SATURDAY NOTES - The A/Fuel Blues, Woman on a mission and a broken shifter dooms one of the Force girls...

(3-18-2006) - Randy Meyer – Continuation… - After a hard struggle during qualifying in Top Alcohol Dragster, Randy Meyer made progression in the right direction.  Meyer qualified during the final session with a 6.047.

Meyer went on to win the first round of eliminations against Marty Thacker and was able to step-up the car.  The main downfall for Meyer is the new Top Alcohol Dragster rule limiting nitro percentage.

David Ray Following his Dream - David Ray with his Follow a Dream Avenger Top Alcohol Funny Car is following a dream.  Ray qualified No. 1 with a 5.578, 256.77 MPH.  Ray’s success didn’t stop there.  He went on to win the first round of eliminations in Top Alcohol Funny Car.

A Woman on a Mission - Super Comp driver and former model Malinda Bertozzi is no stranger to the up’s and down’s of Super Comp Racing.  Starting in Super Comp several years ago, she thrives on the thrill of competition almost every weekend.  Bertozzi ran only .04 short of the index giving her a top competitive advantage.

Trouble in Paradise - Courtney Force had struggles today in Super Comp.  Mechanical trouble with her shifter has thrown her off of her game today.  Despite the trouble she is keeping the faith in hopes for a better race next time.

In the Middle of the Drama - Ashley Force is quickly proving herself as one of the best drivers in Top Alcohol Dragster.  After qualifying No. 3 with a 5.315, 264.55 MPH she went on to race against Don Fiorelli in the first round of eliminations.  In an unfortunate turn of events Fiorelli’s Blown Alcohol Dragster cut hard to the left and straight into Force’s lane.  Fiorelli’s dragster went straight into the retaining wall near half-track and just feet behind Force.  With all the commotion going on, Force was oblivious to the accident until track safety officials waved her off the track.  Force was relieved to know her unlucky opponent was okay after the ordeal and wants nothing more then for everyone to be safe.

Crash Test - Top Alcohol Dragster racer Don Fiorelli was transported to Shands Hospital at the University of Florida for observation. Fiorelli, of Palm Bay, Fla., suffered a single-car crash in which his dragster skidded in fluid that had leaked from under the tires. He drove the vehicle on two wheels for roughly 40 feet before striking the retaining wall. The car experienced a brief fire.

Fiorelli was able to extricate himself from the car but was taken to the hospital when he complained of foot pain.

More Rule Change Blues - In a big surprise, Aaron Olivarez of the Armored Coatings/Lucas Oil A-Fuel Dragster couldn’t get a good handle on the new A-Fuel Dragster rules in Top Alcohol Dragster.  Olivarez, who won this event last year, was disappointed with the lack of results.  With an “all or nothing” attitude, Olivarez is already looking ahead to the next race.  With the weight of creating a new set-up for his car, Olivarez is contemplating testing prior to the National Event in Houston.

FRIDAY NOTES - New Rules in TAD, Those Force Girls and Double Duty Dave

(3-17-2006) - Best of the Best - The low qualifiers for the day were John Finke (Top Alcohol Dragster), Frank Manzo (Top Alcohol Funny Car), Ray Vierheller, SS/GM (Super Stock), Mitch Kight, H/SA (Stock), and Ray Connolly (Super Gas).

The new rule Blues - The former World Championship team of Randy Meyer Racing is feeling the squeeze with the new A-Fuel rule change.  After two disappointing qualifiers on Friday, Meyer is looking for the winning combination.

“We are struggling a little bit with our tune-up and the new rule change.  Hopefully tomorrow will be better and we can figure-out our tune-up,” said Meyer.  “Fans can be sure the rule change is giving the A-Fuel teams a handful to contend with.  This will be continued tomorrow.”

Qualifying is a number -Richard Feldman of Ohio has been at the Super Stock game for a while.  Racing various classes since 1968, Feldman was the proud winner of his class today.  Racing his standard transmission, 283 – 1966 Impala, Richard started-off as the 37th qualifier out of 101.  Richard raced to the win light at 11.44 MPH on a 12.50 index.

Daddy’s Girls - The daughters of Drag Racing legend John Force is out to dominate their respected classes.  Oldest daughter Ashley started-off qualifying on a positive note.  Racing her A-Fuel Dragster to the No. 4 spot, Ashley ran a stout 5.40.  Just two weeks ago, Ashley found success at Gainesville Raceway by finishing runner-up against Aaron Olivarez.  According to Ashley, the plan is just to do better this year and do the best they can do.

Force power is also present in Super Comp.  The youngest Force daughters, Brittney and Courtney are starting off their drag racing career.  Missing out on morning qualifying, Brittney is excited to get back in the drivers seat.

“A few weeks ago we raced in Phoenix and went four rounds,” according to Brittney.  Although the active young lady is split between her second year in college and racing, she is out to give it all she has in Gainesville.

As if he’s not busy enough - Dave Connolly, Pro Stock heavy-hitter, is pulling double duty at the AC Delco GatorNationals.  With his first outing in his new Super Comp Dragster, Connolly is going back to his roots.

“I’m very excited to be racing Super Comp, this is where I got my start.  Our last pass we ran an 8.94, 178.”

Connolly plans on pulling double duty at 10 races in Super Comp during the 2006 season.  Dave isn’t the only Connelly to contend with.  His father Ray is also racing in Super Comp and Super Gas.  Ray won his first round of competition in Super Gas today.  Between both classes, Ray has taken home five event titles.
