Pretty Fly... (for an old guy)
Perfect Start...

By Roger Richards

The tradition when you get off of a trans-continental flight is to begin talking about all of the problems encountered. However, I just had an odd thing happen on my way from South Carolina to California for the opening of the NHRA season in Pomona.

Usually there is the grumbling about long lines, poor seats, bad service, etc. I had none of those believe it or not. I arrived at the airport just seven miles from my home for the first leg of the trip. No one was in line. As a matter of fact, no one was even in the terminal. I was able to step up to the self check-in terminal and do just that. The thing worked! I checked in and dropped off my bags and headed to the gate area. As I arrived there, a little sign on the table next to the chair I had chosen announced that FREE Internet wireless service was now available in the little airport in Greer, SC. Imagine that! And on top of that, electrical sockets were immediately beside my chair so that I wouldn’t have to use my batteries. I mused to myself: “This is starting out pretty good”. I managed to get a preferred seat on both flights and what was supposed to be full flights ended up with me having the entire row to myself with legroom to spare. The attendants were very nice and attractive and could not do enough for me. It was getting weird.

The connecting flight continued to prove the easiest ever. I arrive at gate nine and looked straight across the concourse isle to gate 10, my departing gate. Unreal. Ten steps and I was there. And I arrived 20 minutes early in L.A. and walked up to the baggage carousel just as my bag rounded the corner. Five seconds and I was out of baggage claim and able to walk out the door to my waiting ride provided by my friend in L.A., Mike Aiello. I was wondering when I was going to wake up and realize I really was asleep and had missed my flight. But it was real and it was perfect.

That was the best way to start out what is already turning out to be the best year ever in following the drag racers around the country. I left Pomona and went to the first ADRL event at South Georgia Motorsports Park.

WOW! That is all that can be said about that event. It was Pro Mod Heaven! Over 70 of the very best cars all assembled in one place…..UNREAL. What should have been a two day event turned into three days due to a bit of bad weather on Saturday night, but that only made it better for me. I got to spend another day at the track. It also was real and perfect.

Then there was my first trip to Phoenix. The travel to and from Phoenix was everything bad that you can experience in air travel. Think of all the bad things that can happen…..double it and add 50% and that is what happened. It was also real but far from perfect. However, the three days of racing in the desert sun made up for all of that. Now that was perfect.

Now I am packing to head to Houston to another ADRL event.

Things don’t get no better for the Geezer from South Carolina. (You can use language like that if you are from Greer, SC and get away with it.) This truly is what can only be described as the most wonderful start for a new year that a drag race addict can have.

Having a great time…….Wish every one of you could be with me. It’s perfect.

This week, I am adding a new sponsor to this column. It is www.SpeedSceneRacing.com.

PS: On a not so perfect note, remember my wife if you would. She is going in for a second breast surgery tomorrow followed by 7 weeks of radiation treatments. Thank you in advance for the good thoughts.
