(6-9-2004) - When asked about using exotic metals in his Pro Stock engines, NHRA Champion Greg Anderson joked and explained that they had their spaceship fueled and ready to go to the moon. Evidently, someone took him serious in the NHRA technical department and handed down some rule changes for Pro Stock. Funny Car was also given new rules amendments as well.
The rule amendments listed are effective immediately.
Pro Stock Engines:
"All large and all moving engine components (valve
covers, intake manifolds, headers, heads, blocks, etc.) are
restricted to aluminum, steel, iron, titanium, magnesium, or
other conventional alloys. Carbon fiber, Kevlar, ceramics, composites,
beryllium, or other exotic materials are prohibited."
Minimum weight requirements have been developed
for the following engine components:
Piston - 460 grams
Wrist pin - 135 grams
Connecting rod - 480 grams
Intake valve - 90 grams
Exhaust valve - 80 grams
"Material for intake and exhaust pushrod, and valve springs are limited to steel. All other materials prohibited. Roller bearings limited to cam bearings, cam thrust bearings, rocker arm fulcrum, and valve spring tip. Conventional sleeve rod and main bearing mandatory."
Funny Car spoiler:
Many of today's Funny Cars have the ability to adjust the
center plane of the spoiler surface vertically to allow for
more/or less air to exit the spoiler area. Many teams utilize
this action to help defer or add downforce to the rear of the
car. The following wording is an amendment to the 2004 NHRA
Rulebook:
Spoilers
"Spoiler surface, front and rear, must be a continuous
single-curved plane. Any lips, notches, decks, or steps prohibited
in the spoiler surface, except for wickers, as currently allowed."
Spillplates
"Spillplates must consist of vertical planes running
parallel to the car. A maximum of two additional supports (ribs
or plates) will be allowed anywhere between the spillplates,
as long as they are in the vertical plane, running parallel
to the spill plates."

(6-9-2004) - On the eve of this weekend's Pontiac Excitement Nationals presented by Summit Racing, there is exciting news from Star Racing/G Squared Motorsports. The long-awaited debut of the G Squared/S&S Buell, powered by an S&S V-Twin, will take place this weekend on the National Trail Raceway quarter-mile with Fred Collis, who currently handles the driving duties on the Star Racing Suzuki, moving to the new bike .
"We tested the G Squared/S&S Buell after the last bike race in Chicago and felt that the numbers (times and speeds) run in that test session, which were comparable to the Suzuki, dictated that we move the V-Twin-powered bike to actual competition," said George Bryce, who along with George Smith, part owner of S&S Cycle, Incorporated, are partners in G Squared Motorsports. "
In 2003, Smith approached Bryce about going NHRA Pro Stock Bike racing with an S&S-powered V-Twin and the pair formed G Squared Motorsports to develop motorcycle engines and bikes.
"We knew that if we combined the talent and knowledge of Star Racing and S&S Cycle we could develop a competitive bike," said Bryce. "Our debut at Columbus is another step in the development phase and another step toward regaining the NHRA championship."
But the news doesn't stop there. The Star Racing/G Squared Motorsports Suzuki will also be in action with Matt Smith, son of veteran Pro Stock car driver "Tricky" Rickie Smith, aboard one of the most coveted rides on the NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle circuit for Columbus.
"It's the first time we will have a two-bike team in quite a while. Matt Smith is a good racer. He's the same weight as Fred and although he hasn't shown his potential yet in NHRA racing, he has won in a number of other forms of motorcycle racing and, with the right equipment, can do the same here," noted Bryce.
"Matt Smith's goal has always been to have a chance to show what he can do and one of his sponsors Red Line Oil is coming along with him to give him that chance. We welcome Red Line Oil and Matt Smith on board for Columbus. Hopefully, it will be the start of a great career for the young driver."
"Everybody on this team is excited about Columbus. Fred (Collis) won here last year but this is a whole new ball game. We've always done well on this track and hope our track record here will enable us to put on a good show for the fans," added Bryce.
Collis feels the debut race will go as planned. "Our testing has given us some good numbers that popped up on the board and George Bryce and George Smith feels there's no sense in wasting anymore time. The new G Squared/S&S Buell had comparable numbers to the Suzuki. We've got the power, so it's just a matter of getting the tuning just right to get the elapsed times we're looking for. We should be okay," said Collis.
"The V-Twin market, both in the stands and throughout the reach of drag racing, is way bigger than most people realize. We are definitely excited that we can bring something new for the fans and hopefully we can give them a good show."
Even though he is the son of a well-known Pro Stock car driver, Matt Smith opted for racing the two-wheeled variety. "It was the best way to go financially," said Smith. Now Smith has a new opportunity.
"I'm very excited about the opportunity to ride the Star Racing Suzuki," added the thirty-one-year-old Smith. "I think it could be a good deal for both of us. George Bryce has produced championship riders since the late 80s and if all goes well, I hope to add my name to that list in the future.
"At Columbus, I just plan to do my job and
learn from the top teacher in the business. I know I'm in good
hands with George. I want to thank both Star Racing and Red
Line Oil for giving me this opportunity."

(6-7-2004) - It’s been nearly two years
since veteran IHRA Funny Car driver Paul Zgoda’s horrific
transmission explosion during qualifying at the ACDelco Canadian
Nationals in Cayuga, Ontario Canada.
The transmission explosion caused serious injuries to Zgoda’s left foot and leg. His left ankle was broken is several places and an artery severed. He also suffered compound fractures of his toes and required skins grafts on his foot.
“I’ve had some mishaps in race cars before. There was an incident with a submarine strap years ago that I’d rather not get into, but this was the worst,” said Zgoda.
“I’d like to thank my wife and kids for putting up with me while I was laid up. I would also like to thank all of the people who sent their best wishes during that time, but now I’m ready to get back behind the wheel.”
The 5th annual Mopar Canadian Nationals at Grand Bend Motorplex will not only mark Zgoda’s return to IHRA competition, but it will also be his first time behind the wheel of his flopper since August of 2002. Paul’s son Chris, who serves as lead mechanic for the team, is anxious to see the Z-Man behind the wheel once again. “My dad has been racing all of my life, and most of his. I can’t remember a time when he wasn’t racing, and this time off was hard on him. I’ll be really happy when we’re coming back up the return road after the first pass.”

(6-6-2004) - Drivers from the GM Racing program will be making their annual stop at the Columbus Children's Hospital Thursday, June 10.
Signing autographs and visiting with the kids and their families will be Mark Pawuk, Jim Yates, Jeg Coughlin Jr., Del Worsham, Cory McClenathan, Bruce Allen and Phil Burkart. Pawuk's Summit Racing Pontiac Grand Am will also be on display at the outpatient entrance to the hospital letting the kids get an up close view of an NHRA Pro Stock car. All of the children will receive a gift bag provided by Pontiac and Summit Racing.
"We always look forward to visiting central Ohio for the Pontiac Excitement Nationals and the kids at Columbus Children's Hospital," said Fred Simmonds, GM Group Manager of Drag Racing. "The drivers are just great with the kids and every year they ask, 'when are we going to Children's Hospital?' They really enjoy seeing the kids, their families and the staff, and it's something we will continue to do in the future. Over the years we've made some good friends there, and this has become a special part of our race weekend and our race season. We hope that everyone at Children's Hospital enjoys the visit as much as we do."
The Columbus Children's Hospital is one of the
nation's pediatric leaders with more than 300 licensed inpatient
beds and approximately 11,000 patient admissions each year.
Critically ill children are cared for in Children's Hospital's
45-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and more than 30-bed Pediatric
Intensive Care Unit. The hospital's areas of specialty include
surgery, cancer, AIDS, burn treatment, rehabilitation, and dialysis.
The campus includes a $20 million Children's Research Institute
housed in a six-story facility dedicated to the study and treatment
of children's diseases. More than 500,000 patient visits are
handled each year through the hospital's wide variety of programs
and services.
Opening in May of 2004 is the new 160,000 square foot, five-story research building that will house 48 state-of-the-art laboratory modules. When combined with existing modules, the Children's Research Institute will have nearly 100 laboratories in operation.
Since the 1999 Pontiac Excitement Nationals, GM Racers have made their annual visit to the Columbus Children's Hospital. In addition, the Central Ohio Pontiac dealers will raise money for the hospital by raffling a Simpson Racing helmet signed by 43 NHRA drivers and former champions.
The 40th annual Pontiac Excitement Nationals presented by Summit Racing at National Trail Raceway runs June 10-13 in Hebron, Ohio. It is the 10th race on the 23-event NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.

(6-4-2004) – SEMA, the Specialty Equipment Market Association, wants to honor its founding fathers and the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum is offering the vehicle to do it. Literally.
SEMA and the Parks Museum today have announced that the Diamond Bar, Calif.-based trade association is supporting the rebuild of a 1954 Dodge station wagon as an exact copy of the original NHRA Safety Safari vehicle. A crew of four intrepid Hot Rod magazine and NHRA promoters drove it across the country 50 years ago, spreading the word on drag racing safety to local car clubs, skeptical civic leaders and police.
The vehicle will make its debut in Indianapolis at the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Nationals – honoring the first NHRA national event – Wed.-Mon., Sept. 1-6, 2004. For SEMA and the Parks Museum, the vehicle represents the beginnings of drag racing as a national sport. The Safari's efforts contributed greatly to the rapid and dynamic growth of the performance aftermarket.
Back in 1954, former Pomona police chief E.J.
"Bud" Koons led the Safety Safari team (Bud Evans,
Chick Cannon and Hot Rod magazine photographer Eric Rickman)
on an historic journey that helped legitimize the sport. Together
they blazed a trail, crisscrossing the nation with timing devices,
measuring equipment, car classification and inspection gear,
along with perhaps the most important ingredients of all, optimism
and hope. They were armed with
basic safety regulations, rules and the ability to perform technical
inspections in the field, and they were able to expand on these
as they went along, making racing safer in the long term and
from race to race.
They left a lasting legacy of safety and a rock-solid foundation not only for drag racing, but also for the pioneer speed equipment manufacturers who would eventually organize SEMA in 1963.
Mission accomplished!
"Thanks to the Safety Safari, drag racing, the NHRA and the performance aftermarket blossomed," said Sam Jackson, executive director of the Parks Museum. "We owe these guys a great deal of gratitude. Thanks to SEMA, we can honor them and tell the story of their accomplishment with this vehicle."
Speaking at a recent reunion of the original Safety
Safari, Wally Parks, founder of the NHRA and then editor of
Hot Rod, said: "Our primary goal was to legitimize the
racing that was already occurring on city streets and back roads.
Communications in those days were primitive, but we managed
to reach a lot of folks through Hot Rod and by constantly corresponding
by mail
and telephone as the Safari progressed. Thanks to this great
team, we reached many of our goals much faster than I initially
thought possible."
Chris Kersting, SEMA president and CEO agreed.
"Back in the early 1950s, drag racing and its supporting
industry were growing rapidly and needed to show the country,
especially local law enforcement agencies, that the sport could
thrive with well-organized events following solid safety rules
and regulations. The NHRA's Safety Safari, along with SEMA pioneers
such as
Edelbrock, Holley, Iskenderian, Weiand and a host of others,
helped an entire sport and industry develop and prosper. We're
proud to be saluting our origins with this historic vehicle."

(6-2-2004) - There’s an old saying that goes “be careful what you wish for,” and in the case of Marc Dantoni’s competition in the National Street Car Association, this may soon become a phrase that they hear all too much.
When it became known that four-time NSCA Pro Outlaw Champion Dantoni was putting his dominating ’68 Camaro up for sale in order to concentrate on his Pro Mod program, some of his competitors in the class went on record that they really hated to see him leave, as winning a title without having to go head-to-head with the “top dog” just wouldn’t be the same.
Well, with five races still remaining on the 2004 schedule, Dantoni has indeed sold the Camaro, but his fellow racers need not worry about taking an easy but meaningless road to the championship, because there’s no way the tough guy from New York City is going to just hand over his crown!
Not when he has a beautiful new hot rod in the shop that will move right in and take over where the Camaro left off, he won’t.
Dantoni’s Tommy Mauney-built ’41 Willys coupe will be campaigned in Pro Mod this year, as planned, and with the addition of 150 pounds or so, it’ll also fill the Pro Outlaw role perfectly. Combined with something he “found” at the last NSCA event in Maryland, the new car promises to be everything its predecessor was and more.
“We stumbled onto something with the Camaro that I’ve been working on for quite a while when we were at Cecil County,” Dantoni said. “It gave us a lot of headaches, with the car shaking the tires a lot, but we finally got it squared away. We’re going to move everything we learned directly over to the Willys now and go from there. This car should be a strong runner, and we don’t plan to skip a beat this season – we want that fifth Pro Outlaw championship, and we’re going after it all the way.”
So there you have it, and to all the guys that bemoaned
the fact that winning a championship just wouldn’t be the
same without having to beat Marc Dantoni, well, just remember
– always, always be careful what you wish for.
(6-2-2004) – NHRA Pro Stock
race team owner and driver, Barry Grant has announced that his
racing team is regrouping and will miss the next few events. “We’ve
not performed as expected,” said Grant “ and we’ve
decided to make some changes in an attempt to raise our game.”
Engine builder, Frank Iaconio has done a fine job for the team,
as evidenced by Mike Edwards’ recent performances, but an
opportunity to establish a new engine shop in Charlotte, NC, arose,
and the team wished to take full advantage of it. Grant, sponsor
of the NHRA King Demon Crown said, “We’ll be making
further announcements regarding the personnel to staff the new
facility.” Buddy Ingersoll, Rich Purdy, Chuck Williams and
Mike Earle will be unaffected by the changes. “They do a
great job,” remarked Grant, “and I appreciate their
efforts.”

(6-2-2004) – Two-time defending NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon will participate in Players Run, a seven-day, cross country car rally that begins in Manhattan and ends in Los Angeles. Players Run will benefit The Children’s Miracle Network.
The 2004 Players Run kicks off in New York City on Saturday, June 5 and will take 75 teams on a nationwide journey through 12 states and Canada before ending in Los Angeles on Saturday, June 12. During the week-long adventure, the teams will caravan across the highways of America, along with seeing time on various race tracks, including Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and participate in other activities.
“I think this is going to be a really fun deal,” Dixon said. “If you go playersrun.com, you can see why I would want to be involved, and to top it off, it’s for a good cause. Through my association with Bonspeed, I met the people staging the Players Run and they invited me to go along for a few days and I’m looking forward to it.”
Participation in the Players Run is by invitation only, and actor Stephen Baldwin, actress Michelle Rodriguez, soccer star Cobi Jones, ‘All My Children’ star Jacob Young, ‘Dukes of Hazzard’ actor John Schneider, and supermodel Kara Monaco will be among the celebrities participating in the second Players Run. The participants will pilot exotic vehicles ranging from the posh Mercedes Benz Maybach to the glamorous Ferrari Enzo.
“Larry (Dixon) is arguably the best Top Fuel driver in the world,” said Troy Hanson, vice president of media and special events for World Media. “Winning one championship is one thing, but winning back-to-back titles is something truly amazing. All the celebrities that have been chosen are automotive enthusiasts, people that love cars. Larry has all the goods and fits the mold of what we’re trying to portray with the Players Run. He’s young, hip, into rock-and-roll and is a car guy.”
Dixon, who will be partnered with current Indy Racing
League driver Arie Luyendyk Jr., will compete in the first two
legs of Players Run from New York to Kansas City, before competing
at the 40th running of the Pontiac Excitement Nationals in Columbus,
Ohio June 10-13.

(6-2-2004) - VP Racing today announced the introduction of “Lane Choice 6,” a revolutionary new traction compound that, according to Steve Burns, VP’s Director of Research & Development, “is track-proven to be the safest, best performing traction compound for drag racing on the market.”
“LC6 offers more consistent performance over a wider range of track temperatures than any other available product,” Burns asserted. “There can be big variations in track temperatures on the same day, especially during the spring and fall part of the season. We worked very closely with several tracks last year and tests showed track surfaces change very little with LC6 from hot days to cool nights – from 38° track temperature all the way to 150° F – and LC6 won’t be affected by humidity.”
“The higher viscosity of LC6 makes it much tougher than other compounds,” Burns continued, “and its chemical make-up allows it to bond better with tire rubber as well as adhere better to all track surfaces—especially concrete. Bracket racers--the backbone of local track competition--will benefit from LC6 because their track times will vary little from daytime qualifications to nighttime finals.”
“Out-of-groove performance with LC6 is substantially better than any other traction compound because it’s not dependent on having a groove of tire rubber laid down,” Burns pointed out. “This should yield a big safety dividend. LC6 can even be applied effectively to a brand new track with virgin concrete and performance will still be consistently good and safe. One thing tracks have told me is they’re able to open a few weeks earlier now and stay open later in the season because they know the traction will be good and racers will be safe.”
“With traction compound,” Burns explained, “you have three basic objectives – safety, in terms of out-of-groove performance; performance, in terms of elevating the speed of the race car; and consistency, in terms of minimizing variations in performance levels across a wide range of temperatures. Most traction compounds on the market have had to compromise on one of these objectives to maximize delivery of the others. Like with fuel, you sometimes might have to sacrifice octane for burning speed. With LC6, we made no compromises. Our chemical technology has allowed us to deliver optimum safety, performance and consistency, performing better across the board than anything on the market.”
“I’ve been involved in developing several other traction compounds and, of course, many different fuels,” Burns said. “I’d have to say we’ve incorporated more technology in LC6 than any product we’ve ever made. Racers should know LC6 has been engineered with the same precision that’s made VP fuels the choice of racing pros worldwide.”
The Official Racing Fuel of NHRA Championship Drag Racing, VP Racing has been making the best fuels and performance products for motorsports since 1975. VP's fuels have earned a reputation for superior power and consistency – as illustrated by the NHRA Pro Stock champions who have made VP their fuel of choice for 28 consecutive years, a record unmatched by any major sponsor in the industry. VP is also a sponsor and/or fuel of choice among champions in IHRA, NMRA, NSCA, PRO Hot Rod & Muscle Car, Prostar AMA and many other series.
In addition to fuels and traction compounds, VP’s product line includes synthetic oils, 2-cycle lubricants and performance chemcials – each designed to produce the most power and best performance in their respective racing applications. More information can be obtained from VP’s website – vpracingfuels.com

• Remember, if you have a story lead or news that you would like to share with us, or even some good old-fashioned gossip, drop us a line at rumors@competitionplus.com.
• Billy Glidden (or so they claim to be) has informed everybody on the Fun Ford Weekend message board, that his dad, Bob Glidden, has been fired by the Larry Morgan team. According to Billy, the Morgans "don't want to work so hard and want to have more fun". Interesting...but this is message board banter. We'll have more on this soon. ** UPDATE ** - We have just heard from a very reliable source that Bob Glidden has indeed been released by Larry Morgan...and immediately hired by the Jeg's Pro Stock team! Stay tuned for more details as they become available.
• Here's something to ponder. Could the reason that Gene Wilson has been sitting back and not accepting any driving gigs have something to do with a future relationship with Warren Johnson? That's what we've heard. Reportedly, they are trying to distance themselves from Wilson's Mopar involvement until the time Johnson reportedly plans to hang up the driving suit. Word has it that Wilson is already under contract with WJ. We'll see how this one plays out.
• Sources indicate that a new drag strip could be forthcoming in close proximity to Charlotte Motor Speedway. Oldtimers will recall that the IHRA once hosted a national event at Charlotte Motor Speedway in the Seventies. Word has it that officials got approval for an adjoining racetrack.
• Just as Indianapolis has become the Mecca for fuel teams, a trend seems to be developing that will be bringing more and more NHRA Pro Stock teams to Charlotte, NC. The reason? Nextel Cup engine development is the lure. We're hearing of at least one team that will be relocating for that very reason. Could Dale Earnhart Enterprises soon influence drag racing or a return of Jack Roush? Sit back and watch this one play out.
• Sources indicate that Don Lampus will be among the Top Fuel competition at this weekend's NHRA Pontiac Excitement Nationals in Columbus, Ohio.
• Word has it that the Pedregon Brothers could be supported on a one-race promotion by rock and roll legend Carlos Santanna. On other one race deals, look for Jerry Toliver soon to have "The Dead Zone" in Columbus, Ohio with Anthony Michael Hall making an appearnace at Columbus.
• Could a staple of the old days of Pro Modified be close to returning? A driver who prefers to remain nameless was approached with a proposal for funding to develop a nitrous engine program for his new '63 Corvette that is near completion. It is under serious consideration and may be a reality since the recent acquisition of a double car hauler. Two cars, one for cool weather, and the other for hot humid conditions. If this becomes reality, a "push" system would definitely be his direction of focus depending on the rulebook.
• We've just caught wind that Red River Raceway has been sold to Ken and Molly Hall, former owners of Hallsville Raceway in Hallsville, Texas. They are said to be taking possession in two weeks. The word on the streets is that their long history with the NHRA will lead them to make the switch. This is still in the rumor stage, so we'll have to see how it all plays out.
• How about this for liberal rules? During GM Performance Parts Top Stock competition, Joe Aluise defeated Danny Byrd in the second round but ended up running him in the next one. Apparently, the IHRA is very intent on keeping the class, which is in its final season on the tour. Reportedly in a meeting, the drivers were encouraged to do burnouts across the line and to stage a wheelie contest during eliminations for a special prize. As for the Aluise situation, a new rule does away with competition bye runs beyond the first round and brings back the quickest loser of the previous one. It just so happened the Byrd fit the bill and defeated Aluise on a holeshot the next go round. Byrd ended up winning the event.
• With the hoopla surrounding the recent rule changes, rumor has it that the IHRA has warmed up to the idea of allowing a turbo car or two to stage an exhibition run during an upcoming national event.
• Following the incident in Atlanta where a Super Stock car ran over the obstruction in the center, the NHRA reportedly will employ the use of a foam replacement.
• Two IHRA national events at Virginia Motorsports Park for 2005? That's what we've heard circulating over the course of the IHRA ACDelco Nationals. In judging the Saturday crowd, we might give a bit of credence that rumor. However, the Friday attendance was dismal at best. Could the IHRA consider changes to its program to improve the Friday attendance? Or, could they revamp in the future to do away with the importance of Friday? Time will tell on this one.
• One of the hottest rumors making its way around the pits in Chicago at the NHRA event, was the suggestion that there could be some major changes to the IHRA forthcoming as mandated by majority owner Clear Channel. This is a totally unsubstantiated rumor, but if it ends up having any merit, the ramifications could be large. Stay tuned as we investigate these claims and the hearsay that has ensued as a result. On Monday, we made a call to the IHRA's office and spoke with IHRA President Bill Bader regarding rumors of his dismissal and the suggestion that the IHRA might do away with open competition. Bader admitted the news of any friction between he and Clear Channel is pure hearsay as is the notion of the sanctioning body doing away with open competition and becoming a one-day booked in show tour. Look for an exclusive interview coming this week.
• Could the decision of the NHRA to deny participation from any individual in litigation have been used to deter a well-known nitro team owner from bringing a lawsuit against the sanctioning body over their handling of the fuel issue this year?
• Word has it that team owner Don Schumacher is building a new shop in Indy in close proximity to where Don Prudhomme and John Force built theirs. It is said to be large enough to house all existing teams as well as an additional Top Fuel team. Hmmmm....
• Our longtime buddy George Bryce is said to be very close to having a competitive Buell ready for NHRA and he is very encouraged with the results of testing. Now if Kawasaki can get their act together to become competitive, Pro Stock Bike will have the kind of real diversity it has needed for ages. By the way, we hope everybody took note of the full stands when the bikes were running. Before, as soon as Pro Stock car was done, the stands emptied. Even the Suzuki folks were noting that and were pleased that the diversity of competition was keeping the fans' interest. We, of course, keep hearing whining about leveling the playing field now that Harley-Davidson is doing well. Does that sound like NASCAR or what? Of course, Angelle's win took a little wind out of that argument.
• The NHRA has decided to allow supercharged Pro Modified racers to run at 25% overdrive in Chicago since there is an apparent shortage of 20% pulleys available. The decision is a tough one for a few supercharged teams, who have undergone extensive testing already on the new combination. Our question is this: will this shortage be alieviated by Virginia? If the problem exists, will the IHRA postpone their rule change?
• One of the worst kept secrets of drag racing has been the inclusion of many Ford-powered mountain motor Pro Stockers entering Fun Ford competition and the annual World Ford Challenge. We've caught wind that IHRA Sunoco Pro Stock racer John Montecalvo will be bringing two of his mountain motor Chevrolet Pro Stockers to the PRO event coming up later this month in Atco, NJ. The rumor mill has Jeff Dobbins driving a second team car at the same event. Is the Pro Street world ready for mountain motor Pro Stockers with mufflers?
• While rumors have been surrounding the Pro Stock community for an implementation of EFI in the near future, sources indicate that at least one of the three major manufacturers are very much interested in returning to a format similar to pounds versus cubic inch and limiting the cars to engine combinations currently coming out of Detroit. The question is, will turbos be in the proposed mix?
• Once the joke of the NHRA POWERade tour, word has it that Seattle Raceway's revamped racing surface may become one of the better if early bracket racing shows are any indication.
• QuarterMax Racing Pro Stock team (Rick Jones, Mark Stockseth and Butch White) are possibly looking into adding a second car team for the remainder of the 2004 season. The driving duties are rumored to be someone from NHRA Pro Stock.
• A series of meetings took place in the Pro Modified pits to discuss the recent rule changes by the IHRA in the class. A number of supercharged racers voiced their displeasure of the rule and began steps to organize in order to create a better dialogue between the racers and the sanctioning bodies regarding future rule changes.
• Here's something to ponder. Why has the NHRA only shown still photos when it comes to their video promotion of the upcoming 50th anniversary of the NHRA U.S. Nationals? Word has it there's some confusion over who owns the rights to the video footage - Diamond P or NHRA.
• The banter floating around the pits is that Terry Haddock has relieved tuner Paul Smith of his duties headed into Bristol. Smith will still tune for Jeff Arend.
• Reportedly, a meeting transpired in Rockingham between IHRA officials and Funny Car drivers. The topic of the meeting was the extensive oildowns on Friday. While the meeting was intended to encourage the teams to better police themselves, the underlying tone was to fix the problem or else.
Now that he’s away from that team, his brother says…you know Tony has been around team orders for a long time and there won’t be any of that here. If they didn’t have team orders, he wouldn’t have won the championship last year. - Whit Bazemore regarding his rivalry with Tony Pedregon
“Bader if you were running an airport, you’d have planes crisscrossing each other and landing all over one another.” - Scotty Cannon, after watching a set of cars do burnouts, only to be shut down when oil was discovered on the track, taking IHRA President Bill Bader to task over his procedure of running a pair of cars every 17 seconds. Cannon uttered with a flurry of hand gestures,
“My ancestors were concerned about me coming to Texas. There are way too many Cowboys.”-IHRA Speed color commentator and Native American Johnny Rocca on coming to San Antonio, Texas, for his debut as part of the television talent crew.
“These kids are a lot smarter now than we were back when we were doing it. There’s so much technology available to them. We had to work with what we had back then and it was the big motors. I would have loved to experiment with one of the little motors they have now.” - Carroll Shelby on today's Sport Compact revolution
“I went to church with John Aden and Ken Owen. I told Austin to set me on fire…shit that’s the fun stuff. – John Force after a brief fire opposite Ron Capps in the first round.
“Our airplanes were gassed and ready…we were watching the speeds on the Internet and I figured we ought to get the hell down there.” – Willie G. Davidson on whether or not he had an idea that the Harley-Davidson Pro Stock team team could win in Gainesville.
