INAUGURAL SOUTHERN SPORTSMAN SHOWDOWN TO SPOTLIGHT STOCK AND SUPER STOCK RACERS

A trio of drag racers with roots deeply entrenched in the Sportsman ranks have come together to put on a spectacular, three-day event catering solely to Stock and Super Stock racers. The unique Johnson's Horsepowered Garage Southern Sportsman Showdown is the brainchild of veteran Sportsman racers Dave Connolly, Jason Line, and Bo Butner. The Stock and Super Stock extravaganza is scheduled to take place March 19-21, 2021 at South Georgia Motorsports Park.

"We're so excited about this. It is truly an event made for racers by racers," said Butner, who has competed successfully in a variety of Sportsman and Professional categories for over two decades. "All three of us – Dave Connolly, Jason Line, and myself – we have roots in Sportsman racing, so this means a lot to us," continued Butner. "We want to put on the most awesome race for these Stock and Super Stock guys. They deserve it, and we're going to treat them right, feed them right, and make sure they have a good time."

‘FLINGS’ ADD LOHNES, PERIVOLARIS, AND LAZZARI FOR 2021

The Spring and Fall Fling Race events, a brainchild of Peter Biondo and Kyle Seipel in 2010, are gearing up for a busy 2021. Brian Lohnes, NHRA Announcer, will join Nate Hirschi in 2021 at three of the four ‘Fling’ events.

“Listening to Brian call a drag race reminds me of the days of the great Bob Frey," said Biondo. “His voice mirrors his passion for the sport and his knowledge is off the charts.” Cars have always been part of Lohnes' life growing up and he looks forward to the opportunity. “Peter and Kyle have done such an amazing job building The Fling brand that it's a big honor to be a small part of it in 2021," added Lohnes. “I have long loved working with Nate, Mike, and the rest of the squad that I will be with at these events, so saying yes to the invite was a no-brainer. I love every form of drag racing I have ever come across and the high stakes nature of this competition gives it a totally different feel from other facets of the sport. I'm looking forward to the action already." Mike Eames will finish off the 'Fling' star-studded announcing staff by teaming up with Nate Hirschi at the Spring Fling Million at Las Vegas in late March.

ENCORE - SUPER MOD: THE ORIGINAL 10.5 RACING

Back in the 1970s, long before any of the Super class racing existed, sportsman drag racers sought an affordable style of racing where they could race heads-up, with no breakout and do so on a pounds-per-cubic inch basis similar to their class racing. Their wants eventually led to the creation of Super Modified, the original 10.5 tire form of racing.

Not so far removed from the 1974 U.S. Energy crisis, class racers, then the only option for national event sportsman racing, had begun to feel the sting of extreme operating costs. Many opted for the new craze of the time, bracket racing, while a good number remained true to their craft seeking creative ways to preserve the only kind of racing they knew.

As was the case with many of the good ideas of the era, the plan began on a scratch sheet of paper and through the support of a major magazine became reality.

Car Craft Magazine presented the Super Modified concept in their July 1974 issue.
