Put Injected Nitro in IHRA Top Fuel?

I agree that A/Fuelers like Michael Gunderson's Under The Gun and the Bartone Brothers could win on the IHRA trail. Given a slick track in the heat of the day the A/Fueler with less power could pull an upset over Millican or Litton.

Below is the top half of the Alcohol dragster field at Pomona compared to the Top Fuel field at Buds Creek. Any of the injected nitro cars could have made the show.

I enjoy your site and thought for some time the Bartone's of the world could compete in IHRA and have brought up the subject at Bristol Dragway where I work a second job. I work the Div 2 event in the water box and can tell you the A/Fuelers are a show at night and they are a nitro car for sure.

I have been a fan of injected nitro burners since the days of Junior Fuel and believe the proposed step allowing the A/FD cars to compete in Top Fuel is the right step.Allow a multi stage clutch, no nitro limit and adjust the weight of the A/FD to fine tune the combination with an agreed capacity limit then look out. I think they are the most underated drag race machines on the planet. - Honeybob@bigpond.com

If Bader is a good business man, he is aware of the performance of the A-Fuel cars and the potential they have with clutch management and less weight. IHRA has received many emails from A-Fuel owners on this subject as well.

I agree with you that it would make for an interesting situation and there might be a lot of A-Fuel owners willing to make the necessary changes to increase their performance in the IHRA arena.

Probably won't happeen but lets keep trying. - Bob Holley

I can't speak for all A/Fooler teams, but I've talked to teams who have thought about the different ways to run our cars. Whether you know or not, in 1999, 5 A/Fooler cars ran at Norwalk for no charge. I asked IHRA if I could run with Top Fuel. The answer of course was no, even though there was no real reason. Around that time, the A/Fuel deal was just starting to come around. It was right on the verge of breaking or surviving. As we see now, we've survived, but without change, money, and controversy every year. Just the thought of 500 cubes at 2000 pounds, straight can and clutch management makes me drool. Like Pro Mod, good controversy has helped the interest in the class. We could provide that also, but it comes with nitro. - Dave Hirata

Read your editorial and I agree. I am an IHRA fan (Canadian) and would love to see it. However; the idea of Fuel Altereds is one I particularly enjoy and one that IHRA has thought about and tried at Grand Bend Motorplex. It was great! - Bob Mencel

A/Fuel with clutch management is a great idea. The noise, flames smoke and
racing are the show and that is the whole idea to put on a good show. I
would also think that an A/Fuel Altered (open wheel center steer) class with
50% and current IHRA alcohol funny car motor/blower/tire rules would be a
homerun also! - Jim Croyle

Ooooops, We Goofed

In the story by Bobby Bennett, Jr

"Once a Warren Johnson crewman, Anderson becomes the first driver to ever
have worked under the "Professor" to win a World Championship."

Gary Stinnett worked for WJ and won a NHRA S/C World Championship, (and
almost did it again in '03)- Donnie Durenberger

Let the record reflect that Greg Anderson is the only "Pro Stock" driver to have worked under Warren Johnson and won a championship. We stand corrected Donnie, thanks for the tip. - Editor

Whats Going On With Tony P?

Hello. First off, great website...enjoy being updated on all the goings-on in NHRA in the offseason. Congrats to Tony Pedregon and also Cruz for bringing Quaker State back into the Funny Car wars.Just wanted to ask about Frank Pedregon where does he fit in this equation? Another team in the works for Frank? Keep up the good work. - Tom Wright.

Tom, we made a few calls and your answers are in our cover story. - Editor.

We Have Gained A Fan

One web page with the interview with Dean Skuza, another with Cory Mac, and the article on the new Shelby. And there is even more where that came from! Good stuff, keep it up.

Bring on 32 Fuelers

WOW! Like the good old days.

If you can find the payout money.... 1/3 to 1/2 the races running 32-cars fields would force the tracks to double the ticket window. Increase seating... and make more room for press and ESPN (who wold raise advertisings dollars). I can't find the bad side. - Ed Davis

Roger Gets Props

I just wanted to give Roger some atta boys for the photos on your site. His flame shots in Part I are just spectacular!!!! As you know I’m a camera buff and these shots are just out of this world good!! There are three of them that I keep rotating on my desk top because I just can’t pick which one is the best. I think it’s the Cruz shot. Give Roger one of those new Cannon 6.3 Megapixel digital cameras with the interchangeable lenses and you will dominate drag racing photography because your photos will print as posters.

I love what you are doing with you site, please keep it up. - Paul Fink

Thanks Paul, we love Roger's Photography too. - Editor
