IHRA Season in Review, Part 1

IHRA ACDelco Canadian Nationals

Foley Defends Title in Toronto; Atchison, Spiering and Spiess Also Victorious at Record-Setting Event

(7-31-2005) - Last season Doug Foley won the first of his three rookie year Ironmen at Toronto Motorsports Park. This year he won his first in Toronto again.

Foley (Sewell, N.J.) defeated Bruce Litton (Indianapolis, Ind.) in the Top Fuel final to claim his first Hooters IHRA national event victory of the season and fourth of his career at the ACDelco Nationals at Toronto Motorsports Park. He also passed Litton in the world championship points standings and has his sights set on Drummonds, Tenn. Resident Clay Millican, IHRA Top Fuel’s top gun.

He is 13 points ahead of Litton and 137 behind Millican.

“We don’t give up, we stay focused on winning round by round,” Foley said. “That’s our job. A lot of things have to happen for us to be able to come up on Clay, but we intend to put pressure on him. He has a great team over there and they have a lot of experience. They have eight or nine full-time crew guys and that’s a big advantage over most other pro teams. They are a world-class team.”

Foley was the #1 qualifier at the ACDelco Canadian Nationals, the third time he has claimed the top post this season. He defeated Louie Allison (Denver, Colo.) in the first round and teammate Rick Cooper (Boise, Id.) in the semifinals to advance to the championship. In the run for the Ironman Litton shook his tires at the 330-foot mark and lifted out of the run, enabling Foley to cruise to the championship with a 4.795/299.13 pass.

IHRA Northern Nationals

Millican Back on Track with victory

It has been about a month since Clay Millican suffered the most serious crash of his IHRA Top Fuel career. At the Dukes of Hazzard Motor City Nationals in Milan, Mich. the Drummonds, Tenn. resident experienced a spectacular blowover at over 225 mph, ending his run of five consecutive Hooters IHRA national event victories and putting a challenge in front of him he had never experienced before.coming back from an accident that could have been a lot worse than it actually was. Millican was unhurt in the crash, but mentally a blowover can take some time to overcome.

By defeating Doug Foley (Sewell, N.J.) in the final of the Torco Race Fuels Northern Nationals at US 131 Motorsports Park, Millican served notice to the rest of the IHRA Top Fuel world he is back and as good as ever.

Although the blowover was fodder for numerous highlight films and news blurbs, Millican insists it was not a big deal and he was not really that affected.

Last Race of the Season Well Worth the Wait; Atchison Wins Funny Car Title While Millican Puts Exclamation on 2005 Season

(10-30-2005) - It may have taken an extra three weeks to complete, but it was well worth the wait. The Udderly Smooth World Finals at Rockingham Dragway saw history times two as Rob Atchison used a record setting day to claim his third straight Funny Car title and Clay Millican won his unprecedented ninth consecutive race at the track he has virtually owned since 2001. Joining Atchison and Millican in the professional winners circle were Mike Janis in Torco Pro Modified and Frank Gugliotta in Torco Pro Stock.

Fans were also treated to record setting performances in each of the pro classes, as Millican demolished the Top Fuel standard with a pass of 4.484 on Saturday night, Mike Bell backing up his record setting pass of 6.046, Atchison posting a 5.685 on his way to locking up his championship, and Robert Patrick setting the Torco Pro Stock record with a pass of 6.360.

Atchison, from London, Ont., removed all doubt about the championship picture when his record-setting run against Thomas Carter coupled with Jim Sickles' trouble-filled shut down run against Fred Tigges propelled the Canadian to his third straight crown.
