Stott, Baker, and Team Texas Close ADRL Season with Wins
(10-15-2005)
- The curtain dropped on the FLOWMASTER American Drag Racing
League's first full season Saturday night, with Quain Stott, Keith Baker,
and a team of Texas-based drivers winning titles at the GetWorkComp.com
Lonestar Fall Drags presented by Pinnacle Business Solutions and coming
away with victories they can savor during the coming off-season.
DRAGSTOCK II winner Stott won his second Pro Extreme event in a two-
week span, beating ADRL Pro Extreme champion John Lynam in their
final-round matchup, 4.011 to 4.620. Lynam entered the final as the
favorite, having won five straight eliminations rounds with five
straight 3-second passes during the two-day event, but his bid to
back up his ADRL world title from Friday night's "Battle of the
Belts" eliminator fell short when his '63 Corvette got loose about
midway through his run. Stott's 189.34-mph speed in the final was the
quickest ever recorded in ADRL history.
In
Pro Nitrous, Keith Baker finished off a solid day that began with
a No. 1 qualifying effort and ended with his first ADRL event win.
The final came down to the top two qualifiers, with Baker holding on
to win with a 4.30 that outdistanced Ken Thomas' troubled 6.10. The
final was the third in ADRL competition for Baker, who recorded back-
to-back runner-up finishes earlier this season against nitrous-oxide
legend Shannon Jenkins.
For the first time, the ADRL's unique team competition did not
feature teams split into FLOWMASTER Outlaws and AMS All-Stars.
Instead, a team of four Texas-based drivers attempted to defend their
state's honor - at a track that bears their state's name - in a three-
round series of head-to-head races against a team of non-Texans. The
home-state team was up to the challenge, winning eight of the 12
individual races and scoring a 13-5 win, including their five bonus
points for low e.t. or top speed of each round.
AMS Staff Leasing Pro Mod Challenge series regulars Frankie Taylor
and Troy Critchley were the leaders for the Texas team Saturday
night, combining to score 10 of the team's 13 points. Taylor was the
only driver in the team competition to go unbeaten over all three
rounds; he also added two bonus points for his 4.046/180.91 run in
the first round.
The 2006 FLOWMASTER ADRL season will kick off with DRAGPALOOZA II,
the first major sanctioned drag racing competition of the year, Feb.
17-18 at Valdosta, Ga.

LYNAM, PARKER WIN 2005 ADRL TITLES

(10-14-2005)
- Fittingly, the final matchup Friday evening for the 2005 FLOWMASTER
American Drag Racing League Pro Extreme championship came down to the
season's most consistent drivers. And the form chart stayed consistent
right until the end, with points leader John Lynam (Lil' Red '63 Corvette)
posting his third straight 3-second pass - and adding an .005 light into
the mix - to hold off second-place Bil Clanton (Big Money '53 Studebaker),
3.959 to 4.014, and claim the Pro Extreme title on the opening day of
the GetWorkComp.com Lonestar Fall Drags presented by Pinnacle
Business Solutions.
Friday's other big winner in the ADRL's "Battle for the Belts"
competition was Dan Parker, who continued his stellar second half of
the season by beating Rex Kelley in an all-'63 Corvette Pro Nitrous
final when Kelley left before the Tree was activated. Parker was
racing in his third consecutive ADRL Pro Nitrous final, having
earlier won the title at the second Valdosta, Ga., stop and finishing
as runner-up to Shannon Jenkins at the ADRL Fatheadz.com DRAGSTOCK II
event.
The
top eight points-earners in each of the two ADRL classes from the
first five events of the season were eligible to compete in the
"Battle of the Belts" competitions to determine the 2005 FLOWMASTER
ADRL world champions. In addition to prize money, Lynam and Parker
were awarded championship belts similar to those won in professional
boxing's championship bouts.
As he has been for much of the 2005 Outlaw Pro Mod season, Lynam was
the man to beat in Friday's three-round championship battle. He was
racing in his fourth straight ADRL final and fifth overall, a record
of success that began with his eliminations win at last year's
inaugural DRAGSTOCK event, which was also the first race sanctioned
by the ADRL. Friday at Texas Raceway, Lynam reeled off successive
marks of 3.943 at 185.74 mph, 3.962/185.84, and 3.959/185.13 in his
wins over Todd Bauknecht, Michael Neal, and Clanton.
The ADRL will conclude its 2005 season with a busy day of racing
Saturday at Texas Raceway. Following two rounds of qualifying,
eliminators will be held in both classes at 5 p.m., followed by the
Texas vs. USA Team Challenge at 6 p.m. The ADRL's team-vs.-team
concept features 11-man squads squaring off over three rounds of
competition, with one point being awarded for each head-to-head win.

"Battle for the Belts" Will Determine ADRL Champs
(10-14-2005) - Fridays at FLOWMASTER American Drag Racing
League events are usually reserved for open testing and grudge racing,
with nothing more at stake for the drivers than shaking out any lingering
gremlins before Saturday's action begins. That will all change this weekend
at Texas Raceway, however.
For 16 drivers, Friday evening's "Battle for the Belts" competition
at the GetWorkComp.com Lonestar Fall Drags presented by Pinnacle
Business Solutions will represent some of the most important runs
they've ever taken in their Outlaw Pro Mod cars. Those 16, divided
into eight-car fields for Pro Extreme and Pro Nitrous competition,
will battle over three rounds of eliminations on Friday evening to
determine the 2005 FLOWMASTER ADRL champions.
The two eight-car FLOWMASTER ADRL championship fields were determined
by points earned during the first five events of the season, which
began in February in Hattiesburg, Miss. In Pro Extreme, John Lynam
(1,737 points) and Bil Clanton (1,227) were the leaders, winning
three of the five events between them, while Shannon Jenkins (1,830)
and Johnny Pilcher (1,230) were the toughest Pro Nitrous competitors.
Jenkins won three of the five Pro Nitrous events, including the
DRAGSTOCK II title earlier this month in Jackson, S.C.
On Saturday, the Lonestar Fall Drags will feature a new twist on the
ADRL's unique team-vs.-team concept. A competition between 11-man
teams representing the state of Texas and non-Texans will compete
over three rounds on Saturday, with one point being awarded for every
head-to-head win. In the previous three ADRL team events, the 11-man
squads were divided into FLOWMASTER Outlaws and AMS All-stars.
Following is a list of the scheduled first-round matchups for
Friday's ADRL championships (qualifying spot in parentheses):
Pro Extreme
(1) John Lynam vs. (8) Todd Bauknecht
(2) Bil Clanton vs. (7) Joshua Hernandez
(3) Mike Neal vs. (6) Herman Sheppard
(4) Michael Neal vs. (5) Quain Stott
Pro Nitrous
(1) Shannon Jenkins vs. (8) Rex Kelley
(2) Johnny Pilcher vs. (7) Rickie Smith
(3) Keith Baker vs. (6) Charles Carpenter
(4) Dan Parker vs. (5) James Hancock
