NSCA Corteco Motor City Nationals Dodges a Wet Bullet
Photos by Brian Wood and Richard Long

Once again the good karma enjoyed by the National Street Car Association so far this season paid off in spades as the 1 st annual Corteco Motor City Nationals was run in its entirety the weekend of June 12-13 despite threats of severe storms and tornados.

It did in fact rain on Saturday morning, but the skies cleared just in time to allow the Milan Dragway crew to dry the track and allow the race to proceed. Halfway through the winner's circle photo session, the skies opened up again, but by then the race was in the books.

The event, the fourth on the eight-race Corteco Gaskets NSCA Drag Racing Series presented by BFGoodrich schedule for 2004, was deemed a success by all concerned.

There were a lot of first-time winners and numerous performance records set over the course of the two days, much to the delight of appreciative Michigan drag racing fans.

Here's a quick rundown of the new marks set: In Comp Cams/TCI Engineering Pro Street , Tony Christian not only won the race, but he also set a new elapsed time record of 6.655.

In Edelbrock Pro Outlaw, four-time champion Marc Dantoni picked up right where he left off in quest of championship No. 5, debuting his beautiful new '41 Willys in grand style, winning the event and resetting both the elapsed time and speed records at 6.562, 213.38.

One of the two newest classes in NSCA competition is Pro-Filer Performance Products Top Street, and Jerry Albert took home the win and new class speed record with a great 198.07 mph blast.

In ProCharger Super Street , the latest “shoe” for Tony Bischoff's hot Olds Achieva is Kenny Bennett, and the young man put on another great show, running a record 7.267, 198.07 on his way to the winner's circle.

Another wild class of competition in NSCA is BFGoodrich Drag Radial Eliminator, and drivers in the class continue to amaze as they run unbelievable numbers. This time around, Jim Filipowski marked his return to the asphalt wars with a new turbo-through-carburetor-powered late-model Camaro which ripped off a great mile-per-hour of 171.72.

Among the first-time winners were Chicago 's John Baio, who drove “Thumper,” his orange first-generation Camaro to victory in Drive Train Specialists Super Modified competition, and Joe Cochran, who paced his colorful AMX to Mr. Gasket Nostalgia Super Stock glory. Newcomer Roxanne Shepard rolled to her first NSCA win as well, wheeling her Mustang to victory lane in Comp/FA.S.T. EFI Eliminator action.
