Sporting a patriotic new body and following with a career-best run made Gary Densham the No. 1 qualifier in Funny Car in the opening round of the Winternationals. Unfortunately Densham's moment of joy quickly turned to heartache.
The part which counted couldn't have been much better, as Densham rocketed to a 4.053 at 307.09 mph during the lone qualifying session at the season-opening NHRA Winternationals in Pomona.

This event wasn't a national event on the NHRA Winston World Championsip Series. It was instead an NHRA Division 3 points race and a staple of the drag racing "must run" events. In this event, professional drivers gathered points towards the chamnpionhip. Ironically this event was staged on the same weekiend as the NHRA Molson Grandnational in Montreal, Quebec.
Many of the teams raced both events on this weekend.
Each year, a number of drag racers, past and present gather together to honor the memories of the drag strip which operated from 1964 until it closed in 1983. The regular racers from this strip have accounted for 25 series championships from 10 different drivers.
