DRIVERS WELCOME CHANGE TO NHRA COMP QUALIFYING FORMAT

When next year’s NHRA season gets underway, the Competition Eliminator class will implement changes to its qualifying.

For the 2018 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series all competitors who have a Personal Index will qualify off that index. Competitors who do not have a PI will continue to qualify off the Class Index.

COMPETITION PRODUCTS: PROVIDING QUALITY PARTS AND MORE FOR OVER 48 YEARS

Steve Mugerauer began selling valvetrain products from his home garage in Oshkosh, Wis., in 1970 at a discount price after buying them in large bulk. His clientele slowly increased until his business grew into a full-fledge enterprise and the mail-order automotive retail giant it is today, Competition Products.

Competition Products caters to the needs of domestic engine builders with an expansive parts and tools catalog, but what sets the company apart from other retailers is the knowledge of its sales staff, which includes engine and transmission specialists, some of whom have deals with racing teams.

VOSS REVELS IN INAUGURAL PDRA OUTLAW 632 TITLE

When Outlaw 632 came on the PDRA scene, it was immediately well-received and quickly established a spot on the PDRA tour. The class will enter its third PDRA season in 2018, again competing in five of the eight events, and this time with a fresh name, Pro 632.

This season, Dillon Voss and the Voss Racing Engines Team dominated Outlaw 632, winning four of the five events and coming home with a decisive victory as the 2017 Outlaw 632 World Champion.

Thanks to his father, Kenny, who started Voss Racing Engines, Dillon and his twin brother Cory grew up in motorsports. They began learning the trade and racing at a young age, eventually going to work with their father in the engine shop.

SUMMIT RACING EQUIPMENT RENEWS ANDRA SUPPORT

The Australian National Drag Racing Association and Summit Racing Equipment are pleased to announce a multi-year renewal of their relationship.

This renewal sees the support Summit Racing Equipment has provided ANDRA’s Sportsman racers over the past three years as the naming rights sponsor of the national Sportsman Series continue.

Summit Racing Equipment Motorsport and Events Manager, Jim Greenleaf, said the performance powerhouse was always looking at ways to support Sportsman racing.

SONNY'S POWER SCORED STREET CAR SUPER NATIONALS VICTORY FOR STEVE NICHOLSON

Vancouver-based 10.5 driver Steve Nicholson is as passionate about racing as they come. His willingness to travel long distances just to race and his competitive drive to be successful are evidenced in the way he runs his program. So it’s no surprise that before making the switch to Sonny’s Racing Engines, Nicholson did his research. He talked with other racers and professionals for over a year before deciding that Sonny’s was the way to go.

His first race out with his new Sonny's 959 EFI engine was the Las Vegas Street Car Super Nationals. “We tested it a little bit and then picked at it slowly,” Nicholson said of the engine. “It came around every round to our advantage. It was our first ever weekend where everything was flawless. We didn’t have anything go wrong. The motor stood up to everything and everything else worked great. It just went on repeat and that was nice. We made 12 hits on the car. It just kept getting faster and faster. Everything we asked it to do, it did. It was quite impressive.”

NEW INCREASED PURSES FOR SPRING FLING VEGAS IN 2018

In 2016, when Peter Biondo and Kyle Seipel introduced the Spring Fling Million in Vegas, they promised huge guaranteed payouts. In 2018, the Spring Fling partners will again not disappoint.

“For 2018, we are DOUBLING our Guaranteed Winner’s Purse on Million Dollar Friday and also increasing the Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday’s purses substantially,” Biondo announced. “It will now be, at minimum, a Guaranteed $200,000 to win on Friday and $30,000 to win on the three surrounding races with no minimum car count required.”

QUICK 5: CATCHING UP WITH 2017 TOP SPORTSMAN CHAMPION JEFFREY BARKER

The 2017 season will go down as one of the more memorable years of Jeffrey Barker's racing career. He won his second NHRA Top Sportsman championship by scoring national event wins in Gainesville and Norwalk and recording four NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series victories. He also made his J&A Services Pro Mod debut in St. Louis, and his wife Lindsay, a Top Dragster competitor and national event winner, gave birth to their first child.

CompetitionPlus Sportsman's J.T. Gonzalez caught up with Barker to talk about winning a championship during a season in which he didn't plan to chase points, how the tough races went his way this year, and his future racing plans, including a possible switch of classes.

FUN IN THE SUN - SUNDAY RESULTS

They say that if you don’t like the weather in Florida, wait five minutes and it will change. Unfortunately, when you’re counting on dry conditions, that doesn’t help much. Last night’s activities were cut short when Mother Nature didn’t cooperate, forcing the continuation of the Brown & Miller Racing Solutions $20K race portion of the Fun In The Sun Series presented by Lucas Oil and Drag Racing Edge until today.
