WHO’S HOT & WHO’S HOTTER

By Cheryl Boone

Hey there race fans. The racing season has come to a close. I really love drag racing and miss it during the off season. If you had told me some years ago that I would be a big drag racing fan I would have thought you weren't hitting on all eight cylinders. But I got hooked in 1989 when I went to the Gatornationals in Gainesville , Florida . Like I said, it was 1989 and I was one of those prissy girls, with big hair, fake nails and thick shoulder pads, hey come on it was still the 80's.

So anyway, I went kicking and screaming all the way to Gainesville , I had seen this stuff on television and really didn't know what the big deal was. When that first Top Fuel car fired up and did its burn out, I was hooked like a largemouth bass. Then the icing on the cake was when Darrell Gwynn waved to me in the stands while he backed up to the starting line. Ok, Ok, so he was probably waving to everyone there that day, but I took it personally. I guess drag racing does that to everyone. So now it is a few years later, I'm an even bigger fan now than I was then, but my hair is not so big, shoulder pads are way out of style and my nails are the real thing.

So enough about me, I want to tell you about a couple of hotties that can be found at the race track. Let's start with Donna Wagoner. She is a 5 foot 7 inch red-headed hottie that works her heart out for Vandergriff Motorsports, selling souvenirs. Oh sure, I know what you're thinking….. how hard can it be to sell T-shirts. Let me tell you, this gal is an army of one. She does not work your typical 9 – 5 job. Most of her days at the track are between 12 to18 hours long. After each race she hooks the trailer to a Ford F350 diesel dually by herself, then she drives to the next race track alone and unhooks the trailer and sets it up alone.

On occasion someone may fly in to help her with sales and then they are gone just in time for her to do a little inventory and hook up the trailer and drive to the next race. She zig-zags the country from state to state but the only bad part for her are the rain delays. She says those really hurt. But Donna says she wouldn't have it any other way, she loves what she does and wouldn't want a 9 to 5 job.

She has made a lot of friends at the tracks over the last 3 years. She says that most of the vendors are like a big family; they socialize and look out for each other. This year she was hurt in Columbus and everyone pitched in to help her out. She sells a lot of Mopar memorabilia and has gotten to know the people on the teams quite well. Donna feels that the Mopar Pro Stock team members are about the nicest people you could ever meet. Unfortunately, she rarely gets to see the races, but Pro Stock gets her blood boiling. She likes how competitive they are and that the races are only separated by 1000's of a second. Donna loves every part of racing; she just never wants to do it herself because she doesn't like to go over 90 mph.

Sometimes guys will buy two or three shirts from her and think that they will get a date with her, but all they get are two or three shirts. But Donna does believe that true love can be found at the race track. She says that men are always surprised to learn what she does for a living and that she drives a truck and trailer across the country.

When she can she likes to get to the track a day early so she can check into her hotel room and lay by the pool or go shopping and have a little time for herself. That's not always easy to do. Venders are just about as busy as the race teams. It takes an entire day to set up the trailer and prepare for the event, then another day after the event to inventory and pack everything away to get back on the road.

Her dream man is over six feet tall, and a football player-type. A man's personality means more to her than his looks do. She also feels that her partner should be her best friend. She enjoys holding hands and a cuddle.

She likes a variety of music from Rock to Country, her favorite movies are science fiction, comedies and romance. Sex in the City is her favorite television show.

What turns her off? A size triple X woman squeezed into size 10 hip huggers and an extra small halter-top. Or an extremely large male (fat) that takes his shirt off in public. I gotta tell you Donna, none of us like that. Donna feels that people like that should be arrested. Come on down to south Florida , because in Palm Beach they will arrest you for being shirtless, male or female.

I have met a lot of people on the drag racing tour and she is one of the nicest. You owe it to yourself to stop by and say hello to her, oh yea, and buy a shirt or two.

I have to tell you about a young guy that I expect to see around the track for a long time, because he loves racing and has discovered that he might be able to make a living out of it. He is 23-year-old Josh Hamming from Ft. Wayne , Indiana . You know there is just something about those Indiana boys - I married one.

He is six feet tall and weighs 210. He works out a couple times a week, pressing 240 pounds. Josh is a shy, hard working and thoughtful guy that is focused on his goals. He enjoys working on fuel cars and looks forward to winning his first race with a team. He hopes to one day be a part of a championship team but he knows he is new to drag racing (only his first year on a fuel car) and it will take time and experience. He is currently working on Jack Wyatt's team, doing the cylinder heads and bottom end work.

When he is in Muncie , Indiana , he races his own 1996 Camaro Z28. He has one sister and a lot of support from his family. In his spare time he likes to hang out with friends and watch sports. At the track he can sometimes be found in the Worsham pit area where he has made many friendships. He says the only thing he doesn't do with them is go golfing; that's just not his thing.

He likes rock music and action movies. He is a non-smoker and would like to meet a girl that likes racing so they will have something in common.

Well, that is all for now. I'll see you at the races. Remember, you may not see me, but I will be looking for you.
