Jerry Yeoman ready for Pro Modified
(3-21-2006) - Jerry Yeoman spoke words recently that the veteran mountain motor Pro Stock racing legend never thought he would. "My new Pro Modified car is ready to go."
The classic Corvette was built by Jeffer's Race Car and will run a nitrous combination. Shannon Jenkins will reportedly assist Yeoman in getting the project up to speed.
Jay Payne Repeats Pro Modified Win at Gatornationals
(3-21-2006) - In a final race won by a margin of victory of less than five feet, the AMS Staff Leasing Pro Modified Challenge presented by RPM Depot at the ACDelco NHRA Gatornationals was everything Pro Modified fans expected. From the first round of qualifying to the finals on Sunday, the stands at Gainesville Raceway were packed for every Pro Mod run.
What almost came down to a family contest between Jay and Shelly Payne, turned into the "Canadian versus the Californian." Glen Kerunsky of Priddis, Alberta took out Shelly in the semi-finals 6.145 to 6.160. Paired against the 2005 event winner and Ontario Calif. resident Jay Payne in the finals, Kerunsky gave it everything he had, but couldn't get by that Brad Anderson power. Jay repeated as the Gatornationals winner, running 6.155 to Kerunsky's 6.161.
Rick Distefano earned the top qualifier honors with a stunning 6.050/233.88 pass in his last qualifying attempt. Distefano kept his 1963 Corvette on a roll until the second round when he went down to Kerunsky in a nail-biting battle, 6.144 to 6.148.
Troy Critchley in the AMS flagship 1971 Barracuda recovered well from his Friday night pass that showed fans both sides of his car without crossing the line or hitting the wall. The Aussie earned the number 3 position with a 6.055/237.90 pass - the top qualifying speed for the event. Critchley worked all the way to the semi-finals when he was defeated by Jay Payne, 6.122 to 6.377. left in his wake were Thomas Patterson and Ricky Stivers.
None were more surprised than 2004-'05 Pro Mod world champion Mike Ashley when Joey Martin failed to qualify behind the wheel of the Torco-sponsored 1967 Mustang that carried Ashley to an unprecedented 5 event wins last season. Watching from the starting line for nearly every session, Ashley commented that it was strange watching someone else drive "his" car, but that the challenge of Funny Car is where he is focusing his efforts.
"I'm still a Pro Mod driver in my heart," Ashley said.
Next up for the series, the O'Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals in Houston Texas, March 31 - April 2. The 2005 Houston event winner, Joshua Hernandez is looking to get back to his winning ways, and Jay Payne, along with 22 other drivers will be there to try to stop that '68 Camero from carrying the local-Houston boy to a repeat.
Never a dull moment in Team Schumacher pits
(3-20-2006) - The natives are getting
restless. At least that's what's going on in Don Schumacher's Pro Stock
pits. Rumors circulating in the pits at Gainesville Raceway this past
weekend suggested that driver Richie Stevens had packed his bags and
left the race track on Sunday, bidding farewell to his driving job.
That's not the case, however, as a phone call to Stevens
confirmed. Stevens was taken aback by the rumor, which has his phone
ringing off the hook today.
"I have no clue what is going on with these rumors
and unless someone knows something I don't, they are false," Stevens
said. "I am very much happy driving for Don Schumacher and Mopar.
As far as I am concerned, I plan to stay here regardless of how tense
things get."
That tension is now at an all time high, team members
said. That rumor, by the way, had Stevens defecting to Warren Johnson's
camp as the driver of a second car. In Phoenix, Johnson shoved Stevens
in a misunderstanding about staging during quaifying. The two drivers
later made peace.
Billy Glidden confirmed that his two-race "tutorial" for Shaun Carlson was complete and he will not likely return for further events as earlier speculated. Carlson suffered his third consecutive DNQ in Gainesville.
The action doesn't stop there, though. A team member confirmed
that Rusty Glidden made the statement that Gainesville was his last
race and he would not be returning. Torco's CompetitionPlus.com is still
awaiting confirmation.
SAMPEY RACES TO PRO STOCK MOTORCYCLE VICTORY AT GAINESVILLE; Grubnic, Capps, Martino also win ACDelco Gatornationals

(3-19-2006) - For the first time in NHRA history, three
females had a chance to win a professional drag racing title at the same
event. In the end, only Pro Stock Motorcycle racer Angelle Sampey got
it done.
The most prolific female racer of all-time with 38 victories and three
series titles, Sampey beat teammate Antron Brown Sunday for the trophy
at the 37th annual ACDelco Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway. Top
Fuel racer Melanie Troxel and Pro Stock driver Erica Enders settled for
runner-up honors, with Dave Grubnic and Tom Martino denying the women
their chance at glory at the $2 million race, the third of 23 on the POWERade
tour.

NHRA issues oildown prevention notice
(3-19-2006) - The NHRA issued a letter to nitro teams on Sunday morning increasing their requirements for lower containment devices.
With many team's alleging the rev-limiters are the reason for the increased parts attrition, the NHRA will step up enforcement starting in Houston. The letter requires the "engine diaper" to cover the entire oil pan, both sides of the cylinder block and the oil pan
SCHUMACHER AND ANDERSON REMAIN PERFECT QUALIFIERS, JOIN FORCE AND SCHNITZ AS GATORNATIONALS LEADERS

(3-18-2006) - Reigning POWERade Series world champions Tony Schumacher and Greg Anderson qualified No. 1 for the third time in as many races Saturday to lead the action at the 37th annual ACDelco NHRA Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway.
John Force and Ryan Schnitz also topped their respective categories at the $2 million race, the third of 23 on the POWERade Drag Racing Series.
Terrifying Exhibition of violent horsepower

(3-18-2006) - Richard Hough, of Las Vegas, was reported to be alert and conscious by NHRA emergency services officials after his AA Fuel Altered roadster went out of control and crashed during an exhibition run Saturday. Hough, who was reported to have suffered only injuries to the right hand during the incident, was transported to Shands at the University of Florida in Gainesville for evaluation. Bazemore speaks out about NHRA mandated rev-limiters
(3-18-2006) – Whit Bazemore entered the Gainesville media center and he was undoubtedly up on the temper chip. The ire of Bazemore’s tirade? He hates the rev-limiter and he’s ready to let the powers-that-be in the NHRA’s technical department know it.
“The rev-limiter alone caused the engine explosion on Melanie Troxel’s car in Phoenix,” Bazemore said. “We’ve already hit this thing twice. As a driver you know when certain things are going wrong. If the car has a cylinder out, you can feel it. With this thing, it takes so much power out and forces you to get out of it.
“To not shut off, it’s not natural. It’s not natural to drive a car that hurt for that long.”
Bazemore was on his way to meet with Ray Alley and his entrance coincided with John Force’s low qualifying press conference. Upon exiting, Force said, “I have to go with Bazemore, this might just be the one thing we both see eye-to-eye on.”
“In my opinion, it’s incredibly dangerous,” Bazemore said. “We’ve seen proof of that.”
Jim Brissette out at Herbert camp?
(3-18-2006) - On Thursday, Jim Brissette was inducted into the International Hall of Fame. Today, Top Fuel driver Doug Herbert confirmed that he was dismissed from the team.
Herbert confirmed what he felt was an unfortunate scenario.
"Jim and I have been friends for over 15 years," Herbert said. "In business, you have to make some tough decisions. In this case, [crewchief] Wayne Dupuy and Jim just didn't mesh the way they should have."
Herbert also confirmed that other crewmember changes had taken place but denied the personnel changes had anything to do with Brissette's departure.
On a positive note, Herbert qualified for his 50th consecutive NHRA POWERade event when he landed in the 16th position at the NHRA Gatornationals.
FUNNY CAR DRIVER BAZEMORE HITS THE ROAD FOR MATCO TOOLS
(3-18-2006) - Whit Bazemore, who usually drives the Matco Tools Iron Eagle Dodge Charger Funny Car in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series at over 330 mph, took a detour to shadow Don Bailey of Green Cove Springs, Fla., on his daily route as a Matco Tools distributor.
In Florida for the NHRA Gatornationals this weekend at Gainesville Raceway
as the defending event champion, Bazemore participated in the activities of
a Matco Tools distributor on Thursday, visiting customers and selling tool
boxes.
Bazemore, who's made about five of these trips since Matco Tools came on
board as his sponsor in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series in 2000, and plans to make three per year, finds the ride-along trips to be an
interesting way to learn what a day in the life of a Matco Tools distributor
entails. "Usually it's a lot of fun," he said. "Matco Tools has 1600
franchisee distributors, and they are an important part of our racing
program, so we try to give back to them as much as we can.
"One way to do that is to go on truck rides with them as they go through
their work day and do their business. We get to meet their customers, the
end-user, the professional mechanic.
"It's really a beneficial thing for Matco Tools, and something I love
doing," Bazemore added.
John Torok, manager of motorsports marketing for Matco Tools, who rode along
with Bazemore, sees these trips as a great way to interact with the
customers and to reward top Matco Tools distributors. "It was great going to
the shops and seeing the fans come out to the truck," he said. "It was
really a rewarding experience for the distributor and for Whit.
"We ended up closing a tool box deal for Don while we were out on the truck,
so that was cool.
"Mechanics have Whit sign their tool boxes and other items. They're real
fans out there. They enjoy Matco Tools, and they really enjoy their NHRA
POWERade Series drag racing."
This week's lucky distributor Don Bailey is a top-150 seller for Matco
Tools and serves the Green Cove Springs, Fla., area.
FORCE, GRUBNIC, ANDERSON AND BROWN PROVISIONAL NO. 1 QUALFIERS AT GAINESVILLE
RACEWAY

(3-17-20060 - Thirteen-time NHRA POWERade Series world
champion John Force raced to the qualifying lead in Funny Car Friday at
the ACDelco NHRA Gatornationals at historic Gainesville Raceway.
Dave Grubnic (Top Fuel), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock), and Antron Brown (Pro
Stock Motorcycle) also opened strong at the $2 million race, becoming
the early leaders in their respective categories of the 37th annual event,
the third of 23 events in the $50 million NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.
Three-time champ Coughlin headlines Las Vegas race
(3-17-2006) -- Three-time NHRA champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. will be the star attraction of Mopars at the Strip, March 24-25, at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Coughlin will be driving Michael Ogburn's famous West Coast Hemis '68 Plymouth Barracuda in the event, which is being billed as the richest all-Chrysler Drag Race in the West.
Coughlin plans on testing his ride Thursday before competing in the MCG/Painter Dodge Fastest Super Stock Shootout during Friday's qualifying sessions for the main event -- a 12-car Hemi Super Stock Shootout to be held Saturday night.
"All the big shooters will be there so I'd better be ready," said Coughlin, who last competed at the NHRA Finals in November where he drove the JEG'S Mail Order Dodge Stratus to his 46th career victory. "We're going to race my dragster here in Ohio this weekend to get my mind back on racing. Then we'll test Michael's car the Thursday before the Hemi Shootout so I can get reacquainted with the car."
In his first outing with this particular car in 2005, Coughlin drove Ogburn's national-record-setting Barracuda to a huge victory at the Mac Tools U.S. National in Indianapolis, the sport's longest running and most prestigious event.
"I've never tested this car before the events I've run with it," Coughlin said. "I've always just jumped right into it to race because I didn't have the time in my schedule to make test runs. Now that I'm taking a break from Pro Stock, I have the time to work with crew chief Harry Holton and get in sync with the rhythm of this hot rod."
Mopars at the Strip has an overall purse of $35,000 with racing action taking place in several different categories. Coughlin stands to win $10,000 with a victory in the Hemi Super Stock Shootout and another $1,000 if he has the quickest E.T. of the weekend.
"My teammate Jerry Jenkins is the defending champion and Rick Houser, who was in the finals in Indy against me, was runner-up last year so right there you have two big hitters," Coughlin said. "We're coming off a high with our big Dodge win in Pomona but that was five months ago. Now we're jumping right into an event that could have the toughest group of racers we've ever seen in an event like this. It's exciting and it's definitely gotten my attention. I'm not taking anything for granted.
"We're happy to be racing The Strip. Certainly it's one of the premier facilities in the country and the weather in mid-March should be conducive to great elapsed times and speeds. The fans will get their money's worth at this event, I can assure you of that."

Shannon Jenkins Recuperating After Minor Heart Surgery
(3-16-2006) - As the Awesome Motorsports/Speedtech
Nitrous team heads towards Gainesville, Florida, this weekend for the
37th annual Gatornationals, it will be giving their 2005 Crew Chief
of the Year Shannon Jenkins the weekend off per doctor's orders.
Earlier this week the four-time World Champion was relaxing at home
and began having a discomfort in his chest that he knew just wasn’t
correct and immediately was rushed to the hospital.
Jenkins was admitted upon arrival and was diagnosed with having artery
blockage to the heart that warranted immediate surgery to install a
stint to open the artery. “I feel better now than I have in a
long time,” stated Jenkins “I’m very fortunate this
happened at home and we live close to DCH Memorial Hospital were Dr.
Anderson and his cardio staff recognized the situation and went to work.
The doctors told us what we need to do to recover and after this weekend
I plan on being back to work in San Antonio.”
The Awesome Motorsports team will be in full force with
World Champion Mike Castellana behind the wheel coming off his first
Pro Mod win of the season at Houston Motorsports Park two weeks ago.
“I have all the faith in the world that Brandon and Mike to do
well this weekend; the main priority is my health and family,"
said Jenkins. "Thank you for all the phone calls and concerns,
I’m doing great and look forward to the competition this season."
Pittman’s New ’62 Chevy Pro Mod Machine Impressive
in First Test
(3-16-2006)
- If the F-117 Stealth Fighter had been designed in the 1960s,
there’s a very good chance it would have looked like Alan Pittman’s
new ’62 Chevy Pro Modified car.
Pittman’s recently completed ride, based on the
famous “bubble top” Bel Air, made its first public appearance
at the recent Eastern Spring Test Nationals at South Georgia Motorsports
Park, where it joined 21 of the sport’s best Pro Mod drivers and
cars for several days of intensive testing.
After unloading the long, low, and decidedly aggressive-looking
machine, a product of Pittman’s AP Race Cars shop, the crew spent
several hours diagnosing a problem in the electrical system, which delayed
their first trip to the starting line. Once there, however, they made
up for lost time, logging a pair of impressive eighth-mile blasts before
launching the primer-black sedan on its first 1320-foot excursion. There
was no hint of “new car blues” as Pittman wheeled his unique
hot rod to a steady, straight and effortless pass of 6.295-seconds at
226.35 mph. The number was ninth best of all Pro Mod performances turned
in during the course of the weekend.
That’s a great result no matter how you slice it,
but considering it came on the first full-track pass ever made by the
menacing-in-black machine, it’s even more impressive. Adding to
the drama of the moment was the fact that it was the first time Pittman
had made a high-speed pass in a car equipped with a four-link suspension.
All of his previous cars had swing-arm suspensions.
It was in fact an outstanding couple of days all around
for the Greenville, South Carolina-based team. The first time Pittman
eased the car into the staging beams, he was only supposed to make a
330-foot squirt. Since he had spent quite a bit of time sorting out
electrical problems in the pits, however, and then waited in the staging
lanes for an extra hour as the track was cleaned up after a crash, Pittman
had already decided that he would make the most of his initial shot
if the opportunity arose.
“I
told myself that this was a car that my guys and I had built, a car
that we had faith in, and if it left straight I was going for it,”
Pittman said. “It felt rock solid at the hit, so I ran it to the
eighth. It ran 4.11 at 181, and I was tickled to death.”
After making another equally solid eighth-mile pass, Pittman
pulled into the lanes for his first shot at the top end of the concrete
quarter-mile at SGMP. As noted, the wedge-shaped classic Chevy ran under
the radar in 6.295-seconds at 226.35 mph, a result that would have gotten
Pittman into the qualified field at most IHRA events last season.
“My main goal for the weekend was just to get my
crew down to Georgia, go through the motions and hopefully go from A
to B,” Pittman said. “After all, all my guys are new except
for one. Even Mel Bush, the car owner, is new to all of this, so for
us to be able to run as fast and as straight as we did was great. Our
engine builder, Carl Spiering, wasn’t able to be with us on the
weekend, so we were kind of on our own with the new engine program,
but we managed to get through it.
“After such a good first test, we feel real good
about our chances this year, and we’re looking forward to the
IHRA opener in San Antonio,” Pittman said.
Naylor uninjured in Valdosta testing accident
(3-15-2006) - Pro Stock racer Max Naylor was uninjured when he rolled his Jagermeister-sponsored race car during a testing run at South Georgia Motorsports Park. He crashed following a 6.71 elapsed time.
According to sources, he got on the brakes after the parachutes failed to deploy. The car made a right turn into the wall and began to roll.
Naylor will be driving Larry Morgan's spare Dodge Stratus
this weekend in Gainesville.
Scott Griffin Motorsports Hires Lance Larsen; Veteran wrench-turner now a full-time advisor on Serta dragster driven by Andrew Cowin
(3-15-2006) – Lance Larsen, who has served as associate crew chief on Clay Millican’s five-time world champion Torco Racing Fuels Pro Nitro Top Fuel dragster for the last two seasons, has been tapped by Scott Griffin Motorsports as a full-time advisor to team Crew Chief Keith Stewart. Larson has joined the SGM team and will accompany it to the eMax Drag Racing Series season opener, the Amalie Oil Texas Nationals at San Antonio Raceway.
"Lance has a lot of experience and his knowledge of IHRA venues will be a big plus for us,” Griffin said. “This will help free up Keith to concentrate more on tuning the car. Plus, he’s a great guy. Keith and I brought Lance on board to really add to the depth of our race team.”
Larsen worked with Kenny Koretsky Motorsports Crew Chief Mike Kloeber to help guide Millican to the last two of the team’s five straight world championships.
“There are no hard feelings on either end,” Millican said. “Lance had another opportunity and he took it. Everyone on this race team wishes him nothing but the best.” - Mike Perry, IHRA.com
Oakley Announces Revolutionary Fire Safety Innovation
for Funny Car Drivers
All-in-one Boot Utilizes Company’s Proprietary
O-CarbonX
(3-15-2006) - Oakley, Inc. today announced
the latest invention in its motor sports racing arsenal – the
O-CarbonX boot – an all-in-one footwear design that virtually
eliminates the need for the multi-layer fire-protection currently used
by NHRA Funny Car drivers. The Oakley O-CarbonX boot combines a racing
shoe and a fire-retardant boot into one state-of-the-art, safety feature
ensuring ultimate protection and dexterity.
Since Funny Car competition began in the 1970s, drivers
have used a two-piece, cumbersome combination of a racing shoe worn
underneath a knee-high protective boot.
“Now, Funny Car pilots can slip on one layer of
footwear and have the best fire safety available thanks to Oakley’s
revolutionary O-CarbonX material,” Gary Scelzi, 2005 NHRA Funny
Car Champion said. “The boots hug your calves and fit just like
a comfortable shoe, not a bulky fire-retardant boot. It’s no surprise
that Oakley has re-invented the wheel again – it’s an ingenious
design that’s simple and functional.”
O-CarbonX is a proprietary blend of fibers developed by
Chapman Innovations specifically for Oakley. The fabric offers unsurpassed
protection against heat and flame, yet can still be worn comfortably
next to the skin. O-CarbonX flame-resistant material provides a persistent
protective barrier when exposed to direct flame reaching temperatures
in excess of 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 seconds without shrinking,
charring, or losing structural integrity.
Oakley’s O-CarbonX protective motor sports apparel
is available in long-sleeve tops, bottoms and high performance racing
gloves. The products are distributed by Speedware Motorsports, the largest
distributor of motor sports apparel in North America. More information
is available at http://oakley.com/racing.
BURKART TO FLY K&N COLORS IN GAINESVILLE
(3-15-2006) -- To a non-drag racing fan, the headline
might appear as jumbled as a spoonful of alphabet soup, but to any NHRA
Nitro Funny Car devotee, especially a Phil Burkart supporter, it all
makes perfect sense when they read "PB to switch from CSK to K&N
at NHRA AC Delco Gators." Phil Burkart will, indeed, switch
from his standard blue Checker, Schuck's, Kragen Monte Carlo to a striking
special-edition K&N Filters Chevy at the AC Delco Gatornationals,
this weekend in Gainesville.
K&N joined the Worsham program prior to the 2006 NHRA POWERade season
as a major associate sponsor and supplier of high performance filters
for the oil system, as well as for the collection of clutch dust.
As part of the new sponsorship, and in conjunction with K&N's relationship
with primary sponsor CSK Auto, the Burkart Monte Carlo will be adorned
with the K&N logo and colors throughout the Gainesville event.
"We were excited to welcome K&N to the family this year, and doubly
excited to hear about this special-edition car for the Gatornationals,"
Burkart said, from his home in upstate New York as he readied himself
for the season's first race on the east coast. "Team CSK
has a long history with these special-edition bodies, but this will
be the first time we've run one in Gainesville, so that adds even more
excitement to the whole deal. Gainesville is absolutely
one of those rare 'special'
races. It's one of our majors, so to speak, and the atmosphere
is incredible. The fans pack the place, the sun is out,
and you're surrounded by so much history. We plan to make it a
great weekend for K&N."
Jegs Stock/Super Stock Shootout returns to NSCA
events for 2006
(3-15-2006) - The Jegs Stock/Super Stock
Shootout, a special race first held at the 2004 CORTECO NSCA World Finals,
will once again be contested at all seven National Street Car Association
events for 2006. This race is open to all IHRA and NHRA legal cars and
will be run as a "combo" race where the Stock and Super Stock
cars will ultimately run against each other to determine a winner.
Saturday's qualifying will be based on the individual
published IHRA or NHRA national index the car normally runs under. From
that point on, it becomes a dial-in race for Sunday's eliminations.
Payout is $1500 win, $750 to runner-up and $50 per round back. Entry
fee is $125 for car and driver. Please note that no points will be awarded
and this eliminator is not eligible for contingency awards.
Jegs began life as one of those neat little speed shops. Back in 1960,
Jeg Coughlin Sr. opened JEG'S High Performance in Columbus, Ohio. Jeg
was a speed freak, but was limited by his Midwest location that made
it difficult to find the parts he wanted. As he slowly found the stuff
he was looking for, his buddies came to him to build their engines,
and before long he had opened the doors to a full-on retail business.
In 1988, Jeg's four sons, John, Troy, Mike and Jeg, Jr.,
purchased the operation with the assistance of their father. After several
expansions at the original location, what started out as a 4000 square-foot
speed shop now encompasses a 100,000 square-foot warehouse a chassis
shop, a call center and the original retail store. Two other stores
and two additional call centers are also located in the metropolitan
Columbus area. In the fall of 1999 a newly built state-of-the-art distribution

GAINESVILLE RACEWAY ANNOUNCES MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR EXPANSION; Multi-phase project will include luxury VIP box suites on the pit side of the facility; construction of permanent Top Eliminator Club; new race control tower complex
(3-14-2006) -- Fans heading to Gainesville Raceway this weekend for the 37th annual ACDelco NHRA Gatornationals will see the beginning of a multi-million dollar, multi-phase project designed to upgrade the entire facility.
NHRA announced today that Gainesville Raceway will undergo a major redevelopment including luxury VIP box suites atop the South Side Grandstands on the pit side. Also part of the facelift at one of the most well-known drag racing facilities in the country will include construction of a permanent Top Eliminator Club in its current location and a complete overhaul of the current race control tower and suites.
“The NHRA ACDelco Gatornationals and Gainesville Raceway have become one of the premier stops in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series and the East Coast kick-off for the 23-race season,” said Peter Clifford, executive vice president and general manager, NHRA. “This expansion project will not only enhance the fan experience for our Top Eliminator Club seat holders, but current and future suite holders.”
The first phase of the project, which will be completed in time for this year’s NHRA ACDelco Gatornationals, is a 15,000-square-foot permanent Top Eliminator Club structure located on the south side of the TEC Grandstand. The new steel framed structure with removable side curtains for inclement weather is equipped with permanent lighting and available throughout the year for hospitality functions, shows, festivals, vendor use, classroom space, display space and banquets, in addition to being the primary structure for Top Eliminator Club guests at the national event.
Immediately following the conclusion of the ACDelco NHRA Gatornationals, construction will begin on luxury VIP Skybox Suites on the south side of the main pit side, reserved seat grandstand. In all, eight individual suites will be built offering suite holders both inside and outside seating and unparalleled views of both the drag strip and the open pits. Similar in design as the sky boxes recently built at Indianapolis Raceway Park, and currently being constructed at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona (Calif.), the suites will have full glass front walls and individual chair back seating outside in front of each suite. The suites will be completed in time for the 2007 season.
As part of the master renovation of Gainesville Raceway,
plans also call for a new race control building with a state of the
art media center and 360 degree race control center on the top floor.
In addition NHRA will, in coming years, remodel the permanent restroom
facilities throughout the facility and install new permanent grandstands
on the spectator side (north side) with remodeled gates and entrance
areas to connect spectator side guests to the pit side, as well as remodel
the existing ticket buildings
There's another Pedregon in the fold
(3-14-2006) - Tony Pedregon, driver of
the Q Power Monte Carlo in NHRA's Nitro Funny Car division, and his
wife Andrea welcomed a new, healthy race fan to their family on Wednesday
afternoon, March 2, 2006. Desidario (Desi) Pedregon, was born into this
racing family in time to celebrate his famous father's birthday on March
8th. Desi is the younger brother to the Pedregon's daughters, Cecily
and Arielle.
Shirley Muldowney to be inducted into International Drag
Racing Hall of Fame
(3-14-2006) - Drag racing icon and three-time NHRA Top Fuel World Champion Shirley Muldowney, "the First Lady of Racing", will be inducted into the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame in Ocala, Fla., Thursday, March 16, during an induction ceremony and banquet at the Paramount Resort in Gainesville, Fla.
Muldowney's accomplishments as a drag racing pioneer are
lengthy. Some of her achievements include being the first woman to be
licensed to drive a Top Fuel dragster, the first motorsports personality
to be honored by the U.S. Congress with an Outstanding Achievement Award,
the first woman to win a professional NHRA national event, the first
driver, male or female, to win two and then subsequently three NHRA
World Championships, and many more accolades. She has appeared as a
guest on "The Tonight Show", and the film
based on her life, "Heart Like A Wheel", was a Hollywood hit.
Muldowney retired from driving at the end of the 2003
season. In her current role as Kalitta Motorsports' StriVectin-SD Top
Fuel dragster team sponsor relations representative, Muldowney is still
very active at drag strips across the United States as the team's quarter-mile
ambassador with driver
Dave Grubnic. Her popularity is as high as ever as drag racing fans
still line-up to get her autograph.
"It's always an honor to be recognized for what we
did on the race track," Muldowney said. "It's something we
will always take pride in because we know we always gave our absolute
best out there."
Muldowney's husband Rahn Tobler serves as crew chief on
Kalitta Motorsports' Mac Tools Top Fuel dragster driven by Doug Kalitta
in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.
Bruton sounds off again
(3-14-2006) - Our Ezine Media sister publication, CircleTrackPlus.com, had a sit-down last weekend with Bruton Smith during the Las Vegas Cup race and he remains adamant that he will have ownership of the NHRA. The latest suggestion within his group is that Smith is preparing an offer to purchase all of the NHRA-owned tracks.
Smith, during an announcement for a new construction project called Trophy Towers, a 127-unit Condo facility to be built outside the first turn at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, did not deny questions about purchasing another speedway.
Smith is anxious to bring a second NEXTEL Cup date to Las Vegas Motor Speedway. To achieve his goal, Smith said he is interested in facilities in Pennsylvania and New Hampshire. Smith also mentioned by name Darlington Raceway, but said, "I would buy it to restore the Labor Day event, not to get a date for Las Vegas."
Smith would also like to spend money purchasing the NHRA
(National Hot Rod Association). He says Jeff Byrd, President of Bristol
Motor Speedway, is heading up efforts to come to an agreement, which
would include the five facilities owned by the NHRA. Purchase of the
Glendora California based sanctioning body might also include the construction
of a state-of-the art facility at Texas Motor Speedway.
Allen Johnson's blank tires create questions from manufacturer
(3-14-2006) – Goodyear officials were wondering just what they had said or done wrong when NHRA Pro Stock competitor Allen Johnson’s Dodge Stratus took to the track this season with no-name rear slicks.
They needn’t have worried, as Johnson was a loyal as ever to Goodyear. When the rendering for his 2006 paint scheme was developed, it showed a plain black rear tire, and the folks at Mopar liked the look. Johnson’s crew simply removed the traditional yellow lettering from the Goodyear emblems on the tires, and his new look was born. “Mopar really liked this new tough camo paint scheme, and the black truck tire look, so we just made a little cosmetic change on the tires,” said Johnson. “We’d only ever run Goodyear tires, so there’s no problem at all. We were just going for a different look.”
As for the 2006 season so far, Johnson said he “wasn’t
really happy. We qualified at the first two events, but we haven’t
been able to get past the first-round blues. Maybe Gainesville will
be our sweet spot.”
IHRA Racers Dominate DragRaceCanada On-Line Awards
(3-14-2006) - In recognition of the past 2005 racing season, a recent 30 day on-line ballot period was held on DragRaceCanada.com to determine the winners of the 2nd Annual DragRaceCanada “Canadian Drag Racers of the Year” Awards.
Fans were afforded one vote per e-mail address and following the completion of a strict post-audit, DragRaceCanada.com is pleased to announce the winners for 2005.
Robbie Atchison was selected as the “Pro Driver of the Year”. The now 3X and defending IHRA Alcohol Funny Car World Champion received that honor following another absolutely outstanding Championship run during 2005. Robbie gathered 50.2% of the votes cast to outdistance Canadian Pro Mod star racer Carl Spiering who amassed 40.1% for second place. Western Canadian Pro Mod racer Glen Kerunsky placed 3rd.
Robbie Atchison’s father Bob Atchison also received some much overdue recognition as he was voted as the top “Crew Chief/Tuner” of the year. Bob took the IHRA Alcohol Funny Car class configuration to new performance heights during 2005. Besides a 3-straight IHRA World title, Bob choreographed the quickest and fastest runs in drag racing history for a “roots” supercharged machine. Bob’s 48.5% topped Spiering Motorsports Pro Mod crew chief Terry Vince and John Force’s co-crew chief Bernie Fedderly.
Wally Clark was the only repeat winner, taking the “Sportsman Driver of the Year” award for the second straight season. Clark won the honor based largely on his hard fought successful title defense within the popular Smith Performance Specialties Can-Am Stock/Super Stock Series driving his Pontiac Grand-Am. Wally collected 41.9% of votes cast in the category to edge out Ontario-based dragster racers T.J. Schippling and Jason Kenny.
IHRA Mountain Motor Pro Stock racer Larry O’Brien was a most deserving recipient of a new ballot category introduced this year – the “Most Improved/Up-and-Coming”. While Larry is hardly considered a “rookie” on the circuit he and his brother Wayne showed terrific improvement with their Dodge Stratus last season as they not only became Canada’s all time quickest and fastest Pro Stocker but were also credited with the quickest and fastest Mopar-brand Pro Stock runs in history. Larry edged out fast up-and-coming Western Canadian Alcohol Funny Car racers Nathan Sitko and Trevor Lebsack in the final voting.
DragRaceCanada wants to acknowledge all the fans who provided a record vote count during the ballot period as well as its overall presenting sponsor Eaton Electrical who graciously provided the trophies which will be presented to each winner during this spring’s IHRA Mopar Canadian Nationals at Grand Bend Motorplex.
First established in 1999, DragRaceCanada is Canada’s
#1 ranked all drag racing website which provides not only comprehensive
coverage of the Canadian drag racing scene but also all NHRA and IHRA
national events.
Rain delays final day of ESTN presented by Torco's CompetitionPlus.com
(3-14-2006) - At 11 a.m., a line of rain showers passed over South Georgia Motorsports Park just about the time things were supposed to kick off on Tuesday, but the front has passed through and brings cooler air and clear skies behind it.
Track drying is already under way, including the track's
new jet dryer, now hard at work on the hard-to-dry shutdown area. The
quarter mile dried quickly and is almost ready its morning "glue and
rubber" treatment.
Track officials expect to have the track ready for testing by noon at
the latest and is scheduled to run until around 6 p.m.
Bakersfield March Meet resumes this week
(3-14-2006) - The Goodguys 47th March Meet presented by Clay Smith Cams, originally scheduled for March 10-12 will be run in its entirety the weekend of March 17, 18 & 19 at Auto Club Famoso Raceway just north of Bakersfield.
The postponement marked the first time under Goodguys sanction the March Meet had been postponed. “It wasn’t an easy decision,” said Goodguys Senior Vice President Marc Meadors. “The forecast is much more favorable for this coming weekend and we’re confident we’ll get the race completed on the second go around. The temperatures will rebound to the mid 60s which is perfect for racing.”
The entire western US was under a cold spell last week which shut down roads in and out of California’s central valley due to record snowfall.
Big Daddy Don Garlits, the event’s official “Hot Rod Hero” is returning to Bakersfield, Friday March 17th. He will be on hand all weekend with his restored Swamp Rat 1B and will sign autographs for fans at his booth located in the Top Fuel pit area.
Over 550 competitors are returning for the event which
serves as the country’s largest nostalgia drag race. Gates open
at 8am daily. General admission is $25 Friday, $30 Saturday and $30
Sunday. A weekend pass is available for $75. For additional information,

Haddock to make burnout to benefit Children's Miracle
Network
(3-14-2006) - Terry Haddock is ready for the 37th annual AC Delco Gatornationals but before the racing action begins at Gainesville Raceway, the Lynnwood, Wash. Funny Car favorite will be making a burnout for a very special cause. On Wednesday, March 15, Haddock will be making a long, smoky burnout with his 7000 horsepower H57 Hoodia Monte Carlo on the campus of the University of Florida, Gainesville. Haddock is raising money to help the Children's Miracle Network of Shands Children's Hospital at the University.
Shands Children's Hospital is a leader in research of pulmonary acinar dysplasia, the condition that took the life of Haddock's newborn baby girl, McKailee, in November.
"The heartache of losing McKailee just 12 short hours after receiving her into our lives is indescribable," said Haddock, "and I want to do everything I can to help find a cure so other parents don't have to go through what Bambee (Haddock's fiancée) and I just did."
Pulmonary acinar dysplasia is an extremely rare condition and affects a newborn's ability to oxygenate the blood and they have no chance of survival.
Even before laying down any rubber, Haddock has collected money from his sponsors, H57 Hoodia, Torco Race Fuels, Racebricks Collectables, and Lend America. He will be presenting the Children's Miracle Network a check for $10,000.
"Thanks to my great sponsors I already have $10,000 to donate. I'm excited to do my part to help collect money and who knows maybe by the end of the weekend I'll have more to give. I'd like to collect money all year and thanks to my great sponsors, I'm off to a great start.
"It's going to be a lot of fun to do a burnout at the University, besides it being for a worthy cause. I hope a lot of fans come out and join us."
Haddock will make the burnout in the commuter lot on Lemerand
Drive at the University of Florida, Gainesville campus on Wednesday,
March 15 at 5:30 p.m.
DODGE CHARGER SET TO LIGHT UP THE STRIP IN 2006 NHRA POWERADE FUNNY CAR SERIES DEBUT
(3-14-2006) -- When it comes to racing, nobody exhibits modern-era muscle more than the Dodge drag race teams competing in the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA). So, after celebrating a 1-2 championship finish in 2005, Dodge has announced it will introduce the Dodge Charger to NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series Funny Car competition in 2006, with its debut in the NHRA Gatornationals in Gainesville, Fla., March 16-19.
The announcement comes a little more than one year following the public reveal of the 2006 Dodge Charger passenger vehicle at the 2005 North American International Auto Show and the introduction of the Dodge Charger race car to NASCAR Nextel Cup Series competition.
“The Dodge Charger is a perfect fit for the next generation of NHRA Funny Cars,” said John Fernandez, Director – Dodge Motorsports Operations. “Dodge has an incredible heritage in racing and the Charger name is synonymous with power and performance – two key ingredients to winning in any form of racing.
“We want to build on the winning tradition that our NHRA teams established in 2005 and pave a way to even more success in 2006. With the amount of research and testing that went into developing the Dodge Charger production model – the ultimate American muscle sedan – as well as the Charger Funny Car, Dodge will continue to win both on the track and on the showroom floor this year.”
The newly designed Dodge Charger Funny Car combines the latest in Dodge engineering advancements with an added boost of Dodge DNA. The race car features the same bold styling, signature grille and powerful performance found throughout the Dodge lineup, and it takes design cues directly from the 2006 Dodge Charger passenger vehicle. Dodge Motorsports worked closely with NHRA in developing the appearance and safety of the Dodge Charger Funny Car.
Don Schumacher Racing’s stable of drivers expect to be as competitive as ever in the new Dodge Charger, which could mean a shot for returning champion Gary Scelzi to become the first driver in NHRA history to win back-to-back titles in both the Funny Car and Top Fuel divisions.
Scelzi will pilot the Mopar/Oakley Dodge Charger in 2006, with runner-up championship teammate Ron Capps in the Brut Dodge Charger, and NHRA veteran Whit Bazemore in the Matco Tools Iron Eagle Dodge Charger.
Dodge will introduce the Dodge Charger in National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Funny Car competition in 2006, with the race car making its debut at the NHRA Gatornationals, March 16-19 in Gainesville, Fla. Don Schumacher Racing driver – and 2005 NHRA Funny Car champ – Gary Scelzi will pilot the Mopar/Oakley Dodge Charger (above), with teammate Ron Capps in the Brut Dodge Charger. NHRA veteran Whit Bazemore will pilot the Matco Tools Iron Eagle Dodge Charger in 2006.
Johnson Continues to Test New Goodyear Fuel Tires in
Preparation for Gatornationals
(3-13-2006)
- Tommy Johnson Jr., the most recent Funny Car winner on the
NHRA POWERade tour, is planning to put as many laps as possible on Don
Prudhomme's Skoal Monte Carlo before heading to Gainesville Raceway
for this weekend's ACDelco Gatornationals.
Johnson has been at South Georgia Motorsports Park in
Valdosta for several days, talking part in the Eastern Spring Test Nationals.
Since the fuel teams must use the new Goodyear slick beginning in Gainesville,
he'll make as many passes on the new rubber as he can before packing
up and making the two-hour trip south.
On his first attempt Monday morning, Johnson posted a
mark of 4.88.2 at 287.60 mph, taking out some cones at the top end on
his way though the traps.
Allen Johnson wins ESTN Pro Stock Chicago Style Showdown; Tommy Johnson,
Jr. sets new track record
(3-12-2006)
- Seating was at a premium for the fourth day of the Eastern
Spring Test Nationals presented by Torco’s CompetitionPlus. The
largest crowd in the six-year history of the event rolled through the
turnstiles of South Georgia Motorsports Park to watch the “Chicago
Style” eliminations. Race officials estimate nearly 7,000 spectators
watched Allen Johnson (NHRA Pro Stock), Chip Ellis (Pro Stock Bike),
Mick Snyder (Top Alcohol Funny Car), Josh Hernandez (Pro Modified),
Steve Spiess (IHRA Pro Stock) and Pat Musi (Pro Street) win their respective
categories.
This event stands unofficially as the largest gathering of professional and sportsman teams for testing, catering to cars of both major sanctioning bodies. A total of 93 teams have rolled through the gates since Wednesday including four nitro operations. As today’s show was drawing to a close, Georgia-based Top Fuel driver Bob Vandergriff, Jr. rolled through the gates along with the Vance & Hines team and several 500-inch Pro Stockers. More teams are expected to arrive on Monday pushing the total number to over 100.
Johnson, of Greeneville, Tenn., used the weekend to break in a new Dodge Stratus. Not only did he find the baseline, he also landed the top seed of the day with a 6.718, 205.76. He used that advantage to get a leg up on final round opponent Dave Connolly, who was also breaking in a brand new Chevrolet Cobalt.
Johnson nailed Connolly with a .001 reaction and never looked back en route to a 6.733, 205.44. Connolly lost despite a close .02 reaction and a 6.737, 206.20 performance.
“This suited us well today,” Johnson said. “I can’t believe how excited the fans are down here in South Georgia to watch NHRA POWERade Championship drag racing. The fans down here are great.”
Race promoters announced a three-year extension of the event shortly after its conclusion, which elicited a healthy cheer of approval from those that had sat through 80-plus temperatures all day.
They also cheered heartily when hometown favorite Ellis drove past teammate Matt Smith in the final round of Pro Stock Bike. Ellis produced an overkill 7.073, 193.77 as Smith rolled the beams and fouled, wasting a 7.036.
“This was almost like being in Gainesville,” Ellis said. “We learned an awful lot here today and I can guarantee you that we’ll implement some of it. I’m thankful they had us here today.”
Mick Snyder was declared the Top Alcohol Funny Car champion over second-generation Funny Car driver Dan Wilkerson, who spent time this weekend attaining his competition license. Wilkerson is the son of NHRA POWERade Funny Car driver Tim Wilkerson.
Multi-time NHRA Pro Modified national event winner Josh Hernandez also made the first pass on a new car this weekend. The Conroe, Texas-based driver used superior reflexes and his 1968 Camaro to defeat newcomer Matt Hagan in the final round.
“This was great,” Hernandez said. “When you bring a new car out and it goes straight it always gives you a lot of confidence. This event enabled us to find a baseline for this car and in conditions we couldn’t normally get renting a track. This was like a national event for us.”
The IHRA Pro Stock division provided the largest contingent of entries and it was only fitting the defending world champion stole the show. Spiess wasn’t deterred when opponent Rick Jones drew lane choice in their IHRA Pro Stock final round. He scored a .001 reaction time against Jones and led him all the way to the finish line with a 6.454, 218.12. Jones lost with a 6.461, 218.34.
“We’re not finished testing, but this certainly puts a big highlight on the weekend,” Spiess said. “I may have been racing for a trophy, but that wasn’t the only thing. Momentum headed into the season was huge today.”
Former NHRA Pro Stock racer turned Pro Street champion Musi also had a reason to smile. Not only did he beat another former Pro Stock driver turned Pro Street contestant, he gained the opportunity to race and test with drivers he’s not accustomed to. Today he stopped Troy Coughlin in the final round.
“This is almost like spring training before inter-league play came along in major league baseball,” Musi said. “It’s a great way to measure success.”
Making a few runs during the course of the day was Tommy Johnson, Jr., behind the wheel of Don “The Snake” Prudhomme’s Funny Car. He established a new eighth-mile track record with a 3.338.
Testing resumes on Monday with testing slated to begin
at 9 AM.
Smith remains atop of the Pro Stock testing ladder for ESTN; Warmer
weather invades Valdosta testing
(3-11-2006) – NHRA Pro Stock racer Rickie Smith had his game face on today although he was testing. The veteran driver was among six dozen professional teams at South Georgia Motorsports Park for the third day of the Eastern Spring Test Nationals presented by Torco’s CompetitionPlus.com. The SKULL GEAR-sponsored driver remained at the top of the testing leader-board with a 6.683, 206.32. Smith failed to improve on Friday’s run, but he came close with a number of 6.7-laps in the 80-degree weather that pushed the track temperature to over 111 degrees.
On this day, Smith had no aspirations of laying down a big publicity run.
“I’m just getting ready for Gainesville,” Smith said. “We worked on some suspension things today and we made enough hits to tell us whether they will work or not next week. We’re going to put on a good show for the fans on Sunday here and Monday we will get after it until Tuesday.”
“We’re going to put our main engine in there on Monday and turn up the wick. This is a pretty good deal they have going on here for the racers.”
Not only did Smith wave the efficiency flag in the face of his counterparts, he waved another one on Saturday evening. The multi-time Pro Stock champion was designated as the honorary starter for the Hooter’s Pro Cup Series South Georgia 250.
“I’m just glad I didn’t drop it,” Smith said. “That was a blast.”
Smith is no stranger to stock car racer having raced before in three Busch Grand National races.
IHRA mountain motor Pro Stock champion Steve Spiess laid down the first 6.3-second lap with a 6.397, 218.51.
The high temperatures ensured that most of the drivers worked on their warm weather tune-ups. NHRA Pro Stock competitors remained in the low-6.7 second range and the NHRA Pro Stock Bikes were led for the second consecutive day by Chip Ellis who pushed his G-Squared Buell to a 6.994, 193.29.
Danny Rowe remained the quickest of the Pro Modified entries.
The SGMP crew pushed over 200 test runs down the quarter-mile with a minimal amount of downtime. A 5:30 curfew ended the day early.
Sunday’s schedule is highlighted with Chicago Style
eliminations slated to begin at 11 AM. Gates open at 8 AM.
Car count exceeds 80 on second day of ESTN presented by Torco’s CompetitionPlus.com; Barry Grant makes return to driving
(3-10-2006) – The 6th annual Eastern Spring Test Nationals presented by Torco’s CompetitionPlus.com may have been billed as the premiere opportunity for professional teams to prepare for the NHRA Gatornationals, but this weekend it has already proven a perfect venue for driver rehabilitation. Pro Stock driver Barry Grant made a few laps since back surgery prematurely ended his 2005 season.
Grant has never felt better than he did today at South Georgia Motorsports Park when he released the clutch for the first time since early last year.
“I haven’t felt this good in 20 years,” Grant said. “I am experiencing no more pain and I find myself doing things now I have been physically unable to do in years. As far as I am concerned my orthopedic surgeon walks on water.”
Over the winter Grant had corrective surgery for two damaged disc, surgery which required an incision that extended from his waist to just under his shoulder blade.
“I had to do it,” Grant said. “I was in such excruciating pain that I couldn’t even stand long enough to empty my bladder.”
Today there was nothing but smiles for the Dahlonega, Georgia-based Grant, who is the owner of Demon Carburetors. He is optimistic that great gains have been made for horsepower through his new Charlotte, NC.-based shop.
Grant’s best run during today’s testing was a 6.864, 199.85.
More than two dozen teams added their names to the testing list today including Nitro Funny Car drivers Tim Wilkerson and Dale Creasy, Jr.
The NHRA Pro Stocker fraternity was led on the second day by veteran driver Rickie Smith as he belted out a 6.683, 206.32 as the sun faded on the Georgia horizon. Allen Johnson, who was Thursday’s quickest, posted a 6.697, 206.30 to end the day as the second quickest.
The number of Pro Stock Bikes increased by three as Chip Ellis stole the headline for the day with a 7.040, 187.21 to edge out teammate Matt Smith, whose bike yielded a 7.062, 187.23.
Danny Rowe was the leader of the Pro Modified entries
as he produced a 6.109, 228.77 in his final testing lap. Rowe, winner
of several NHRA Pro Modified events, edged out the 6.132, 233.68 recorded
by Josh Hernandez. Scott Cannon, Jr. was third with a 6.135, 236.46.
The IHRA mountain motor Pro Stock division returned to familiar domination
as defending world champion Steve Spiess posted a 6.407, 218.02 to surpass
the 6.419, 217.81 of Jeff Dobbins. Tony Gillig was third with a 6.424,
217.53.
Testing resumes on Saturday with the first runs scheduled for 9 AM.
Jim Janis Sr. Patriarch of Jan-Cen Motorsports Passes at the age of
73
(3-10-2006) - To many of the recent customers at Jan-Cen Motorsports in Elma, NY he was Mr. Janis; Rick, Joe, John and Mike’s Dad. To many of the racers and fans at the track he was Mike Janis’ Dad but, he was also Jim Janis businessman, engine builder, and racer.
In 1958 James Janis, Sr. and Tony Centra formed Jan-Cen Automotive. Now nearly 50 years later Jan-Cen Motorsports is the legacy they left behind. What started as a mere dream for quality engine service has grown into a multi-line Four Wheeler and Snowmobile dealership as well as a top of the line Engine building machine shop. Jan-Cen is now operated by four of Jim Janis’ eight children, Rick, Joe, John, and Mike.
Also in the late 50’s Jim Janis started a life long love affair with drag racing. One of Jim’s first cars was an A/G Willys with which he became well known. Because of his accomplishments as an engine builder and as a racer Jim was later approached to field a corporate backed Dodge Super Stock Team. With Dick “Barney” Oldfield at the wheel and Jim Janis behind the wrenches of the Jan-Cen Hemi Dart the duo known as the Good Guys became a fixture on the national scene in the late 60’s.
Jim continued to be involved with both racing and the
family business until his untimely passing on March 8th 2006.
The Janis family will receive relatives and friends at the WENDEL &
LOECHER, INC., FUNERAL HOME, 27 Aurora St., Lancaster, Saturday and
Sunday 2-4 and 7-9. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at
St. Mary's R.C. Church, Lancaster, Monday at 9:30 (please assemble at
Church).
D.R.A.W. Hosts 10th Annual Golf Tournament Prior to Gatornationals
(3-10-2006) - The Drag Racing Association of Women, who have been helping
injured drag racers and their families for years, will be holding their
10th annual golf tournament the Wednesday before the NHRA's Gatornationals
event at Gainesville Raceway.
This important fund raiser will be held at Ironwood Golf
Course in Gainesville, Florida on Wednesday, March 15. Entry fee is
$70.00.
Lunch will be served at noon, and tee time is 1 PM.
Sponsorship opportunities are still available. To enter,
contact Rosealee Noble at 217 -345-6537 or 217-549-3729.
Come on out and support the people who do so much for
the sport of drag racing.
Stanley & Weiss Racing Ready to Defend Pro
Outlaw Championship
(3-10-2006) - In
2003, John Stanley was named the National Street Car Association’s
Rookie of the Year. Just two years later, the Hagerstown, Maryland-based
racer was back on the podium at the year-end NSCA banquet to claim the
victor’s spoils as the 2005 Pro Outlaw champion.
With his dad, the irrepressible Camp Stanley, doing the
tuning and offering advice gleaned from years of experience with fast
supercharged cars, John, partner Axle Weiss and his crew of neighborhood
friends slugged their way to the top of the NSCA’s quickest and
fastest class in 2005. For his hard work and dedication, Camp was named
the NSCA's 2005 Professional Crew Chief of the Year.
During the past three seasons the team has worked with
a variety of chassis, body and engine combinations, working to come
up with the best, and most consistent, package possible.
Prior to the 2006 season opener in Atco, New Jersey, a
major off-season upgrade program that the Stanley-Weiss team hope will
allow them to defend their crown this season has nearly been completed.
Stanley’s ’69 Camaro, which was built by Pro Car Performance
prior to the 2005 season, has received a new aerodynamic carbon fiber
body from Kenny Farrell's South Carolina-based CFM operation.
Camp has something new up his sleeve as far as the engine
compartment is concerned as well, but the wily veteran is keeping that
information close to the vest at the present time. All he’ll say
is that the team is looking to improve on their best performance of
6.56, 217 from last season, and do it regularly and consistently.
For 2006, the NSCA has combined the Pro Street and Pro
Outlaw classes, assuring the Stanley-Weiss team of plenty of tough competition
as they shoot for their second championship in a row. With multi-time
Pro Outlaw champion Marc Dantoni returning to the scene, and perennial
Pro Street top dog Pat Musi gearing up for another winning season, the
boys from Maryland have their work cut out for them. But they proved
they were for real last season, and they’re coming back to play
in ’06.
When “Clifford the Big Red Dog” rolls into
NSCA events this season, he’ll be towing a trailer full of seriously
bad-ass new toys along with him.
"Packing Heat" with Ford Racing and the John Force Mustang
Shootout
(3-10-2006) - Ford Racing Performance
Parts is partnering with John Force and Fun Ford Weekend to encourage
owners of 2005 and 2006 Mustangs to go racing. The program, called "The
John Force Mustang Shootout" is designed to provide a no-cost,
fun filled introduction to the drag strip.
Customers who purchase one of FRPP's new Mustang Power
Packs (M-2005-FR1/FR1A. M-2006-FR1) and/or Drag Packs (M-2005-FR2/FR2A,
M-2006-FR2/FR2A) will receive a free certificate to participate in FFW's
True Street Class at one of the FFW events in 2006. Special prizes will
be awarded to those John Force Mustang T/S Shootout participants that
post the best reaction time through the weekend.
"Drag racing for the first time can be an intimidating
experience. We want to give our customers a way to feel welcome and
not intimidated at the drag strip," said Jamie Allison, manager,
Ford Racing Performance Parts. "The John Force Mustang Shootout
is ideal for new Mustang customers who purchase a Power Pack or Drag
Pack and want to test the capability of their vehicle in a friendly,
controlled environment with other Mustang enthusiasts."
John Force, thirteen-time NHRA Funny Car Champion, and
NHRA's all-time winningest Funny Car driver embodies Mustang's drag
racing heritage. "I can remember the first time I went to the drag
strip. What an experience," said Force. "My brother Louie
and I took our Ford to the local drag strip and it changed everything
for me. Had we not done that I might still be driving 18-wheelers!"
Pro Stock Drivers Discuss Horrific October Accident
Near Dallas
(3-9-2006) - Kenny Koretsky and Bruce
Allen were involved in one of the worst accidents in NHRA Pro Stock
history late last season and lived to tell about it. Sunday's edition
of George Michael's Sports Machine will feature driver interviews about
the crash that occurred during qualifying at Texas Motorplex near Dallas.
Koretsky is the owner of the Nitro Fish Pro Stock team with drivers
Mike Thomas and Dave Northrop. He also owns Clay Millican's Werner Enterprises/Nitro
Fish/OCC/Motel 6 Top Fuel team.
George Michael's Sports Machine is a late-night, nationally
syndicated program. Check your local listings for time and date of this
week's show.
Cruz Pedregon Joins Growing Texas Nationals Pre-Registered Field
(3-9-2006) – Cruz Pedregon, a former NHRA Nitro Funny Car world champion, has announced the Advance Auto Parts team’s intentions to compete at the upcoming Amalie Oil Texas Nationals. Held March 24 – 26 at San Antonio Raceway, the event marks the return of the Torco Racing Fuels Pro Nitro Funny Car class to the eMax Drag Racing Series after a 14-year layoff.
"We’re excited to be a part of the return of Nitro Funny Car drag racing to the IHRA after many years, and to do this in that region of Texas where our major sponsor, Advance Auto Parts, has such a large presence is a plus,” Cruz Pedregon said.
“The Southern Texas market is also really important
to us on the Advance Auto Parts team because of our Hispanic fan base,”
said Pedregon. “We’re really looking forward to seeing and
meeting new fans, and to entertaining all of Advance Auto Parts’
Customers at San Antonio Raceway with the full-blown show we’re
bringing into town…the rig, hospitality and our souvenir trailer."
During his rookie season in Funny Car in 1992, Pedregon
won the NHRA world championship. With this accomplishment he became
the only racer other than John Force to win the championship in the
90s. In 1997, Pedregon was also the first motorsports athlete to receive
the “Premio De Oro,” the only national award for Hispanic
athletes.“As momentum for the Amalie Oil Texas Nationals builds,
people are becoming increasingly interested in our Torco Nitro Funny
Car class,” IHRA President Aaron Polburn said. “Cruz is
a former world champion, has 27 career wins, has gone over 330 miles
per hour. As a fan, how can’t you be excited to hear a veteran
name like Cruz Pedregon?”
Born into a racing family, Pedregon’s father, Frank,
raced Top Fuel dragsters in the 1960s. His brothers Tony and Frank also
compete in the Nitro Funny Car ranks. In 1980, Cruz won his first official
drag race at the age of 15, driving a 1953 Kenworth truck.
"The San Antonio area is really important to our family
in general,” stated Pedregon. “My mom’s family is
based out of the San Antonio region, so I am really excited to be able
to race in front of them in their hometown. I am also glad to be going
back to that area of the country because that is where my father started
his racing career, at a place called Alamo Dragway. He didn’t
move to Southern California until he had raced in the San Antonio area.”
Goodguys March Meet Postponed until next week
(3-9-2006) - The Goodguys 47th March Meet presented by Clay Smith Cams, originally scheduled for this weekend, has been postponed one week and will be run the weekend of March 17, 18 & 19 at Auto Club Famoso Raceway just north of Bakersfield. The bleak weather forecast which is predicting a 70% chance of rain showers for Friday and Saturday coupled with record low temperatures and snow levels down to 1500 feet, caused Goodguys officials to postpone the event.
This marks the first time under Goodguys sanction the
March Meet has been postponed. “It wasn’t an easy decision,”
said Goodguys Senior Vice President Marc Meadors. “The forecast
kept getting worse and worse with a 70% chance of rain Friday and Saturday.
We could most likely handle a few passing rain showers but the cold
temperatures are going to be the main problem. After meeting with the
racetrack, we all agreed the impending forecast of rain and cold temperatures
would cause unsafe racing conditions. We will not take a chance when
it comes to drivers safety.”Every facet of the event has been
postponed one week including the annual Goodguys/VRA Banquet which was
to be held tonight to honor last year’s Goodguys VRA Champions.
The banquet will now be held next Thursday night, March 16th at the
Doubletree Hotel in Bakersfield.
Racers and event participants who pre-entered the event should hold on to their confirmation letters and passes. All passes will be honored for the re-running of the event.
To reach the Goodguys offices, you can call (925) 838-9876.
To reach Auto Club Famoso Raceway, please call (661) 399-2210.
Record Breaking Performances expected at South Georgia Motorsports Park’s
Eastern Spring Test Nationals
(3-09-2006) - Track records are expected to fall this
weekend during the Eastern Spring Test Nationals presented by Torco’s
CompetitionPlus.com at South Georgia Motorsports Park. Already known
as one of the fastest tracks in the nation, SGMP boasts a full concrete
quarter mile at near sea level. The extremely long track ensures that
drivers do not fear having adequate stopping distance and can stand
on it all the way to the finish line.
One category will definitely establish a new record. No Top Fuel dragster
has ever raced at SGMP. The unlimited track record is held by Jessie
Harris in a jet-powered car at 5.269 301.00 mph. This record is expected
to be lowered by at least half a second this weekend.
Similarly, no nitro Funny Car has ever made a full quarter-mile run
at SGMP. When the track was only a few weeks old, Tim Wilkerson made
a couple of aborted attempts, but no times were recorded. This record
should drop into the four-second zone.
The NHRA Pro Stock track record is considerably better than the official
NHRA standards. Kurt Johnson ran 6.604 and Warren Johnson ran 210.08
mph during testing in December, 2005. On the IHRA Pro Stock side, Pete
Berner holds the current track record at 6.382 219.94 mph.
Pro Stock Motorcycle track records are held by Angelle Sampey at 6.942
and Paul Gast at 196.27. Sampey's run came in testing earlier this month,
but Gast's speed is also the official AMAProstar record set last weekend.
In Top Fuel bike, Larry "Spiderman" McBride holds the both
ends of the track record with a 5.926, 248.66 also established last
weekend at the ProStar event.
The Pro Mod record should also be easily eclipsed at the ESTN. Pro Mods
have only run the full quarter mile one time at SGMP during the ADRL/AMS
race last summer. The current track records, set under extremely hot
conditions, are held by Troy Critchley at 6.201 and Thomas Patterson
at 230.25 mph. The recent ADRL Winter Drags showed the true potential
of the SGMP racing surface, when the current eighth mile track records
were set by Jason Scruggs at 3.893 194.74, the best times ever recorded
for a Pro Mod. At this same event, Shannon Jenkins set the nitrous Pro
Mod eighth mile track record at 3.992 186.00 mph to become the first
nitrous racer in the 3s at an eighth mile track.
Jay Payne holds the Top Alcohol Funny Car track records at 5.767, 248.52
. The Alcohol Dragster track records are held by Lee Callaway at 5.459
and Michael Gunderson at 267.64.
Earlier in the year, current NHRA Pro Stock champion Greg Anderson praised
the South Georgia Motorsports Park team.
“You usually have a great facility or great personnel but it is
rare indeed to have both at the same place,” Anderson said. “But
you have both right here, I can’t say enough about Shad Dean and
the entire team at this place. The track is absolutely perfect, we switched
lanes and we were not able to tell any difference. The lighting is unbelievable
here. We ran last night under the lights and it was wonderful. This
is the first time I have been to this track and it is astounding. Most
places are difficult to work with as far as things you may need with
respect to the track, but the people here really listen and they provide
what you need.”
Gates open each day at 8 AM, on Thursday, March 9, 2006 through Tuesday.
The fee for spectators is $20. On Sunday’s Chicago Style Eliminations
day, shakedown runs begin at 9 AM, with the first round scheduled for
11 AM.
Spectators can receive a $5 discount on Sunday’s admission if
they present their Saturday’s Hooter’s Cup ticket.
Eastern Race Fuels to bring Torco Race Fuels to Eastern Spring Test
Nationals
(3-8-2006)
- Eastern Race Fuels is en route to the Eastern Spring Test
Nationals with a transporter chock full of Torco Race Fuels racing gas,
methanol and Pro Nitro Nitromethane. The transporter will be in attendance
at South Georgia Motorsports Park throughout the weekend.
As of early Wednesday afternoon, 20 or more teams have
already rolled through the gates at SGMP.
KENNY BERNSTEIN TO BE INDUCTED INTO TEXAS MOTOR SPORTS HALL OF FAME
(3-8-2006) - National Hot Rod Association
legend and six-time champion Kenny Bernstein along with Indy-car designer
and team owner Jim Hall have been named 2006 inductees into the Texas
Motor Sports Hall of Fame. Bernstein and Hall were chosen by a panel
of 20 television, radio and newspaper reporters across Texas, including
Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio, Midland and Tyler.
Bernstein and Hall are third year inductees into the prestigious Hall
of Fame, and they will be honored at a gala on April 5 at the Texas
Motor Speedway Club and Grand Ballroom. Dallas Morning News motorsports
columnist Terry Blount will perform the induction ceremonies for Bernstein.
Bernstein, who grew up in Lubbock, and lived in Dallas where he owned
businesses for many years, is being honored for his achievements specifically
in drag racing. Bernstein also owned Indy Car and NASCAR teams in the
late 1980s to the mid-1990s.
“It is a privilege to be chosen by a blue ribbon panel of Texas
media for such a great honor,” said Bernstein. “Texas holds
a special place in my heart. I got my start in racing in the Dallas
area as a young adult, and in fact, some of the friends who helped me
get started in racing plan to be at the gala. It will be fun to share
the evening with those that helped launch my career.
“I owe a debt of gratitude to the media who bestowed this honor
upon me.”
It is an anticipated that the event will be attended by as many as 1,000
people, ranging from Texas Motor Speedway season ticket holders to those
who support the inductees. Others being recognized this year are NASCAR
team owner Jack Roush as Texas Motor Speedway Racer of the Year, Raymond
Beadle as Bruton Smith Legends Award Winner and David Starr, Texas Motor
Speedway Sportsmanship Award Winner.
Past inductees into the Texas Motor Sports Hall of Fame include A.J.
Foyt, Johnny Rutherford, Terry Labonte and Lee Shepherd.
Proceeds from the Texas Motor Sports Hall of Fame event
go to Happy Hill Farm, a residential school for at-risk kids in Granbury,
in association with Speedway Children’s Charities.
U.S. ARMY CONTINUES SPONSORSHIP OF NHRA’S YOUTH
AND EDUCATION SERVICES PROGRAM IN 2006
(3-8-2006) - The U.S. Army will continue
to sponsor the NHRA Youth and Education Services (YES) program presented
by the U.S. Army during the 2006 POWERade Series season, NHRA officials
announced this week.
The YES program demonstrates to young men and women the variety of career
opportunities within motorsports and the Army. Headlined by the U.S.
Army team of three-time and defending Top Fuel world champion Tony Schumacher
and the Pro Stock Motorcycle duo of Angelle Sampey and Antron Brown,
speakers encourage students to think about how the decisions they make
today will affect their career opportunities later in life. Schumacher,
Sampey and Brown are all teammates under Don Schumacher Racing.
“Since becoming the presenter of the YES Program in 2000, the
Army has encouraged hundreds of thousands of young men and women to
identify and strengthen their individual talents to achieve life-long
success,” said Col. Thomas Nickerson, director of strategic outreach
for the U.S. Army Accessions Command. “We’re proud to continue
this program with a new generation of young Americans.”
The U.S. Army offers a variety of experiences for NHRA fans of all ages
– from an impressive interactive display complete with simulators
and a rock climbing wall in Nitro Alley to its marquee series of special
programs offered in the classroom or at the track.
NHRA’s Youth and Education Services Department was founded in
1989 and is one of the premier education programs in motorsports that
provides quality programs and activities for schools and youth organizations
nationwide. Since its inception, the department has worked directly
with more than a million youngsters in free trackside and classroom
programs.
At the track, students attend a 45-minute presentation by officials
from NHRA, Don Schumacher Racing and the U.S. Army before receiving
complimentary tickets to watch a full day of POWERade Series Drag Racing
action.
In 2005, nearly 25,000 youth attended YES at events around the country.
This year two Funny Car drivers, ’05 Auto Club Road to the Future
award winner Robert Hight and former high school teacher Gary Densham
will inspire youth with stories of their own ascents to the top ranks
of the world’s fastest motorsport.
“The YES program has been invaluable to NHRA’s efforts at
youth outreach,” said Gary Darcy, NHRA senior vice president,
sales and marketing. “Our partnership with the U.S. Army has given
us the chance to give youth the motivation and ability to spot their
unique talents and choose a career path that makes the most of those
abilities – all against the exciting backdrop of NHRA POWERade
drag racing.”
As one of NHRA’s fastest growing programs, YES develops track
site and classroom programs for students in kindergarten through college.
Staff members team with teachers and youth leaders to focus on four
themes: the need for continued education; the value of job specific
training; the relevance of establishing clear, attainable goals; and
awareness of the tremendous variety of career options.
A Note From Ronnie Sox
(3-8-2006) - In response to our recent
feature story on drag racing legend Ronnie Sox, the man himself wrote
to express his gratitude and to also address an oversight. The article
failed to mention the role that Dave Christie played in the success
enjoyed by Sox over the years.
Christie built and maintained the Sox & Martin cars,
and Ronnie said that he couldn’t have done what he did without
him and his expertise.
Ronnie wanted to apologize for not giving Christie acknowledgment
during writer Steve Reasbeck’s interview, but he wanted to be
sure that the man behind much of his success received the credit and
recognition he justly deserves.
Consider it done, Ronnie!
Athey and Mohegan Sun Racing Crew ready for 2006; Red
Line Oil and Moroso join as Sponsors
(3-8-2006)
- It has been a long, cold winter in New England, but Paul
Athey and the Mohegan Sun racing crew have been working up a sweat during
the snowy season.
For 2006 Athey has made the switch back to his roots,
back into the seat of a blown 1941 Willys Pro Mod. Paul has driven just
about everything from bracket cars to Top Fuel dragsters, but Pro Mod
has always been his favorite.
“I was always the happiest driving a Pro Mod,”
Athey said. “The speed of a Top Fuel car is incredible, but swapping
feet and shifting a Pro Mod is just a total blast. There is really nothing
else like it.”
After purchasing the car from Andrew Williams in the late
fall of 2005, the team began gathering the parts and pieces necessary
to form the car, which was primarily raced in the eighth-mile, into
a quarter-mile contender.
“It has been a really busy winter,” Athey said. “We
were able to get the car at the end of December from Tommy Mauney and
we have been working nights and weekends ever since.”
This season promises to be an interesting one for Athey
as it will be his first while holding the title of team owner.
“I am nervous and excited for 2006,” Athey
said. “It’s all on me. Don’t get me wrong. I have
some awesome help with this deal, but I am the person who is ultimately
responsible for this car and team. It’s not easy but it’s
fun,” he said. “I really like the pressure. At my job and
in my personal life I tend to find the pressure positions. I seem to
thrive on it. Many times we have made it into races on the last shot,
that is when I am at my very best,” Athey said.
The team will concentrate its efforts on selected IHRA
events and match races during 2006, so there is literally no telling
where the Mohegan Sun backed 1941 Willys could show up.
“We plan on running the IHRA race at Rockingham
as our first real serious effort of the year,” Athey explained.
“We will do some testing before that and get ready to try and
make a historically tough field.”
Helping Athey and the Mohegan Sun crew reach that goal
will be the good people at Red Line Oil Company. Known as an industry
leader in all forms of motor racing, Red Line has pledged their support
of Athey’s Pro Mod run in 2006.
“It means a lot to have Red Line Oil as a sponsor
in 2006,” Athey said. “This is the best oil out there, bar
none, and we are proud that they selected our team as someone to represent
the Red Line Oil brand in drag racing for 2006. We look forward to showing
the world what kind of results Red Line Oil can produce in our race
car.”
To keep all of that good oil in the motor Athey has joined
forces with Moroso, another Connecticut-based outfit with a legendary
history in the sport of drag racing.
“Moroso is an awesome product sponsor to have on
board,” Athey said. “We use their pans, ignition wires,
and heck, I even check the tire pressure with one of their gauges.”
Athey knows that there will be a learning curve while
he and the crew get their tune-up together, but with the kind of mentors
that Athey has had throughout his career, it won’t be long before
the Willys is laying down big numbers.
With a Tommy Mauney-built race car, a Chuck Ford blower
motor under the hood, and a shoe as experienced as Paul Athey behind
the steering wheel, there shouldn’t be a lot of gambling on the
success of the Mohegan Sun team in 2006. It’s money in the bank.
Scott Griffin Motorsports Brings Nitro to NASCAR Country

(3-8-2006) - Scott Griffin Motorsports
is proud to release the first images of its new facility that is currently
under construction in Wilmington, North Carolina. In addition to housing
the Serta Top Fuel racing operation, the new complex will have space
for a complete second team.
Griffin tapped Dal-Knox Inc. to handle the construction of the new facility,
which is slated for completion by mid-season. “We’re excited
to be building such a top-notch facility that will accentuate the first-class
team Scott has put together here in Wilmington N.C,” said Stan
Hollingsworth, president of Dal-K
