WEEKEND RACE TREAT - 1978 SPORTSNATIONALS

8-12-11cptv_modified
Travel back in time to an era when sportsman racing meant all-out competition from start to finish. There were no electronics, no cat and mouse battles down the track, and you had to win class.

Thanks to YouTube.com, we are proud to bring you the Diamond P video production of the 1978 NHRA Sportsnationals from Beech bend International Raceway in Bowling Green, Ky.

This video feature Pro Comp eliminations when the AA/DA dragsters and BB/FCs battled it out under the same umbrella.  You’ll also see Comp eliminator and one Pro Stock legend racing his Mopar. The high-winding and gear-jamming Modified cars do battle as well.

You’ll also see more than a fair share of Stock and Super Stockers.

The video is a little rough in the first part but the sound is incredible. If you’re an old school sportsman drag racing fan, you’ll be in Heaven for at least an hour.

NITRO REWIND - 8-11 EDITION

04_22_2011_cptv_nwWith the Western Swing  in the rear view mirror teams are looking to secure their position in the Countdown or looking at strategies to enhance their NHRA championship chances. Coming out of Seattle and the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Northwest Nationals and looking ahead to the 30th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals in Brainerd Minnesota, Nitro Rewind talks with winners and contenders. The show, an internet based broadcast, is hosted by Bill Stephens and features interviews from Top Fuel and Funny Car NHRA competitors, is available on the NHRA’s YouTube channel after every NHRA national event.

“The points chases are really tightening up in Top Fuel and Funny Car with only two races left before the Countdown. This episode gives you two different perspectives as the final two races approach,” said Ashley Force Hood, John Force Entertainment president.

“We were able to produce three Nitro Rewinds in a row throughout the Western Swing which is a huge accomplishment. I want to thank all the drivers who have participated so far. This is the eleventh episode and the response from drivers and fans has exceeded our expectations.”

Top Fuel driver Bob Vandergriff Jr talks about the pressure of battling for one of the last spots in the Top Ten while Funny Car’s Fast Jack Beckman examines how he will approach the final two races before the Countdown now that his Aaron’s Valvoline Funny Car has clinched his spot. Funny Car winner Tim Wilkerson won for the third year in a row in Seattle and his win could not have come at a better time he tells Nitro Rewind viewers.

Finally, Nitro Rewind cameras took a behind the scenes look at JFR chef Jonny Roscher and how he prepares champions caliber food every national event.

VIDEO DIARY: DRIVING MISS BESSIE

08_03_2011_downunderVictor Bray has a neat farm outside of Brisbane, complete with kangaroos and koala bears. What’s even neater is his race shop and collection of old cars.

So we went to Willowbank Raceway on Sunday, the second day of the meeting and while it had rained much of Saturday night and into Sunday morning, race officials elected to pull the plug until the next month. What inevitably happened after this decision is what we call the “Bill Bader Syndrome”. If you call the race on Saturday, the clouds will dissipate, sun will come out and not one single drop of rain will fall for the rest of the weekend.

VIDEO DIARY: THERE'S A YANKEE [AMERICAN] IN THE WILLOWBANK PITS

Here is a tip for anyone traveling to Australia. When you land, add a day to the day after you leave the U.S.
08_03_2011_downunder
I found this out after walking around the first day thinking I was there on Thursday and this day was in preparation for Friday. It wasn’t until late in the day on Saturday before I discovered, the professional cars weren’t qualifying on Friday. Friday had come and gone.

If I had investigated a little better, well … a lot better, I would have realized during the course of the flight I flew over the end of Thursday and into the start of Friday via the International Date Line.
