(3-24-2004) - Can-Am Motorsports and Casavant Mining Company, a Canadian based diamond-mining group, have struck a deal for primary sponsorship of former Keystone Nationals Winner, Jeff Arend and the Can-Am Motorsports team. This will allow Arend to jump into this years NHRA POWERADE season early and actually get into the points chase. The CMKX-treme Machine Nitro Funny Car will debut at the Las Vegas NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals, on April 1 through 4 of 2004 and continue for the remaining 20 events. Can-Am Motorsports co-founder and pilot of the Nitro Funny Car, Jeff Arend, stated, “I’m beyond excited about getting in behind the wheel of a nitro funny car. I have a great support system behind me with Can-Am Motorsports and the CMKX-treme Machine. We will be entering the points chase 4 races in but we are looking for success in those last 20.” Can-Am Motorsports has additional sponsorship opportunities for
the 2004/2005 seasons, including the corporate sponsor for the Top
Fuel Dragster. “This is a terrific opportunity for a major
sponsor to achieve an unparalleled level of exposure through a racing
sponsorship”, stated Jeff Flasco, Vice President of Sales
and Marketing for Can-Am Motorsports. “The POWERADE Series
spans the country for its 23 nationally televised events. Each four-day
NHRA race weekend attracts approximately 125,000 affluent, educated
and very brand loyal spectators as well as local and national media.”
MSD IGNITION IS MANDATORY IN NHRA PRO STOCK COMPETITION(3-24-2004) - At the NHRA Gatornationals held March 19-21, the MSD Digital Programmable Ignition, PN 7530T became the mandatory ignition control for Pro Stock competition. This unit has also been approved by the NHRA Technical Department for use in applicable Sportsman and E.T. bracket categories. The PN 7530T has several features that racers have asked for, as well as features that technical directors of the sanctioning bodies requested. For racers, they can now plot a complete timing curve for every gear, ramp retard stages on and off, plus advance the timing momentarily between gear changes. Due to the growing discussions of illegal traction control systems, and the difficulties associated with policing such controls, MSD developed a technology called Traction Control Detection (TCD). This proprietary circuitry carefully monitors all of the ignition's signals and if the TCD determines that there has been any external modification to a signal, the ignition will be put into a low rpm rev limit mode and set a trouble code. This will assist the tech department officials in their inspections. There were no reported TCD events at the Gatornationals. Also, use of an illegal traction control device has never been confirmed in professional NHRA racing. This technology is also being incorporated to other MSD Ignition products. Send guns, lawyers, money and Mace to the Gators(3-23-2004) - The NHRA is investigating an incident that happened on Sunday at the NHRA Mac Tools Gatornationals in the Pro Stock Bike pits. Reportedly, Pro Stock racer Rickie Smith was maced by a member of Pro Stock Bike rider Shawn Gann's crew. According to sources close to the incident, Smith confronted Gann on the return road regarding an incident where Matt Smith's helmet was kicked. According to Smith, he was then maced despite his contention there was no weapon in his hand, nor did he raise his hand to strike anyone. Gann could not be reached for comment. Sources close to the situation said the NHRA has investigated and will soon pass on a ruling. Smith would not comment further saying that everything is in the hands of the lawyers and that this will end up in court. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

(3-23-2004) - When three-time International Hot Rod Association Top Fuel champion Clay Millican takes his Team Werner/Lehman Racing dragster to the track at San Antonio Raceway this coming weekend, he'll have a little local help. Associate sponsors for the IHRA Amalie Motor Oil Texas Nationals on March 26-28 will be nii communications, inc., a San Antonio telecom company, and DragRacingOnline.com, an Internet drag racing magazine.
The president and CEO of nii is Richard Burk, of Boerne. His brother, Jeff, is the publisher of DragRacingOnline.com. Both Burk brothers have been drag racing fans and participants since their high school days in Amarillo, Texas.
"DragRacingOnline.com covers racing at the speed of the Internet," said editor and publisher Jeff Burk, "so it's natural for us to be associated with the fastest car in the fastest class."
Last year at the inaugural Texas Nationals, Millican, from Drummonds, Tenn., set the IHRA Top Fuel record for elapsed time with a 4.591-second pass down the quarter-mile strip.
"The San Antonio track was really good to us last year," said Millican, "and I hope the Werner team can go out there and set another World Record and give all the fans a great show this year as well."
Richard Burk is sure the weekend will be an eye-opener for some of his staff and people who have never see a drag race in person.
"The newcomers are going to be blown away by the noise, the smell of the nitromethane fuel, and the physical experience of engines that produce 6,000 horsepower," he said. "The on-track action is exciting and every fan can be in the pit area to see the cars up close and watch as the teams prepare for competition.
"We think drag racing is a great way to showcase the rapid
growth of nii communications and the services that it provides.
Clay Millican and his team owner Peter Lehman are great people.
Plus," Burk added, "it's just a lot of fun."

(3-21-2004) - Andrew Hines rode a Harley-Davidson into the history books Sunday, earning the factory's first win in NHRA history during the Pro Stock Bike final at the 35th annual Mac Tools NHRA Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway.
Tony Schumacher, Del Worsham and Greg Anderson earned the wins in their respective categories at the $2 million race, the third of 23 events in the $50 million NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.

(3-21-2004) - Al Billes doesn’t mind shying away from all the fanfare and hoopla that sometimes permeates the Pro Modified community. On a day at the 35th annual MAC Tools NHRA Gatornationals when upsets reigned supreme, Billes, the seventh quickest in an eight-car field, looked anything but an underdog. The Barrie, Ont.-based engineer drove his 1953 Corvette to the first AMS Pro Modified Challenge event victory of the season. It was also his first one as well.
Billes took out the #2, #3 and #4 and four ranked drivers in that order to seal the victory. When Ed Hoover blew the tires off at the hit, it marked the third driver to do so against Billes.

| Cody McManama escaped uninjured, but the car and its brand new 737-inch “Musi Mutilator” powerplant were left a lot worse for wear. |
(3-20-2004) - Most racers are aware of the syndrome known as “new car blues,” but for 21-year-old Cody McManama, the situation went from the sublime to the ridiculous in one fell swoop during a Friday night test session at No Problem Raceway Park.
McManama, of Wallingford, Connecticut, who has a background in Pro Outlaw and Pro Modified competition, had a new 1999 Pro Street Monte Carlo in Belle Rose, Louisiana for the Corteco Gaskets NSCA Drag Racing Series presented by BFGoodrich season opener. On Friday evening he took the car out for its first shakedown pass, but unfortunately things went very bad just a short way into the run.
As Cory shifted into second gear, the second stage of nitrous came in at the exact same time, throwing the car out of control and into the wall. Fire erupted shortly thereafter, and the track rescue personnel had to act fast to extinguish the flames and get the driver to safety.
McManama escaped uninjured, but the car and its brand new 737-inch “Musi Mutilator” powerplant were left a lot worse for wear. There was guarded speculation that the car could be repaired, but Cody will unfortunately be sidelined for a few NSCA events this season.

(3-18-2004) - What happens when you combine 5 of the most graphically appealing Pro Modified entries, the Gainesville Ale House, scores of hungry and passionate race fans, John Force, a hot body contest and a classic Shelby GT500E from Unique Performance? Well if you’re Kenny Nowling at Nowling Motorsports Management, you score a promotional home run.
It was just two years ago that Nowling orchestrated a kickoff party of the same magnitude that ushered in the AMS Pro Modified Challenge. The maestro was up to his same antics as emcee Bret Kepner brought a standing room-only crowd to a frenzy that should bring in a few more fans of the Pro Modified class, and of course, encourage ticket sales for the event this weekend in Gainesville.
Force, long known for his admiration of the class, stepped to center stage and proclaimed the NHRA’s exhibition division to be one that has always caught his eye. He gave credit to the teams for their creativity in themes by saying, “You gotta love these guys they put on the side of the car what they want to put.”

That led to recognition of Mark Brown and Illusions Paint & Body for having painted four of five cars on display.
The five cars on display were Mike Ashley’s Unique Performance-sponsored 1967 Shelby GT500, Danny Rowe’s InfiNet-sponsored 1963 Corvette, Zach Barkledge’s supercharged Grand-Am, Von Smith in Tommy Lipar’s supercharged Mustang and the flagship for AMS Staff Leasing driven by Troy Critchley.

Then there was the hot bod contest which was won by a college student named Erin. Of course, that stole the show for most of the partygoers of the male persuasion (and a few of the females)…except for the one Goodyear tire store employee who dropped in to see the cars.
Looking at the 001 limited edition “Eleanor” replica Shelby GT500E from Unique Performance, he rubbed his head and uttered, “Man, I’d give my firstborn child to drive this thing.”

(3-18-2004) – In two weeks, racers throughout the country will head to their local dragstrip with one thing in mind: to become the 2004 Summit SuperSeries World Champion.
The program, which rewards sportsman racers competing at IHRA-sanctioned tracks in the U.S., Canada and for the first year, Aruba, enters its third year and will again crown a Box world champion and a No Box world champion. Drivers participate at their home track, and their final score for the season is compared on a divisional, or regional, level, and ultimately on a national level, to crown the two world champions. Up for grabs for each world champion is over $100,000 in cash and prizes.
"What makes this amazing program work is the fact that racers can compete at their local track, within 20 miles from home, and still chase an IHRA World Championship," said IHRA Director of Track Services Tom Kreager. "And the payouts go well beyond the two $100,000 prize packages for the two world champions. Racers are paid for their divisional accomplishments and accomplishments at their home track.
"Last season IHRA and Summit Racing Equipment paid over 500 racers."
How it Works
Participants race at their home track within the Box or No Box category. The racers first 40 rounds of competition are factored in to a score called a Performance Rating (PR), which is simply the number of rounds won, divided by 40. In other words, the PR is like a batting average, based on a fixed amount of ‘at bats’. Each round of competition is like an ‘at-bat’ (except there are no walks). Win the round and your PR increases, lose and it goes down.
The points are tabulated by IHRA after every weekend and the drivers are compared at their home track within their declared class. The best driver from each track advances to the divisional level and is compared with the best drivers within their division. The best driver from each of the five divisions advances to the national level and is compared with the best drivers in the entire program. The best of the best is world champion. At the end of the season, IHRA and Summit Racing Equipment pay: the top five at each track in Box and No Box; the top five in each division in Box and No Box; and the two national finalists in Box and No Box.
Qualifying participants win cash and prizes (see, "Show me the money!", below). Of those receiving payouts, from the world champion to the top five on the track level, Summit Racing Equipment will automatically double any driver’s cash winnings if he/she qualifies for the Summit Bonus. To be eligible, the driver must purchase $1,000 from Summit Racing Equipment between December 1, 2003 and July 1, 2004.
"Show me the money!"
As mentioned, cash and prizes are awarded through the program.
The two World Champions win $25,000 ($50,000 if the driver meets the Summit Bonus), a world championship diamond ring, and an IHRA Iron Man.
Plus, the Box world champion receives a turnkey Worthy/Sunset Quick Rod dragster, courtesy of Worthy Race Cars and Sunset RaceCraft Racing Engines, 2 Pit Pro pit bikes and the Aruba Aloe trip for two. The No Box world champion receives a 2005 Pontiac G6, a complete Huntsville Engine & Performance 540 Big Block Chevy Racing Engine (as seen in the current Summit catalog), and the Aruba Aloe trip for two.
Top five finishers in Box and No Box from each division receive $2,500, $1,000, $750, $500, $250, respectively. Top five finishers in Box and No Box at each track receive $250, $125, $65, $40, $25, respectively. All payouts are automatically doubled for any competitor meeting the Summit Bonus.
In addition to cash and prizes, the two world champions are honored at the IHRA Awards Banquet, along with IHRA’s professional and sportsman world champions. Divisional and local winnings will be paid at the driver’s home track banquet.

(3-17-2004) – Excitement abounds for the Duck/Loctite Racing Team as the start of their 2004 Hooters IHRA Racing Series tour draws near. Among the things generating excitement are new associate sponsors, new rides, road trips, and display opportunities. The associate sponsors are not strangers to the team, as each product was on board Terry Knott’s championship-winning ’73 Dart Sport last season. The team expresses its heartfelt thanks to K&N Filters, Mickey Thompson Tires, Auto Meter.
Each car and tow vehicle on the team will be outfitted with K&N Filters. In addition to the replacement elements for stock air filters, K&N’s line of complete air intake kits provide an easy bolt-on increase of airflow and horsepower. The installation is quick and simple. Team manager Matt Zapp has already installed the systems on the Chevrolet Duramax dually, and on the ’00 Dakota. The installations took between 10-20 minutes to complete, but the performance increase was instantaneous! Don’t forget that K&N also makes oil filters; just another great way to protect your racing investment.
Mickey Thompson Tires have been on board for over 100 eliminator wins for the team. They provide the ultimate in hook, consistency, and longevity – everything you need in a race tire. “I like the fact that you can run a lot of air in the Mickeys,” said teammate Michael Beard. “Terry’s Dart Sport has recorded 1.46 sixty-foot times with 20 psi in a 9x28” bias-ply tire. That’s a stock-chassied car, and that’s just incredible. I can’t wait to outfit Adger Smith’s Super Stock Camaro with Mickey Thompsons!”
Auto Meter has been a great supporter, and a partner in our learning process as well. Auto Meter’s Mike Tritle has taught the team that there’s no such thing as too much data. With the level of competition today, it is the teams who cover the smallest details that will find the winning edge. “I always thought my Auto Meter Monster Tach was great,” explained Beard. “When I first drove the Stocker with the Auto Meter Ultimate Playback, I was hooked. You can learn a great deal about not only the car, but your driving habits as well. This year, we are upgrading to the Ultimate Playback II, to find out what else we have been missing!”
The defending IHRA Stock World Championship Dart Sport is currently on display at the Summit Retail Store in Tallmadge, Ohio. Stop by the store to see the car in the next two weeks, and take special note of the contingency decals. These are the components that turn on the win light! Most of the products are available right at Summit Racing Equipment.
Beard will be the first Duck brand duct tape/Loctite Racing team
member to have the opportunity to break free from Ohio’s icy
grip. “This Duck’s flying south!” said Beard.
“Lord willing, we should be testing the Super Stocker at Shreveport
this weekend. The following week, we head for San Antonio for the
IHRA Amalie Oil Texas Nationals, where I get to shoe not only the
Camaro, but thanks to my good friend Tim Lee, I will have a Stocker
to drive too! We are doubly blessed to have been so fortunate in
the last year, but also to have the incredible friends and partners
that we do. We appreciate them all, very sincerely!”

(3-17-2004) – Even a best-selling author
could not have scripted a more perfect race day than the one that
played out this past weekend for Lisa Kubo and the Saturn Motorsports
Team at the opening event of the NHRA Summit Sport Compact Drag
Racing Series in Fontana, California.
Kubo delivered a blazing performance with her APC/Saturn Motorsports/Valvoline
ION, tuned by husband, Gary Kubo, that included #1 qualifier, new
national e.t. record, a win and the PRO FWD points lead. “We
literally picked up right where we left off last year”, exclaimed
Jim Epler, Saturn Motorsports Director. “At the last NHRA
race in 2003, we qualified #1, reset the national e.t. record and
won the race, so the momentum from last year definitely carried
over. But even better, we leave this race with a 41-point lead and
that’s a huge advantage that will no doubt be a critical factor
in the championship.”
Kubo and crew kicked off the start of the Nitto Tires NHRA Sport
Compact Nationals presented by Import Tuner, qualifying #1 on Saturday
with a blistering 8.028 elapsed time at 186.12 mph, the quickest
run in PRO FWD history. That stellar run edged the team closer to
the coveted 7-second barrier, a life-time achievement that has become
the goal of every team out there and for Saturn Motorsports and
their sponsors, APC and Valvoline, is almost as important as winning
a championship. “We want to be the ones to break the 7-second
barrier” stated Lisa Kubo. “We’re closer to it
now than anyone else so the pressure to get there first is intense.”
While the team will have to wait for the next race to take another
shot at the 7’s, they still became the top story on race day
Sunday. In the first round of eliminations, Kubo defeated JoJo Callos,
running an 8.390 at 142.06 mph to JoJo’s 9.273 at 145.28 mph.
Between the first and final rounds, an extensive clean-up in the
left lane caused a major delay which Gary Kubo and crew put to good
use, spending 30 minutes studying the tricky track in anticipation
of their final round against 2003 PRO FWD Champ, Nelson Hoyos, who
had lane choice. The crew’s detailed evaluation of the track
provided the data they needed for a winning tune-up when Kubo clocked
an 8.055 elapsed time at 180.79 mph over Hoyos’ 8.397 at 180.48
mph in the final round. Not only did Kubo and crew take home the
trophy, their 8.05 was within the required 1% to back-up the 8.02
for the new NHRA national elapsed time record. Kubo also proved
to be the fan favorite as a record crowd in attendance chanted Lisa’s
name during the final and turned out in great numbers to congratulate
her in the winner’s circle.
As the Saturn Motorsports Team begins their quest for a 2004 championship,
Jim Epler also expressed gratitude on behalf of the crew. “We
want to thank our sponsors, APC, Valvoline, Matco Tools and all
the great Authorized Saturn Motorsports Dealers across the country
who support us. We know the best way to say thanks is through performance,
so this win’s for you.”
The team returns to San Diego to savor their victory and prepare
for the next event April 17th and 18th, the 2nd Annual BF Goodrich
Tires NHRA Sport Compact Nationals at Moroso Motorsports Park in
Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

(3-16-2004) - The drivers that remained at Virginia
Motorsports Park for the final day of the 4th annual Competitionplus.com
Spring Open presented by Torco Race Fuels were rewarded with great
weather that led to some of the quickest runs of the event.
Pro Stock driver John Bartunek was one of the most productive drivers of the day, recording consecutive runs of 6.48, 6.49 and 6.49. This was the first time that Bartunek has ever run quicker than 6.50-seconds.
Jim Sickles, who was declared winner of the Funny Car Chicago-style
elimination round because he had the lowest ET during qualifying,
had a 5.67-second run at 253.14 miles per hour, while Ray Commisso
took his Pro Mod car down the drag strip in 6.40 seconds at 221.30
miles per hour.
(3-15-2004)– George Ioannou took home the "Wally" trophy in Pro RWD at the Nitto NHRA California Sport Compact Nationals presented by Import Tuner, completing an exciting weekend of drag racing at the first NHRA-sanctioned event ever held at California Dragway.
Lisa Kubo, Carlos Gonzalez Jr., Scott Kelley and Mike Crawford also were winners at the first of 10 events in the $2.1 million NHRA Summit Sport Compact Series.
Ioannou, of the New Jersey-based Bullish Racing Team, powered his StreetGlow Toyota Solara to a single-pass victory over teammate Ara Arslanian in the final-round for his eighth career win. Arslanian, also the team owner for the two-car team, failed to make a pass in the final due to engine trouble suffered in the semifinals.
"This was a pretty good start for the StreetGlow cars," Ioannou said. "We were using this race as a good test session and thing worked out well. We know that there is a long season ahead of us and this was a good way to get things going heading into Moroso."
Kubo, from Chino Hills, Calif., who recorded the quickest run in Pro FWD history during qualifying on Saturday (8.028 seconds), backed-up the record performance with a winning final round run of 8.055 at 180.79 in her APC Saturn Ion Quad Coupe. The victory over defending category champ Nelson Hoyos was Kubo’s fifth career win and second in a row dating back to the finals in Pomona in 2003.
"We won the race and were able to back-up the record so we are very happy," Kubo said. "This is a great win. Any time you can win the first race of the season is always the best. It gives you a jump start to keep the momentum going throughout the season."
Crawford, from Eden, N.C., collected his second career win in Turbo Magazine Hot Rod, with an uncontested final round run in his Mopar Dodge SRT-4.
"The fastest car doesn’t always win the race," Crawford said. "We don’t need to necessarily set records to win races. You can’t take anyone in the field for granted, so we’ll look at our turbo to gear ratio and make some corrections to better ourselves for the next race."
Rookie Carlos Gonzalez Jr., from Ocala, Fla., picked up his first career victory in Modified, when final round opponent Paul Efantis fouled at the start in his Lucas Oil Toyota Solara. Gonzalez’s Mazda RX3 got out of shape at the start and he had to lift early, but the victory was already his.
"Being a rookie and winning my first career race in the same car that my dad won his first career race is pretty special," said Gonzalez Jr. "That was a wild ride in the final. We knew Paul’s car was making more power, so we tuned up our car and went for it. When I left the line the car was going toward the wall, so I had to lift, but then I saw the win light come on in my lane. I couldn’t believe he turned on the red light. I’m just happy to get my first Wally (trophy)."
Kelly, from Anaheim Hills, Calif., earned his fourth career victory by defeating Cloyse Holland III in the Honda Tuning All Motor final. Kelley clocked a run of 10.621 at 125.02 in his Toyo Tires 1969 VW Fastback, while Holland posted a 10.762 at 123.10 in his Honda Civic in the runner-up effort.
The next NHRA Summit Sport Compact Series event is the second annual BFGoodrich Tires NHRA Sport Compact Nationals, April 17-18 at Moroso Motorsports Park in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
Professional category results from Sunday's final eliminations for the Nitto California NHRA Sport Compact Nationals presented by Import Tuner at California Dragway. The race is the first of 10 events in the 2004 NHRA Summit Sport Compact Series.

(3-14-2004) - Following the successful completion of the IHRA’s official spring warm-up event, the 4th annual CompetitionPlus.com Spring Open, presenting sponsor Torco Race Fuels generously sweetened the pot for the drivers who posted the lowest elapsed times in both the Pro Modified and Pro Street categories.
Following two days of testing and time trials, Pro Street legend Pat Musi, of Carteret, New Jersey, took the $500.00 Pro Street purse, while Steve Salvadore, of Barre, Massachusetts, took the same amount to cap off a career-best performance behind the wheel of his supercharged ’57 Chevy.
To make it to the Chicago-style Pro Mod final, Salvadore ran through the clocks with a mark of 6.164 at 232.43 miles per hour, while his opponent, Kasey Janzen, of Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, also paced his blown ’63 Corvette to a personal best, covering the quarter-mile in 6.195-seconds at 227.04 MPH.
In the final, Salvadore overcame a holeshot and took the win going away, 6.294, 212.03 to Janzen’s 6.496, 223.28.
During Saturday’s preliminary sessions, air and track conditions allowed the two-car team of Musi and Tony Christian to qualify for the Pro Street final, with passes of 6.593 and 6.658 respectively. Once darkness fell, however, rapidly falling temperatures prompted the decision to declare Musi the winner, and he was also presented with a $500.00 check from Torco.
Torco Race Fuels President Evan Knoll stated prior to the event that the company was proud to offer the special bonus to the highly popular styles of doorslammer racing.
"I think the Pro Modified and Pro Street classes go hand in hand," explained Knoll. "I am very proud to offer this bonus to these classes that do a lot of business with us. The more we get involved with this event, the happier we get."

(3-13-2004) - The action continued here in the Fourth Annual Competitionplus.com Spring Open presented by Torco Racing Fuels at Virginia Motorsports Park with another full day of testing and time trials accompanied by Chicago-style eliminations in the Pro Stock, Pro Modified, Pro Street and Funny Car divisions. At the end of the day, the winners were John Montecalvo in Pro Stock, Steve Salvadore in Pro Modified and Pat Musi in Pro Street. The Funny Car final will be run tomorrow.
Montecalvo, from Center Moriches, N.Y., got the win in the Pro Stock division after he beat Rick Jones in the final round of eliminations. Montecalvo earned his spot in the finals by record the low ET of 6.503 seconds during the first two rounds of qualifying today and Jones was second quickest with an ET of 6.513 seconds.
![]() |
In the final round, Jones had the better start with a 0.052-second light against Montecalvo's 0.098 second start. But Jones' car started to shake the tires and he had to back off the throttle. Meanwhile in the right lane, Montecalvo had a strong run from start to finish and ended up with a 6.495 second elapsed time at 215.34 miles per hour for his quickest and fastest run of the weekend.
In the Pro Modified division, the two low qualifiers were Steve Salvadore, from Borre, Mass. and Kasey Janzen, from Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. Salvadore covered the quarter mile in 6.164 seconds at 232.43 miles per hour while Janzen had an ET of 6.195 seconds at 227.04 MPH.
![]() |
When they faced off against each other in the elimination round, Janzen cut a 0.073 second light for the early lead. But by the time they reached the 60-foot mark on the track, Salvadore had already passed him and began to pull away for the win. Salvadore finished with a 6.294 second ET at 212.03 miles per hour and Janzen had a 6.496 second elapsed time and speed of 223.28 miles per hour.
After both air and track temperatures dropped, Pat Musi was declared the winner of the Pro Street division, based on his low ET of 6.593 seconds compared to runner-up Tony Christian's second quickest ET of 6.658 seconds.
Rather than declare a winner based on qualifying ETs, Funny Car finalists Jim Sickles and Mick Snyder decided to run their elimination race tomorrow afternoon. Sickles had the quickest run of the day at 5.699 seconds at 252.61 miles per hour and Snyder was just a but slower at 5.701 seconds at 249.72 miles per hour.
Torco Racing Fuels awarded a $500 prize to both Salvadore and Musi for having the lowest elapsed times in their divisions. Dragracinggirls.com also awarded a $500 prize to Salvadore for winning "Chicago Style" eliminations in the Pro Modified division.

(3-12-2004) – On his last run of the day, Frank Gugliotta of Mt. Airy, Md., made unofficial Pro Stock history. The hired gun for Steve Thodos put the team’s brand new Ford Escort into uncharted territory with a 6.407, 215.51. The atmospheric conditions were incredible as the air was at 275-below sea level.
A stunned Gugliotta was at a loss for words as he was handed the time slip for confirmation.
“How can you put this into words,” added Gugliotta, voted the most improved driver in IHRA.
“When I stuck this car into third and went high, I know this thing was on a pass” Gugliotta smiled as he kissed his brand new Rick Jones-built Escort. “That old Jon Kaase horsepower threw me back in the seat and those Hoosier Tires just held on to the track.”
Thodos was confident that his team can repeat in tomorrow’s “Chicago Style” eliminations.
“It feels absolutely great and I’m happy for Frank and my guys,” added Thodos. “It’s times like this that confirmed that I made the best choice for the driver.”
Just two years ago, former IHRA Pro Stock World Champion Gene Wilson ran a 6.51.

(3-11-2004) - David Johnson, 32, passed away shortly after 1:30 a.m., Thursday, March 11, 2004, after a long battle with cancer.
Born in Virginia, Dave was involved with racing his entire life. He worked as a crewmember for "Big Daddy" Don Garlits and Gene Snow, both former IHRA world champions. From there he began work in the field of track management. First at East Side Speedway in Waynesboro, Va., and then national event facilities Virginia Motorsports Park and Darlington International Dragway, where he earned the name "Darlington Dave." He later became co-owner and general manager of Red River Raceway, home of the IHRA Mopar Parts World Finals.
Cancer was detected in his back and spine. Dave underwent treatment and the cancer went into remission.
"Dave was part of the team that helped us launch IHRA in 1998," said IHRA President Bill Bader. "His full-time responsibility was to serve as general manager of Darlington Dragway; his full-time commitment was to help me rebuild confidence and attitude in IHRA. He worked at events, helped with track prep, announced, sold tickets, whatever it took, whenever we needed him. He was always there. It is sad and unfortunate our industry has to suffer this loss."
Dave had most recently taken a job as general manager at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park, in Martin, Mich. He was in the process of relocating when cancer reappeared.
Dave is survived by his wife of seven years Mitzi.
The entire IHRA family sends our deepest prayers to his friends and family.

(3-10-2004) – The International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) and Clear Channel Entertainment – Motor Sports announced today that an all new broadcast team will handle play by play, color and pit reporting for the 2004 Hooters IHRA Drag Racing series on SPEED Channel. IHRA veteran announcer Ken Stout will continue as play by play, newcomer Johnny Rocca will handle the color and current USHRA Monster Jam Superstar and former WWF and WCW Champion, Madusa will report on the pit and lifestyle action.
The Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series will again be produced by Anita Hallman and HallBrook Productions.
Returning from the 2003 broadcast team, Ken Stout has been announcing motor sports events, including coverage of USHRA Monster Truck events, drag racing, off-road racing and boat racing for over ten years. This year, Stout will also work as pit reporter for the ASA and Champion Off Road Racing Series (CORR), as host of the CORR Sportsman Series and the IHBA Drag Boat Series, all on SPEED Channel. He has also been a regular contributor to ESPN’s "Speedworld".
"Its great to be back for a second year with IHRA," said Stout. "With HallBrook returning as the production company in 2004, it will make us a well-oiled machine from the first event. Just like a race team, you create relationships and build experience by bringing the same team back year after year. I feel like we laid the groundwork last season and the nucleus of the show has been established.
"I look forward to working with Monster Jam Superstar Madusa and Johnny Rocca, a seasoned Pro Modified driver. I feel like we will continue to raise the bar."
Former Pro Modified racer Johnny Rocca will serve as color commentator on the IHRA broadcasts. Rocca, a successful business owner from the Washington, D.C. area, has been involved with drag racing for over 40 years and is considered one of the most colorful figures in the sport.
"I am really excited about being part of the team," said Rocca. "I think I can bring ‘behind the scenes knowledge’ to the program with my extended background in the sport. I know most of the IHRA team and racers and this will give me the opportunity to stay involved in drag racing but from a different vantage point. I know what it’s like to be in the racecar, and when something happens on the track, I can tell the audience what is really happening. If a car or driver reacts a certain way, I know why he’s doing that. I intend to bring this insight to the fans.
"I think it’s a marvelous opportunity for me; I guess there is life after racing after all."
Monster Jam Superstar Madusa will be the pit reporter for the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series.
An international sports star most recently of Monster Truck fame, Madusa began her career in professional wresting and is a multiple-time world champion in both the World Wrestling Federation and World Championship Wrestling. She has been driving monster trucks since 1999 and competes on the USHRA Monster Jam circuit.
"I’m looking forward to presenting the IHRA show in a new light," said Madusa. "Fans can expect to see something new and rejuvenating, fun and off the wall. I am an adrenaline junky and my enthusiasm tends to rub off on others. It should help bring out a lot of the personality from the drivers and hopefully bring the event to life on television".
Reflecting on the team, IHRA President Bill Bader commented, "SPEED Channel is the fastest-growing sports cable network and the only 24-hour cable network devoted exclusively to motor sports and the human fascination with speed. The network’s commitment is testimony to our six years of growth and the commitment Hooters has made as our series sponsor."

(3-10-2004) - With the extremely persistent efforts of the American Iron Shootout founder Tony Guevara, this race is fast becoming what could be the Orlando World Street Nationals of the Northeast. Running his show out of Cecil County Dragway again, the third session of the series will be one not to miss. Tony has generated enormous amounts of interest from racers north and south to meet half way in Maryland and put the heat to the track. Providing everyone a class they can run in was his main concern and it’s been established now that there is something for everyone to enjoy a day at the races. The American Iron Shootout has had the privilege to being able to provide a race with a cause from it’s beginnings, The first of which was the Make A Wish Foundation, lasts years was the Ed Block Foundation that provides help for abused and at risk children, This years saga of Tony’s Shootout generosity will be a memorial to fallen friend and racer Jacob “Jake” Brown whose life was cut short by a drunk driver on New Years Eve 2003. Tony’s creative management has brought back goDragRacing.com as a sponsor for this and last year's Quick 8, and Outlaw 10.5 classes.
Anytime you look at what you are going to expect to see in upcoming
races during the season, none stands out more than the American
Iron Shootout III at Cecil County Dragway April 24th, and its cause;
Jacob “Jake” Brown whose life was cut short on New Years
Eve of 2003 by a drunk driver. Proceeds from this event will go

across the east coast. Tony "TAZ" Guevara’s race
didn’t happen overnight as most don’t, but even in its
infancy the buzz had been created and the turnouts were impressive
to say the least. Tony’s intentions were clear from the beginning,
to build a race that had something for everyone and this year is
complete and full of great new classes to have at it with the racer
in the next lane.
The enormous horsepower of the outrageous Quick 8 and Outlaw 10.5

(3-7-2004) – Charles Carpenter started the 2004 season the best way possible, by winning the season-opening Quick 8 race at Carolina Dragway.
“This is just a phenomenal way to start the year,” Carpenter exclaimed from victory lane. “We did so much work in the off-season that I knew this had the makings of being my ‘dream season.’ Winning the first time out just confirms that this is going to be one amazing year.
“Standing here in victory lane wouldn’t be possible without the help of so many people,” stated Carpenter. “I’ve got to thank Embee Performance for doing so much work on my behalf these past few months. They have given me a lot of parts with their coatings, and so far they are working better than expected. I’ve also got to thank Pat Doherty, as well as Buddy’s Automotive, Custom AutoSound and Country Motors Trailer Sales. And if it wasn’t for my crew – Ken and Michael – and their hard work we never could have made as many rounds as we had.”
Carpenter faced Buzz Varner in the final. He won by posting a 4.131 elapsed time over the 1/8-mile drag strip at 176.65 mph.
The weekend didn’t start as smoothly for Carpenter and the “World’s Fastest ’55 Chevrolet.” On Saturday he was the first Pro Modified to make a qualifying run. He leaned on the car and put down a solid run, but track officials neglected to turn on the timing system prior to his run so it was negated. Officials did allow Carpenter to make a rerun later in the afternoon, and he eventually qualified third for eliminations.
Making this victory even sweeter for Carpenter was having his son, Michael, as part of his pit crew. “Michael was with me once when I won a race, but he was so young he wouldn’t remember,” Carpenter claimed. “I guess that this makes it sort of like our first win together.”
The 2004 season marks Carpenter’s 30th year in drag racing, all behind the wheel of his famous 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air. Carpenter’s next race will be another Quick 8 event, on Saturday March 13 at Coastal Plains Raceway Park in Jacksonville, N.C. He will then set his sites on the March 26-28 IHRA Amalie Oil Texas Nationals in San Antonio, Texas.
