The 2020 NHRA season kicked off on Thursday with the first day of qualifying at the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals in Pomona, Ca. A full complement of NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series hit the Pomona Fairplex in both qualifying and time trials.

Shawn Cowie, behind the wheel of his supercharged, alcohol-burning dragster, was the quickest car on the property after two sessions of Top Alcohol qualifying.

Cowie, from Langley, British Columbia, stopped the timers in 5.181 seconds at 280.08 miles per hour to edge Garrett Batement, who was a distant second with a 5.251, 276.01. Joey Severance was third with a 5.269, 236.13.

In the Funny Car portion, it was Doug Gordon racing his way to the top of the list with a 5.432, 268.33 to beat out Shane Westerfield, who was second with a 5.436, 270.32. Ulf Leanders was third with a 5.452, 265.85.

Joshua Lee's H/Econo Altered is the top Competition Eliminator qualifier after two sessions, running -.713 under the index with an 8.777 elapsed time. Fellow Econo Altered racer Tibor Kadar (D/ea) was second venturing -.671 under the index with an 8.099. Doug Lambeck's D/Super Mod Automatic was third, -.644 under the index with an 8.286.

Super Stock and Stock completed their qualifying on Thursday.

Larry Zavala's GT/IA Camaro was the cream of the crop in Super Stock and heads into Friday's first round as the No. 1 seed with a -1.064, 9.586 performance. Cody Lane (SS/BS, -1.052, 8.598) and Rodger Comstock (Factory Super Stock/C, -.954, 8.696) were second and third respectively.

Steve Wann's classic Mopar was the top Stocker in Thursday's qualifying. The Modesto, Ca.-based Wann, ran a 9.942 behind the wheel of his A/Stock Automatic 1962 Plymouth Fury, notching -1.058 under the index. Doug Holder's M/Stock Automatic '69 Camaro was second (11.793, -1.057) for second and Jim Meador's D/Stock Automatic was third with a10.503, -1.047 under performance.

James Warden (Top Dragster) at 6.105, and Phil Dion (Top Sportsman) with a 6.429 rounded out Thursday's action.

Qualifying, time trials and in some instances eliminations begin at 8 AM, PST on Friday.
