Brennan Poole.
For the winner, Jones, the win at Dover means there's another large check heading his way -- eventually.
"I'm still waiting to get my cut of the last check," Jones said. "I haven't spent any of it, yet."
