RARE 1983 NHRA CAJUN NATIONALS TV BROADCAST

The NHRA's annual visit to the Bayou in Louisiana was one always race fans could count on for entertainment. Whether it was its colorful promoter Norman "Moose" Pearah or Funny Cars staging a boycott, the 1983 edition didn't disappoint nor did it keep folks from starting a ruckus.

One of the sport's more prominent two-car teams had a plan. One team was to be a part-time effort, and the other would be a championship-chasing monster. However, the "extra" car outperformed its role and when the two met in the final; well, things didn't go as planned. We won't spoil it for you.

You'll see the legends of the day including defending Top Fuel champion Shirley Muldowney, Gary Beck, and an up-and-coming Mark Oswald.

CLASSIC VIDEO - CHICAGO STYLE DRAG RACING FROM U.S. 30 DRAGWAY

Travel back in time to a race track located 30 miles outside of Joliet, Illinois, where match racing was king.

US 30 Drag Strip in Gary, Indiana was an experience indeed, with the grandstands and the pits more entertaining with its betting and fanfare than anything else.

"It was probably more dangerous outside of the car than inside," Top Fuel racer Luigi Novelli said with a laugh. "There was a lot of betting going on there. There was some bullets flying from time to time too."

RARE VIDEO FIND - 1966 NHRA WORLD FINALS FROM TULSA

Travel back in time when the dragster would slingshot down the strip with the engines in the front, Funny Cars were still in Competition Eliminator and the Super Stocks were as the true factory hot rods.

According to NHRA, the event, held in Tulsa, Oklahoma, set an attendance record when 37,000 spectators attended the NHRA World Championship and Tulsa Invitational drags there, exceeding by a good margin the previous attendance record for any sports event in that city.

This event was originally broadcast on NBC, presented the legends of drag racing from Top Fuel to Top Gas to Super Stock.

RARE VIDEO - 1966 BAKERSFIELD FUEL AND GAS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Many historians consider the 1966 Bakersfield Fuel & Gas Championships one of the best "March Meet" events at the iconic drag strip. Though this video only shows the highlights of the revered event, it was the last 64-car show the event fielded. Iconic drag racers like Mike Sorokin behind the wheel of The Surfers dragster, James Warren in the Warren-Coburn rail, and even a cameo from Stone-Woods_Cook gasser make this video a must-watch.

COMPILATION VIDEO - THE FIRST DECADE OF PRO MODIFIED

They were once a group of old Modified Eliminator racers who traded in their small blocks, Doug Nash transmissions, and 50-pound flywheels for large displacement engines and Lencos. They traded the rigid confines of class racing for the outlaw arena of high-speed bracket racing. But they wanted more.

Then a group of Pro Stock racers, who had grown weary of fighting the relentless fight in high dollar professional drag racing, decided to put nitrous oxide on their racecars and let them "eat."

This rare video gem was broadcast on Speedvision and features coverage of the 1975 IHRA Pro Am Nationals, the traditional spring race hosted by Rockingham Dragway. Back in the day the IHRA provided an alternative to the larger NHRA and to be honest, the racing wasn't that bad. You'll see in this two-part video rewind footage of Don Garlits, Shirl Greer, Raymond Beadle, Bob Glidden, General Lee Edwards and more.

Thanks to CompetitionPlus.com reader Monty Bogan, we are able to present what will be a multi-part series of home videos shot by him at IHRA events from 1993 until 1996, focusing on the old Modified Eliminator in an era when stick shift cars winded high and dumped the clutch.

You'll see a gaggle of high-winding Corvette Stingrays, Chevy II's and Camaro working the gearbox on both eighth and quarter mile runs.

You see facilities such as the old Shuffletown Dragway, Greer Dragway, hio Valley Raceway and legends Thunder Valley Dragway in Bristol, Tenn., and Darlington Dragway in Darlington, SC.
