#CLASSICDRAGRACING: 1988 NHRA SUPERNATIONALS, BRADENTON, FL.

The year was 1988, and NHRA was engaged in a full-scale war, the likes of which hadn't been seen since the IHRA became a formidable force in drag racing. Texas Motorplex owner Billy Meyer had just purchased the series from Larry Carrier and moved it to Waco, Texas, and likewise pulled his crown jewel of a race track out of the NHRA and put it in IHRA.

One of the staples of the IHRA schedule was rain, and so much so the IHRA actually was recognized as "it has rained again." The Super Nationals in Bradenton, Fla., was originally supposed to be the season-opener but because of rain, it fell in line behind Darlington, which had traditionally been the season opener.

CLASSIC VIDEO - TELEVISION BROADCAST OF 1978 NHRA SUMMERNATIONALS

Take a trip back to 1978, when the NHRA Summernationals lived up to its name in early July, at the legendary Raceway Park in Englishtown, NJ. Take some time and watch this affiliate broadcast which features all the action of the incredible drag race and the accompanying commercials of the time

Let's set the stage. Shirley Muldowney was the defending Top Fuel champion, but a young Jeb Allen was coming into his own. Don "The Snake" Prudhomme was on his way to another series championship in Funny Car, but on this weekend there was a mounting opposition to the Snake's dominance. And who could have ever thought what would happen when Bob Glidden showed up with a Ford Fairmont.

Enjoy the day, or at least an hour of it, with this gem.

REMEMBERING ROLAND: LEGENDS: THE SERIES - THE LEGEND OF ROLAND LEONG

Although he had driven competitively at some loosely organized events in his native Hawaii and even though he had enjoyed some driving success in a Top Gasser on the mainland, Roland Leong probably would not have become a drag racing legend if his need for speed hadn’t sent him crashing off the end of Lions Drag Strip on his first lap as an aspiring Top Fuel driver.

STORYTELLERS WITH JIM ODDY - GIVE ME MY TROPHY BACK!!!

Storytellers, the entertaining series created by the producers of Legends: The Series, allows drag racing's legends to tell their stories of the good old days for drag racing.

Jim Oddy had two things going against him in the Southern-born and bred Pro Modified division. No. 1, he was a Yankee. And, No. 2, he ran a blown doorslammer in a sea of nitrous cars. So when Oddy's driver, Fred Hahn, won a second consecutive race, the good ol' boys protested him and the series believed they had caught him. Turns out they were wrong, and the car was legal. The problem was that the celebration in the winner's circle was done, and the trophy given elsewhere.

1985 NHRA SUMMERNATIONALS - ENGLISHTOWN (FUNNY CARS)

The 1985 season was a banner one for drag racing, and Funny Car in particular. Filled with unique Funny Cars and scores of major sponsorships, drag racing fans were treated to hot rods such as the Kenny Bernstein Tempo and especially Dale Pulde's Buick Somerset Regal. Take a trip to Raceway Park and immerse yourself in the action.

ENCORE - LEGENDS: THE SERIES - THE LEGEND OF BOB GLIDDEN

Bob Glidden was as blue collar of a drag racer as one could be. And, what made his status more impressive, is he did it on the big stage of NHRA professional drag racing.

Glidden remains a throwback when championships were earned by hard work and not so deep pockets. There were deep pockets, yes ... but they generally belonged to those trying to catch him.
