Boost in a Can
Torco's Accelerator is not an octane boost; True race fuel concentrate in a can

By Annie Proffit

Torco Race Fuels’ two versions of Accelerator Concentrate could be the track- and street-racers best solution to extracting additional horsepower to the engine without submitting applications for a large line of credit.

On the market – and continually upgraded – for the past seven years, Accelerator Concentrate is offered by the bottle in unleaded and leaded formulations and as 5-gallon pails in both leaded and unleaded formulae.

According to Terry McMillen at Torco, the Accelerator Concentrate got a big push with the sport compact crowd, personal vehicle and jet-ski operators over the past few years.  “All you have to do is add one quart to bring 93 octane fuel up to 107 octane” with a five-gallon fill-up.

“This product gives a huge boost for street rods and Harley-Davidson bikes as well as other motorcycles.  By purchasing a case of quart bottles and keeping it in their trunks, buyers can get the extra power they want without incurring the spillage or contamination that a larger container might have,” McMillen continued.

With similar chemical makeup to racing fuels, Torco’s Accelerator Concentrate allows users to see “a horsepower boost right in their fuel tank,” McMillen advised.  “We’ve been doing continual work to refine the product over the years and we’ve found that people who might use 93 [octane] on the street can take their cars to the track, add no-lead Torco Accelerator Concentrate and have the immediate benefits of 107 octane race gas.”

A good deal of dyno testing on the current formula Torco Accelerator Concentrate was performed by the Alvarez brothers, Ozzie and Manny, who own Ford Mustang-based HPP Racing in Lewisville, Texas just north of Dallas.

The Alvarez brothers have been using the product for over a year and state, “It works as well for us [as race gas] when we’re using regular pump fuel,” Ozzie revealed.  Putting the Accelerator unleaded Concentrate in their 1999 Ford Mustang Cobra – or any late-model muscle car – and by advancing ignition timing, upwards of 30-40 added horsepower is not only possible, but regularly achieved.

Of course “you have to fine-tune the car’s ignition timing to make this happen, but it’s a very consistent product,” Ozzie Alvarez said.  At first he was skeptical: “I felt more comfortable using race gas.  But once the car was tuned to optimal conditions, the power was right where we wanted it,” he stated.

At last November’s SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Torco Race Fuels took two comparable cars and tested them with competition fuel and with 93-octane boosted by unleaded Accelerator Concentrate.  “We went to the dyno and kicked butt,” McMillen exclaimed after acknowledging they’d tested the two cars on Nevada roads under the blanket of deep darkness.

Especially constructed for sport compact and high RPM, high compression engines, Torco’s Accelerator Concentrate can help engines pick up anywhere from 200-400 additional engine speed under power, according to McMillen.

“It’s definitely cheaper to buy this product when you’re using 103 octane pump gas than to go to 110 octane racing fuel,” McMillen reiterated.  “The real key is that this is the least expensive add-on performance part you can put on a car to get more horsepower and it’s our biggest selling product in the aftermarket.”

Torco Race Fuels’ Accelerator Concentrate will be showing up on major auto parts stores’ shelves in the near future to increase retail customer awareness of its capabilities.  “We believe this product will eventually outsell racing fuels; it’s that good,” McMillen said.

Torco’s facts back up their claims, particularly with testimonials from racers like the Alvarez brothers in Texas.  At the present time, Torco Race Fuels’ unleaded and leaded Accelerator Concentrate is available for purchase through the company’s website in quart, case and 5-gallon quantities: www.torcoracefuels.com as well as on-site at various race tracks and through Torco’s selected race fuel distributors.

“We are dedicated to making the best fuel products on the market,” McMillen said.  His proof is in the petrol.
