"Gasser Wars" by Larry Davis
Gasser Wars is the second drag racing book penned by Larry Davis and it
is just as comprehensive as the first. Davis’ last offering was
"Super Stock drag racing the family sedan" and was chocked full
of vintage photos and blow-by-blow race results.
This book is excellent in the fact that it highlights the gassers but
it also includes some of the coolest cars that have slipped through the
historical cracks including those that ran in Modified Production, Street
Roadster and Modified Sports. From the hundreds of color photos showing
gassers in all of their nose-high glory to the wild Modified Sports class
entries (how about an Austin Healey with a blown Hemi?!) this book covers
all of its bases very well.

Do not look for a catch-all here. There is nothing of note on fuel
dragsters or funny cars; it specializes on specific cars and topics and
does that very well. Year-by-year rule revisions are covered. Match race
stories are covered, you name it and it’s in there.
Downsides
are few in this publication. While many times drag racing books tend to
cover the same stories and topics over and over, Davis makes his own path
here. Many of his stories have not been told on this scale and in this
detail. Detail may be the only sticking point in this one.
Although not as slow of a read as his previous publication, Davis is
very thorough in his recounting of these classes year-by-year. If you are
a nut for stats and results you’ll love this. If you are just a history
buff, you may find yourself skimming the text at points to oogle the
unbelievable volume of photos that you simply will not see in any other
book.

All in all I really enjoyed this book. We have all seen many photos of
the big names in the gasser wars, Ohio George, Big John, Jack Merkel,
Stone, Woods and Cook, etc. It is the photos of the wild AA/Street
Roadsters and wacky Modified Production and Sports cars that really made
this book especially entertaining.
If you love the Gassers and some of the off-beat machinery that took to
the strip back in the "golden age," get a copy of this book!
