MOTA DOUBLES, NEFF WINS IN COMP WINNERS AT NHRA DIV. 7 LODRS DOUBLE HEADER

MOTA DOUBLES, NEFF WINS IN COMP
 
Larry Mota, Orem, Utah, doubled up this weekend at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Double Header at Rocky Mountain Raceways winning both events in Sportsman Motorcycle and Clint Neff advanced to the final round in both events scoring the win in Sunday’s Comp Eliminator final.
 
Mota outran the field on Friday for the win then worked his way into the final again on Sunday to face off against Jason Clampitt, Lino Lakes, Minn. Clampitt was out first and looked to end Mota’s day but ran too quick and broke out to give Mota his second win of the weekend on his ’15 Kawasaki.
 
Neff, Arvada, Colo., was the runner up to Ralph Van Paepeghem on Friday then closed the deal on Sunday with a Comp Eliminator win over Don Bevers, Tucson, Ariz., Neff drove his ’32 roadster to a lap of 9.193 seconds, 101.97 mph after Bevers red lighted by just .001 seconds.
 
Last year’s champion Ryan McClanahan grabbed his 10th win and sixth in Super Stock in taking out Scott Burton of Golden, Colo. McClanahan, Alta Loma, Calif., was out first and ran 8.904, 146.96 for the win while Justin Lamb added another trophy to his resume in defeating Craig Maddox in Stock. Lamb, Henderson, Nev., was better at both ends of the track in his ‘17 Camaro.
 
Aaron Kinard, Rick Cates and Ryan Herem each bagged wins in the super categories as Kinard, Temecula, Calif., took home his ninth, Cates his second and Herem his forth. Kinard and Mitch Mustard were close at the start of the Super Comp final but Kinard was better at the stripe for the win. Cates made the trip from Canyon, Texas, to edge out Cameron Eddins in Super Gas and Herem, Canyon Country, Calif., got the hole shot and forced Gordon Boven to breakout in Super Street.
 
Doug Crumlich and Kacee Bootsma-Morris rounded out the winner’s list taking home the trophies in Top Sportsman and Top Dragster respectively. Crumlich, Irvine, Calif., turned a big starting line advantage into the win over Todd Young with Crumlich covering the quarter mile in 7.258 seconds at 177.44 mph. Bootsma-Morris, Olympia, Wash., parlayed a nice .021 second reaction time start into the win over John Richardson. Bootsma-Morris’ 7.347, 184.65 beat Richardson’s 6.461, 172.74.

CARNELL, MOTA LEAD FIRST HALF WINNERS OF NHRA DIV. 7 LODRS DOUBLE HEADER
 
Racing kicked off on Thursday for the first half of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Double Header at Rocky Mountain Raceways with Utah racers William Carnell and Larry Mota leading the way into the winner’s circle for the first event late Friday night. 
 
Carnell of Murray, Utah, won on a holeshot over fellow Utah racer Logan Warr (Erda, Utah) with a .007 second reaction time and a lap of 7.633 seconds at 170.71 mph for the Top Dragster title.  Warr ran out of real estate as he tried to chase Carnell down with a 7.595, 176.57.
 
Mota, Orem, Utah, won on a double breakout with Cody Cumpton in Sportsman Motorcycle. Mota got the jump at the start that pushed Cumpton to breakout with Mota posting a 9.578 on the 9.58 dial at 132.08 on his ’15 Kawasaki.
 
Leo Glasbrenner and Chris Newman both took charge of their final rounds immediately will stellar reaction times as Glasbrenner posted a .001 in Super Stock in defeating Rich Pinoski and Newman went one better with a perfect .000 off the line in Top Sportsman to put Bart Smith on the trailer. Glasbrenner, of Chino, Calif., went 10.481, 122.16 to Pinoski’s 10.838, 114.04. Newman, Lancaster, Calif., drove his ‘08 Cobalt to a 7.713, 187.22 mph lap to Smith’s 7.271, 185.60.
 
Ralph Van Paepeghem, Brad Burton and Justin Morgan each had easy wins Friday night. Clink Neff left early with a foul start to give Van Paepeghem the win in Comp as did Michael Miller in Super comp against Morgan, and local racer Brian Sanderson, South Jordan, Utah, was late at the start and watched Burton disappear down track for the win. Van Paepeghem, Garden Valley, Idaho, went 8.410, 116.50 in his ’32 roadster, Morgan, Concord, Calif., ran a 9.429 at 150.02 in his ’04 dragster and Burton, Snohomish, Wash., posted an 11.441 at 100.20 in his ’72 Firebird.
 
Val Torres and Rodger Sauder rounded out the winner’s circle with Torres, Valinda, Calif., knocking off Craig Maddox, Sidney, Neb., clocking in at 10.333, 150 mph in his ’63 Corvette and Sauder, also out of Sidney, Neb., won a close one in Super Street over Justin Cooper, Medical Lake, Wash. Sauder’s 11.319, 144.23 in his ’72 Barracuda edged out Cooper’s 11.313, 132.60 in his ’67 Chevelle.
 
Racers are back in action Saturday for the second half of the double header with final eliminations set for Sunday.
