Nostalgia Super Stockers at Beaver Springs

On Sunday, July 11 th at Pennsylvania 's Beaver Springs Dragway, there was a Nostalgia Super Stock show held as part of the big York U.S. 30 Reunion.

Dubbed the York U.S. 30 Nostalgia Super Stock Nationals, it was a great show that featured some of the very best cars of the type in hard-fought competition. The first session of time trials saw 27 Nostalgia Super Stock cars make the call to the line, and the second session was even more impressive, with no les than 34 historic hot rods lining up in the staging lanes. Famous Hemis, Max Wedges, Ford Cammers and wedges, Pontiacs , Chevrolets and even Ramblers were in competition.

“Pete's Patriot” AMX was on hand with its original driver, Lou Downing, at the wheel. Tom Orlando's “Mr. 5 & 50” car was there also. The Pennsylvania-based 422 Motorsports Ford team made an all-out effort as well. The field was definitely MOPAR heavy, however, and drivers of the Ford, GM, and AMC cars all had their work cut out for them.

After battling their way through the first three rounds of eliminations, the fourth round winners were Gary Richmond in his '66 Ford Fairlane, Dennis Stabile and his “Dennis the Menace” ‘64 Dodge, and Lou Downing in the “Pete's Patriot” AMX.

The semifinal round saw Downing run 11.41, 128 to defeat Stabile, who wasted a 10.74, 96.87 effort when he left too soon. Richmond paced his FE-powered Fairlane to a solo pass mark of 11.99, 87.32 mph.

The big final round win went to Richmond as his big Ford outran Downing's AMX.

There was a few exhibition runs during the day as well. Harvey Richards took “Miss Mighty MOPAR”, Judy Lilly, on a pass in his “Damn Yankee” ‘64 Dodge. This was the first time that Judy has been in a race car for many years. Hayden Proffit was also on hand and he was given a ride in the “Wolly Bully” 409 Chevrolet. Hayden was like a kid in a candy store after that ride!

Many other Legends of drag racing were also on hand for the show. George Weiler, Bud Faubel, Darwin Doll, Bruce Larson, Dick Brannan, Ohio George Montgomery, Bob Harrop, and Ken Montgomery were all in attendance for the show!

We had a great day at the track and I would like to thank “Beaver” Bob McCardle for his hospitality!
