COX, COWIE, FLETCHER LEAD SECOND DAY POMONA LUCAS OIL SPORTSMAN QUALIFYING


The second day of Lucas Oil Sportsman competition was cut short at the NHRA Winternationals when rain begin to fall Saturday afternoon. Up until this point, there was plenty of ecitement to be witnessed. 

D.J. Cox, driving the Bartone Brothers Top Alcohol Funny Car, made a monster leap from No. 14 to the top spot courtesy of a 5.471 elapsed time at 268.17 miles per hour.

John Lombardo Jr., was second with a 5.483, 268.60 while Thursday's top qualifier Doug Gordon was third with a 5.513.

Top Alcohol Dragster Shawn Cowie's personal best 5.241, 271.62 performance was enough to surpass Alan Bradshaw's 5.283 during Thursday qualifying.

Dan Fletcher, who entered the weekend one win away from 100 national event wins, remained the provisional No. 1 qualifier in Comp Eliminator with his C/Econo Altered Cobalt, running an 8.030 elapsed time, -0.670 under his index.

Super Stock and Stock completed two rounds on Friday, and in both divisions, the No. 1 qualifiers were eliminated. Gary Emmons scored the grand prize in Super Stock as a perfect reaction time helped him to get the double-breakout win over No. 1 qualifier Larry Zavala.

Nanette Stein, who entered Stock Eliminations as the No. 33 qualifier, also used a perfect reaction time to take out No. 1 qualifierLindy Lindholm.

Gary Ross retained the top spot in Top Sportsman with a 6.542, 211.96 performance as Bob Button retained the Top Dragster pole with a 6.013.

Lucas Oil Sportsman eliminations resume Saturday morning at 8 AM, PST with Stock Eliminator, third round.
