World Championship Car Hits Dow Jones Business Wire
(12-7-2004) – Ebay is quickly becoming a place
that one can find anything they need – including the quickest and
fastest Carroll Shelby-endorsed machine on the planet. Mike Ashley, newly
crowned NHRA AMS Pro Modified Champion, put his championship winning ’67
Shelby G.T. 500E up for sale on the popular online auction venue. Ashley’s
proposition attracted more than just a tire-kicker or two. It caught the
attention of editors for Businesswire.com, the official news source for
Dow Jones.
Ashley was blown away with the inclusion on the page.
“This is pretty incredible when you think about it,” Ashley,
a New York mortgage banker said. “I think it just goes to show you
the popularity of a man like Carroll Shelby and the reach that drag racing
commands.”
The bid started at $395,000.00 and could reach the seven figure mark
before bidding is closed December 17th.
The car is the drag race version of the 67 Shelby Mustang GT500E featured
in the movie “Gone in 60 Seconds”. Carroll Shelby himself
was at the finish line when Mike Ashley pulled the parachutes and stopped
the 230 MPH World Championship Shelby to accept the 2004 Championship
trophy.
“I believe marketing our World Championship car on Ebay would provide
us with the deepest market penetration and the highest level of exposure
for this transaction”, Ashley added.
Ten percent of sale proceeds will be donated to the Carroll Shelby Children’s
foundation.

Two former IHRA National Tracks defect to NHRA sanction
(12-7-2004) -- NHRA officials announced, today, that
four drag racing facilities have joined its member track program. NHRA’s
Southeast Division has signed member track agreements with two tracks,
while the South Central and Pacific divisions have each signed one new
racetrack.
The Southeast Division’s newest tracks are Bradenton Motorsports
Park, a quarter-mile facility located approximately 35 miles south of
Tampa, Fla., and Sunshine Dragstrip, an eighth-mile track, just west of
Tampa. Bradenton Motorsports Park will host a round of the NHRA Lucas
Oil Drag Racing Series in February and both facilities will participate
in the NHRA Summit Racing Series and the NHRA O’Reilly Auto Parts
Jr. Drag Racing League.
In the South Central Division, Red River Raceway is the latest member
track. The quarter-mile facility, located 20 miles north of Shreveport,
La., will hold a round of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series and will
participate in the NHRA Summit Racing Series and the NHRA O’Reilly
Auto Parts Jr. Drag Racing League.
Albuquerque (N.M.) National Dragway is a quarter-mile track in the Pacific
Division and will run the NHRA O’Reilly Auto Parts Jr. Drag Racing
League.
“We are pleased to welcome these great drag strips into the NHRA
member track family,” said Tom Compton, president, NHRA. “Preserving
the right to race is extremely important to NHRA and cultivating member
track participation has been one of our most important initiatives during
the past five years. NHRA will always take great pride in supporting facilities
that embrace, conduct, and showcase NHRA's grassroots race programs."

PMRA ANNOUNCES CONFIRMATION OF FIRST EVENT FOR 2005
(12-06-2004) - The recently-established Pro Modified
Racing Association is pleased to announce its first race venue for the
upcoming 2005 season.
The PMRA has confirmed it will hold an event July 1-3, 2005, at Luskville
Dragway, situated just outside of Aylmer, Quebec.
“I think this is great thing for drag racing and for Canadian drag
strips,” said Luskville owner/promoter Arnie Malcolm. “This
event will help bring us to the next level.”
Malcolm, who has operated the NHRA-sanctioned strip for 25 years, added
his track has been continually upgraded over the years to present the
best in drag racing, and the scheduled PMRA event will provide the stimulus
to continue improvements at the track.
“We’re very pleased to get our first race,” stated Bruce
Mehlenbacher, PMRA Director of Operations. “We’re looking
forward to working with Arnie and his people.”
Over $21,000.00 in guaranteed prize money has been posted, with $5,000.00
to the winner of this event. Only PMRA members will be allowed to compete.
Mehlenbacher, who has been instrumental in the formation of the new series,
added the Luskville date is the first set PMRA race to be held in 2005.
A five-race series at tracks in Ontario, Quebec, and New York is planned
and the list of confirmed PMRA series teams will be announced this week.
The PMRA is a self-governing organization with its own set of technical
and safety rules based on the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA)
Pro Modified division. Cars in the PMRA capture the true spirit of hot
rodding, and the class offers a widely-diverse group of race cars with
different types of 2000-horsepower engines propelling the cars down the
quarter-mile in the 6.20-second range at 230 mph.

Master Chief Lee McKinney come these photographs of our brave troops showing
off care packages sent by such teams as Jeg's, Mike Ashley's Gotham City
Racing and Tommy Lipar Racing. Soon we will have addresses so that we

David Baca's plans for 2005 season
(12-4-2004) – Coming off a sophomore season that
began with high expectations, followed by disappointment, then ended with
a show of great potential for 2005, David Baca announced plans for next
year for Baca Motorsports.
After a respectable showing during his rookie season in 2003, a season
which saw the Brentwood, Calif., driver nominated for the Automobile Club
of Southern California Road to the Future Award and finish No. 7 in the
NHRA POWERade point standings, Baca felt he could contend with the well
financed teams in 2004. But early exits from events in the spring, coupled
with pressing business commitments forced Baca to leave the 2004 NHRA
POWERade Drag Racing Series at Topeka, Kan.
During the self-imposed hiatus, the Baca family, including his father
Dennis, a former drag racer, got together and decided to reincarnate the
previous racing program, this time as a family racing operation. Thus
was born the D. Baca & Family Top Fuel Dragster, which made its debut
at Seattle and ran a limited schedule the remainder of the season.
After a short learning curve and an adjustment to the new 85 percent
nitro rule, the team came on strong, especially during the final two races
of last year.
“Yes, we were disappointed that we had such a bad beginning to
2004,” said Baca. “We regrouped after the middle of the year
and for the balance of the back half of the season we were in test mode.
It took us a while to understand the new fuel rules. But tuner Rick Henkelman
stayed with it and we began to show that our performance had come back.
I think in the last three or four races you saw the potential of our team.”
At Las Vegas in October, the D. Baca & Family Dragster ran it best
time of the season when it covered The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway
quarter-mile in 4.526 seconds at over 325 mph.
Then at Pomona, site of the season-ending Auto Club of Southern California
Finals, Baca ran a career best elapsed time of 4.487 seconds down Pomona
Raceway in the opening round of qualifying on Thursday to earn the third
spot on the qualifying ladder. He then advanced to the semifinals before
a malfunctioning mag ended his day.
“We’re very excited about going into the ’05 season.
My father and I have decided to run the entire 23-race POWERade schedule.
We’ll continue to run as a private enterprise but we would like
to believe that we are going to get the help that is needed financially
and enable us to contend for the championship,” said Baca.
“With the rigorous schedule and demands of running a Top Fuel dragster,
my longtime friend Rick Henkelman has elected to spend some time at home
taking care of personal business. Rick and I go back to the 80s together.
We raced against each other in both the alcohol funny car and dragster
classes. If it wasn’t for Rick, I probably wouldn’t be in
Top Fuel today. I wish him and his wife Linda the best in their so called
retirement, but my guess is he’ll be back at the track before too
much longer.”
“We’ll miss Rick, but in his absence Larry Meyer, who joined
the team in 2004, and my Dad, an icon in the sport of drag racing, will
handle the tuning duties. An unsung hero and jack-of-all-trades, Kevin
Poynter, will continue as crew chief. Kevin, who is currently undergoing
his licensing procedures for his Top Fuel license, will also handle the
testing duties. In addition, Kevin and I will be in charge of all administrative
duties.”
Baca pointed out that his program continues to evolve and feels that
the changes will strengthen the team in 2005.
“Since my father has got involved with our program it has evolved
quite rapidly. I think you can see some of the results by our performance
over the final races of 2004. For 2005, I think we’re in great hands.
Dennis Baca and Larry Meyer will do just fine. Our performance will continue
on an upward path. And I can’t say enough good things about Kevin
Poynter; he has been a gem overseeing the mechanical end of our program
since we moved forward in the middle of 2004,” concluded Baca.

FIDANZA SPONSORS TEAM TITAN/TITAN MOTORSPORTS FOR 2005 RACE SEASON;
Signs on for 3rd year with Orlando-based import performance shop
(12-2-2004) - For the third year in a row, Fidanza has
signed as a sponsor for Team Titan/Titan Motorsports as it prepares for
the 2005 race season.
"Sponsoring Team Titan is a great way to both exhibit the
horsepower-increasing benefits of our flywheels and other component parts
as well as promote our brand," said Bob Scheid, vice president, Fidanza.
"The team has achieved record-setting results and we enjoy working
closely with Titan in supplying products that help them continue to push
the performance envelope."
Titan Motorsports, an active Fidanza distributor, has found its home
state of Florida to be an excellent, growing market for Fidanza products.
Titan's racing team utilizes those same products in competition.
"Fidanza provides leading-edge race components and that's what counts
to our customers," said Nero Deliwala, owner Team Titan/Titan Motorsports.
"Fidanza's aluminum flywheels, cam gears and other products are not
only
high-quality and durable, but using these components provides improved
performance in track, tuner and street applications."
To promote the ongoing successful union, Team Titan/Titan Motorsports
will be unveiling their newest vehicle in the Fidanza booth (#P4633, Dome)
during the 2004 Performance Racing Industry (PRI) Show at 12 noon on Thursday,
December 9.
With the addition of this third vehicle, Team Titan/Titan Motorsports
becomes the largest sport compact team competing in recognized series
events.
"While I don't want to give away too many details before the unveiling,
I can say that our new car was built by RJ Race Cars with engine tuning
by Kenny Duttweiler of Duttweiler Performance," said Nero Deliwala,
owner Team Titan/Titan Motorsports. "The expertise and professional
caliber these two entities bring to the project make this a really exciting
event. The fact that it's taking place in the Fidanza booth - a supporter
who has been with us since the start of our race program - makes it even
more special."

NEW PRO MODIFIED RACING ASSOCIATION ESTABLISHED; Ontario-based drag
racing series prepares for 2005 season
(12-2-2004) – A new drag race series has been
established for 2005 featuring the popular and entertaining Pro Modified
cars, known as the “world’s fastest doorslammers.”
Under the direction of the Pro Modified Racing Association (PMRA), the
Ontario-based series will provide five events at several drag strips in
Ontario, Quebec, and New York.
With close to two dozen Pro Modified teams in Ontario and Western New
York, there was a need for these teams to compete on a regular basis in
front of their local fans. After meetings with several teams, a race format
was established with regulations, race dates, and purses. The PMRA is
also meeting with several recognized drag race groups such as the Can-Am
Stock/Super Stock Series with the possibility of presenting several divisions
at its events.
Event dates, details, and PMRA competitors will be presented in the near
future. A comprehensive and informative website will also be available
soon.

(12-1-2004) - If you particularly enjoed seeing Mike

you're a fan of Pro Street racing, you will get the best of both worlds
in 2005. Castellana and crewchief/teammate Shannon Jenkins are making
plans to run a few NMCA/PRO and NSCA events to help promote their Speedtech
Nitrous product line.
Castellana has already placed an order for mufflers and weight tabs.
Neither Castellana, nor Jenkins have ruled out the possibility of running
an AMS TLR Pro Modified event if they are afforded an invite.
IHRA Announces Major Reorganization; Polburn Names Three Vice Presidents
Promoted From Within the Company and Two New Team Members
(12-01-2004) - IHRA announced a major reorganization,
promoting three vice presidents from within the company and hiring two
new team members in the business development and operations departments.
IHRA President Aaron Polburn announced that Debra Sue Tobak was named
Vice President of Finance and Human Resources, Jim Marchyshyn named Vice
President of Marketing, and Skooter Peaco named Vice President of Competition.
In addition to the promotions, Matthias Czabok was hired as Vice President
of Business Development and Sharon Ramlow was hired as Operations Coordinator.
Tobak has been with IHRA for five years as Assistant General Manager
and Director of Finance. Her duties shift from on site management of everything
non competition related at national events to overseeing the day to day
operations at IHRA World Headquarters in Norwalk, Ohio.
Marchyshyn has been with IHRA for six years, serving first as Communications
and Public Relations Manager before being promoted to Director of Marketing.
Marchyshyn will direct all IHRA marketing, advertising and media programs.
Peaco has served as Director of Racing Operations with IHRA for a year.
As Vice President of the department, his responsibilities include overseeing
everything race and competition related. He will also be directly involved
with tracks to refine procedures and to create programs that will service
member tracks and racers more efficiently.
Matthias Czabok joins IHRA with more than a decade of experience in motorsports
marketing and sponsorship development. He founded his own sports marketing
agency, Movement Arts, in 1992, and has developed successful marketing
and sponsorship programs with CART, IRL, ASA, and NASCAR. Czabok’s
responsibilities for IHRA will include increasing revenue through new
and existing partnerships and improving current promotional and marketing
concepts.
Sharon Ramlow joins IHRA following five years as Operations Director
for IHRA Pro Modified driver Harold Martin and Martin Technologies. Ramlow
oversaw most operations of Martin’s organization. Ramlow’s
responsibilities for IHRA include overseeing ticket operations, banquet
coordination, staffing at events, and management of most on-site activities
at IHRA national events.
Polburn sees the reorganization and restructuring as necessary moves.
“For IHRA to move forward we had to put the people in place, and
give them the tools to do the job. By promoting three vice presidents
from within, we get the knowledge and stability of team members who are
a long time part of the IHRA family. By adding two new team members, we
get fresh thinking and focus that will help us with new opportunities.”
The reorganization was a restatement of focus for IHRA. “For IHRA
to achieve its long term goals, we have to think globally, develop business
and sponsorship partners that we haven’t thought of before. We have
the people it’s going to take to accomplish that. We have the team
in place that’s going to take IHRA to the next level.” IHRA
membership swelling to almost 20,000 and more than ninety sanctioned tracks
precipitated the moves. “We’ve put key people in place. With
membership increasing, with the number of sanctioned tracks increasing,
we had to restructure and add staff to handle the day to day operations
more efficiently. But more importantly, we’re looking forward, and
we’re excited about what IHRA will do.”
Former CompetitionPlus.com Senior Editor Will Hanna tabbed to drive
ATC Motorsports TAFC in '05
(12-1-2004) - Current Top Alcohol Dragster Crew Chief
and former CompetitionPlus.com Senior Editor Will Hanna has been selected
as the driver for Harry Clack's ATC Motorsports NHRA Top Alcohol Funny
Car in 2005. The car will feature the new Lencodrive Transmission and
the team will compete in NHRA's South Central Division (Division 4).
Hanna, who currently serves as Crew Chief on Jason Cannon's A/Fuel Dragster,
also runs the popular alcohol racing website InsideTopAlcohol.com. Prior
to working with Cannon, Hanna crewed for such names as Shelly Howard,
Lee Callaway and Jay Meyer among others. When not alcohol racing, Hanna
competes his Super Comp dragster at select bracket racing events and has
made license runs in both Top Alcohol Funny Car and Dragster. Recently,
Hanna graduated from the University of Houston-Clear Lake with a Bachelors
of Business Administration in General Business and served in the US Army
as a M1A2 Abrams Tank Driver prior to college.
"This is really a dream come true," said Hanna. "I saw
Harry post an ad on my site looking for a driver and figured I had nothing
to lose and sent him a resume'. It just went from there, and Harry's giving
me a shot. I've been blessed to work under a lot of smart people in all
aspects of drag racing; from driving, crewing, media, marketing and business,
and that's what has got me to this point. I'm just thrilled to get the
opportunity, and hope to make the most of it."
Clack, who owns and operates Advanced Transmission Center in Lafayette,
La., comes back to drag racing after a successful stint in APBA Offshore
Powerboat Racing, where he recently won the 2003 GMC National Championship
in the Outlaw II Category. Prior to his boating exploits, Clack was a
noted Comp Eliminator chassis builder in the early 90's and crewed for
current NHRA VP of Technical Administration and Legal Affairs Cary Menard
prior to that.
"We are very excited about our return to NHRA Drag Racing,"
stated Clack. "It was the discipline we acquired from this sport
that led to our success in Offshore Racing. Returning to the class that
I had always dreamed of running just makes coming back that much sweeter.
Having Will Hanna join us completes the team. His excitement and commitment
to this class and its future are what this team needs and we are happy
to have him on board."
Hanna cites that the team will start testing the new Lencodrive combination
heavily in January.
"Harry and I both share the attitude you don't need to race until
you can race," commented Hanna. "We're trying some new things
with this Lencodrive combination that we're pretty excited about. Obviously
we hope the learning curve is pretty quick and short, but we're also realistic.
There's a lot to sort out with a conventional combination, and I've got
a lot to learn as a driver. We should have the car ready to test by January
and start running the wheels off of it. We'll run some divisionals as
test sessions as well, but you won't see us on the national level until
we can run at least 5.70's."

The 23rd Annual Murray’s Mountain Dew Citrus Nationals - an Awesome
Weekend Filled with Power and Excitement
(11-29-2004) - Screaming into full gear, the Murray’s
Mountain Dew Citrus Nationals, presented by Miller’s Ale House Restaurants,
Roger Dean Chevrolet and the Gater 98.7fm, entertained a record-breaking
crowd at Moroso Motorsports Park on November 27-28th.
Top Alcohol Dragsters and 6-second Pro Mods highlighted the event with
200+mph runs. Jet Funny Cars, Jet Dragsters, the Original Jet Truck and
Kenny Nelson’s “Cool Bus’ Wheelstander thrilled the
audience. NHRA and ET racing classes included Super Gas, Super Street,
Super Comp, Super Pro, Pro, Pro Bike, Street Bike, Quick 16 and Jr. Dragsters.
It was a tremendous end to a South Florida Thanksgiving weekend.
On Saturday night, Mike Gunderson, of Middleburg, Florida, turned in
runs that set a new Top Alcohol Dragster record at the Moroso strip. Gunderson
went out in the first round after he smoked the tires with the Low E.T.
and Top Speed of the event. As the #1 qualifier and new-record holder,
Gunderson ran an E.T. of 5.219 and had a top speed of 274.22 mph.
Top Alcohol Dragsters turned an impressive performance with the win going
to Bruce Horner of Bergenfield, NJ, with a 5.774 @ 248 mph. Last year’s
winner of the TAD class returned to take Runner-Up. Bill Evans, Jr., from
Miramar, Florida, had a great pass but was taken at the tree with a .054
light to Horner’s .034.
Pro Mods were a returning class this year with a $5,000 winner’s
check going to Dale Brinsfield from Sophia, NC. Brinsfield is a driver
for former Pro Stock Champion, Roy Hill, of Roy Hill’s Drag Racing
School. Dale was able to defeat former World Champion Pat Musi, of Carteret,
NJ, with a run of 6.277 at 229.82mph compared to Musi’s 7.292 @
134.87mph.
The winner of Quick 16 2004 Series, with an overall total of 246 points,
is returning Champion Bill Empke of West Palm Beach, Florida. Empke is
the owner of Atlas Transmissions, located in Lake Worth, and has been
racing at Moroso since 1981.
After running everything from Super Pro to Pro Mod, Bill finds that the
Quick 16 class is the one that best suits him and finds support from his
wife Marie and three children.
Although Empke won the Championship, Frank Altilio, of Ocoee, took the
win with a winning pass of 7.340 at 179.21 mph. Altilio defeated local
racer, Bruce Liberman after he failed to hit his target dial-in by 0.166
against Frank Atilio’s .010 difference.
The Quick 16 class is made up of the fastest 16 qualified vehicles, including
Door Cars, Dragsters and Bikes. The Auto Craft Collision Quick 16 Series
will return in 2005.
The Best Appearing Crew award went to the team of Super Comp driver Johnny
Hollis of Miami, while the Best Appearing Car award was given to Frank
Taglieri, of Coral Springs, Florida, for his 1971 Corvette named “Wild
Cherry.”
Year after year, the Murray’s Mountain Dew Citrus Nationals is
one of the biggest events of the year and we can’t wait to do it
again in 2005.
IHRA Announces Increased Purses for Funny Car and Torco Race Fuels Pro
Stock in 2005
Funny Car Qualifying Field Restructured
(11-29-2004) - IHRA has announced increases in IHRA
Hooters Series national event purses for Funny Car and Torco Race Fuels
Pro Stock.
The increase in Funny Car’s purse comes with the restructuring
of the class’ qualifying field. In 2005, Funny Car will have an
eight car qualified field instead of 16.
“I’d like to deal with the restructured eight car field in
Funny Car head on,” stated IHRA President Aaron Polburn. “If
we had left the class alone as it was, it was going to die. This conclusion
wasn’t based on opinion, but on a five year, on-going study of the
class. Funny Car is too important a class in our effort to grow our business
to let it go away. We felt this was the best direction to go in for a
permanent solution, to help the class flourish.”
Polburn believes the upside will be seen immediately. “The move
also allowed us to reapportion part of the purse funds to bring the class
more in line to what’s appropriate and at the same time reduce the
expenses of getting a car into the championship round by eliminating a
round. This won’t decrease Funny Car exposure on Speed; it gives
us the opportunity to help promote the class and its great personalities.”
The 2005 Funny Car purse will pay out $10,000 to the winner; $5,000 to
the runner up; $2,000 for semi-finals; and $1,750 for quarter-finals.
The 2005 Torco Race Fuels Pro Stock purse will pay out $10,000 to the
winner; $5,000 to the runner up; $2,000 for semi-finals; $1,750 for quarter-finals;
and $1,500 for eighths.
The purse increases will move both categories closer to the Torco Race
Fuels Pro Modified purse. Both Torco Race Fuels Pro Modified and Top Fuel
categories will remain as they were in 2004.

NSCA Steps Up To Aid Stricken Racer
(11-27-2004) - National Street Car Association competitor
Joel O'Donnell, 33, has recently been diagnosed with sudden onset AML,
or Acute Mylogenous Leukemia. Since being diagnosed with this disease
he has undergone very intense treatments, including chemotherapy, radiation,
and even a bone marrow transplant. All of this his obviously taken a severe
toll on Joel as well as his family.
To date the young man’s medical bills have topped over 1.1 million
dollars and are climbing daily. His mother and father have had to put
their lives on hold in order to care for their son. Unfortunately, Joel’s
dad is also struggling with a medical condition that doesn't allow him
to work and now his mom can’t work simply because someone has to
remain full-time caretaker of Joel. On top of that, Joel will not be able
to return to work for at least one year.
In order to try and help Joel and his family through the tough days ahead,
the NSCA will be holding a benefit for the stricken racer during their
year-end Night of Champions banquet in Indianapolis on December 10, 2004
Fellow racers John and Marie Baio have organized the benefit, where attendees
can participate in silent auctions and raffles throughout the night in
order to help Joel and his family.
“Since this is a night to honor the NSCA Champions, John and I
thought that this would be a perfect time to do something for Joel as
well to help make him a Champion in his fight against his sickness,”
Marie Baio said. “Those who know Joel know that he is a very supportive,
kind, caring and compassionate racer and has always been there for any
of us when we have required help. This time it’s Joel that needs
the help and we’re hoping to give him and his family hope for the
future in some small way.
Anyone interested in participating with the donations or the raffles,
please feel free to contact Marie Baio at baiomotorsports@aol.com or baiomotorsports@yahoo.com.
Donations can also be made directly through Joel’s web site at:
www.joelodonnell.4T.com or
any Archer Bank facility in the Chicagoland area in the name of The Joel
O'Donnell Trust Fund.
Musi, Hill Pro Mod Favorites at 23rd Citrus Nationals
(11-27-2004) - Pat Musi and Roy Hill, a pair of drag
racing legends who for years battled one another on the NHRA and IHRA
Pro Stock circuits, renew their rivalry this week with the 23rd running
of the Murray's Mountain Dew Citrus Nationals at Moroso Motorsports Park,
presented by Miller’s Ale House and Roger Dean Chevrolet.
This time, though, the arena is not Pro Stock. It's Pro Modified, the
sport's most popular new category, and the two old rivals have taken very
dissimilar paths to the top.
Despite their very obvious differences, both cars have covered the standard
quarter mile course in fewer than 6.20 seconds at speeds exceeding 220
miles per hour, performance numbers that have established the two old
rivals as co-favorites in a Citrus Nationals event that also will crown
champions in Quick 16, Top Alcohol Dragster, the National Dragster Challenge
classes and in an expanded Jr. Dragster division featuring separate categories
for drivers 8-12 and 13-16.
Hill, who climbed out of the cockpit after winning 13 times on the IHRA
circuit and after earning a pair of runner-up finishes in NHRA Pro Stock
competition, has for the past several years concentrated on his driving
school business. When he returned to competition this year, he did so
with Stevens as his driver.
A four-time former NHRA Pro Stock tour winner, the 26-year-old Stevens
has had no trouble sliding into the seat of one of the sport's quickest
Pro Modifieds.
As for Musi, Pro Modified is just another challenge, another source of
clients for his engine-building business. Although this is only his second
season in the class, the veteran drove his Chevy to an IHRA Pro Mod victory
earlier this year at Epping, N.H. It was his fourth career victory on
the IHRA tour on which he was a Pro Stock contender almost 30 years ago.
His best Pro Stock season in the IHRA series was 1977 when he won twice,
was runner-up twice and finished second in world championship points behind
"General Lee" Edwards. An eight-time IHRA Pro Stock finalist,
Musi also was a runner-up on the NHRA tour at two races in 1981.
In the mid-80s, he turned his attention away from the national circuits
and toward the smaller muscle car series through which he was able to
greatly expand his engine-building business. He was the Pro Street class
champion in the National Muscle Car Association series in 1997 before
winning back-to-back-to-back Pro Street titles in the National Street
Car Association beginning in 2000. In 2002, in fact, he doubled-up, also
winning the PRO-Edlebrock Pro Street title in a 200 mile-an-hour street
car.
"Thirty years later and I'm still racing against Roy," Musi
said. "It should be interesting because our cars aren't anything
alike. We use totally different approaches."
In fact, when he won this year at Epping, Musi was just the second driver
in history to do so using a fuel-injected engine.
While the Musi and Hill battle will be one of the most interesting features
of the two-day Thanksgiving weekend event, the Citrus Nationals boasts
a spectacular "undercard" that includes Bob Motz and the "Original
Jet Truck," the "Miss-ta-Fire" and "Chariot of Fire"
jet-powered dragsters, the "Super Mario" and "Rock-n-Roll
Thunder" jet Funny Cars and the "Cool Bus" wheelstander.
Champions will be crowned in Super Pro, Pro, Pro Bike, Street Bike and
Quick 16 classes. Other classes competing include NHRA’s Super Gas,
Super Street and Super Comp. Top Alcohol Dragsters as well as Pro Mods
will compete for the top dollar purses of the event.

Gus Leighton Passes
(11-26-2004) - Robert "Gus" Leighton, one
of the original members of the Dust Devils Auto Club that operate California's
Inyokern Drag Strip, passed away Nov. 23 after a short illness. He was
76.
In the 1950s and '60s, Leighton teamed with former NHRA Division 7 Director
and Vice President of Field Operations Bernie Partridge on a modified
roadster, and later with Dennis Garrett on a Dragmaster B/Dragster that
carried the team to a Hot Rod Magazine Top 10 finish nationwide in 1960.
Leighton continued a race operation with his son, David, with stints
in Comp Eliminator, Super Comp and ET racing. Recently Leighton's grandchildren,
Jared and Katie Leighton, have been wheeling the Desert Express dragsters.
Leighton also served as a national event worker through the 1970s and
as the track manager at Inyokern throughout its 50th season this year,
and was looking forward the opening of the track's 51st season next week.

IHRA UNVEILS “BEST OF BOTH WORLDS” EVENTS FOR SPORTSMAN
RACERS
(11-25-2004) - IHRA has announced the creation of a
new “Best of Both Worlds” program, aimed at making competing
for the Hooters Series National Championship easier for sportsman racers.
This new program gives sportsman racers competing at select Mr. Gasket
Pro-Am events the ability to gain both Mr. Gasket Pro-Am points and Hooters
National event points at the same event.
“It’ll be like racing at two events for the cost of one,
making it ‘the Best of Both Worlds,’” said IHRA Director
of Racing Operations Skooter Peaco. “A lot of sportsman racers that
I’ve talked with or raced with over the last few years have continually
said that they have had trouble getting in their last few national event
claims to compete for the national championship because of travel distance,
cost, or time off work. I sat down with Tom Kreager, Director of Track
Development and Services and Mike Baker, Director of Competition and Technical
Services to come up with a creative way to offer more opportunities to
sportsman who want to chase a national championship.”
Peaco sees it as a way of taking some of the burden off of sportsman
racers. “If you want to compete for the championship, or finish
in the top ten in the world, then you have to make both a time and money
commitment to the series. This is one way that we can help sportsman racers
get the most out of the commitment and sacrifice they make to this sport.
The approach is different than a sportsman national event because their
score will reflect running two events for the cost and the wear and tear
on the equipment of one event.”
Peaco stated, “We are going to target admission fees and payout
to be that of a Mr. Gasket Pro-Am event for 2005. We are working on an
increased contingency package for these special events, but it’s
too soon to announce anything. We are not going to get too wild with the
format during the first year because the host tracks need to see what
the potential of these events are. We want to start to build a foundation
this year, then move these forward with the support of the racers, sponsors
and the host tracks.”
Three sites are confirmed, with two more in the development stage. The
tracks are located in regions where it is difficult for racers to attend
enough national events to compete for a World Championship. Confirmed
events are Tulsa Raceway Park, July 1-3; San Antonio Raceway, August 5-7;
and Cordova Dragway Park, May 13-15.
Peaco is hoping the idea gains momentum among sportsman racers. “I
hope to lock up at least two more locations in a different region within
the next few weeks. If the sportsman like this idea and support the events,
then we will continue to run them where it makes the most sense,”
said Peaco.
Event information will be released on www.ihra.com
and in Drag Review as it becomes available.

IHRA Reduces Funny Car Field to Eight for 2005
(11-24-2004) - In a letter sent to all Funny Car competitors
dated November 17, 2004, IHRA Director of Racing Operations Skooter Peaco
outlined the organization's plan to reduce qualified fields from 16 to
eight, beginning with the 2005 season.
In addition, he also revealed a revamped payout structure for class competitors.
Following is the letter in its entirety:
To: All Funny Car Competitors
Re: 2005 Funny Car Qualifying Format
Dear Competitors:
The competition department has completed a review of the Funny Car category
for the 2004 season and I wanted to communicate the details of our analysis
with the competitors involved in the category first, prior to any information
being made public. The two biggest items that caught our attention this
season was the amount of black flag downtime and the number of participating
teams.
Black Flag Downtime
For those of you in attendance at the Funny Car meeting at the Spring
Rockingham event that I hosted, we addressed the downtime issue face to
face. I'm happy to say that the people in that room made the difference
in this category, substantially reducing the black flag downtime versus
the 2003 season. After Rockingham, there was a substantial improvement.
Congratulations to all for being proactive! As excited as I am about the
improvement, there is still more work to be done. This category is still
second only to Top Fuel in black Flag downtime, which we MUST work at
improving. Now that the class as a whole has improved, it allows IHRA
to take corrective measures with individual drivers that consistently
cause black flag downtime. Please think about ways to improve this issue
during your off-season planning.
Participation
We have been monitoring a decrease in participation over the last 5 years.
In 2000, the average car count was 27. Then in 2001, it slipped to 21.
In 2002 it was 20 and held at 20 for 2003. This season it slipped again
to 17. San Antonio was the worst attended event at 7 cars and the finals
at Rockingham was the best with 23 cars. Four of the twelve (or 1/3rd)
of the National events did not have a full field of 16 cars. We have to
take action on this issue before the problem gets worse. Running a limited
schedule was an option, but not if we want to maintain a true National
points champion. There is nothing that would indicate that the trend is
going to reverse itself next season, as costs continue to increase in
every category.
The decision was made to contest an 8 car qualified field in 2005, with
an increased payout. The new purse format is as follows:
Winner - $10,000
Runner-up - $5,000
Semi’s - $2,000
Quarters - $1,750
Please don't misread this decision as an indication that we are giving
up on the class or moving to make everything an 8 car show. We are simply
making an adjustment in the format now, before it's too late. Our hopes
are that this move will enable a solid group of competitors to compete
for the championship, while promising the fans a show we can deliver.
We also realize that it will be tougher for some teams to qualify and
in all reality may actually increase downtime as teams push their combinations.
It is also a reality that some teams may simply not be able to compete
under this new format or will only be able to run a limited schedule,
which seems to be the current trend. It is our intention to monitor the
progress of the class under the new format and make any necessary adjustments
that will ensure the continuation of the Funny Car category in IHRA National
event competition.
The payout for Pro Stock will be increased for 2005 to be identical through
the quarter finals. Pro Stock and Funny Car will have a purse that is
extremely close to what Pro Modified is currently paid. Both Pro Stock
and Pro Mod will remain 16 car fields, while Top Fuel and Funny Car will
be the 8 car fields. There is no DNQ money for Funny Car, but it will
remain a part of the Top Fuel program.
I realize that no one reading this letter will be especially pleased
to see an 8 car field. My only hope is that you will understand why this
decision had to be made now, rather than taking a chance on having a bigger
problem later.
Best Regards,
Skooter Peaco
